Capital: Kersir

Government and Ideology:

Composed of 25 clans, Kabon is ruled by the six leaders of the Great Clans which are then assisted by the 19 other leaders. Just as daily life is regulated by the Jewos, so is the country governed in accordance with the Dhedhmos (a book of laws set down by Chief Kwon Mlsos and updated by High Chief Retoni). Lawyers, teachers, scholars and artists are exempted from most taxes.

Society:

Kabona society is founded on a strict code of conduct called the Jewos in which honour is the central pillar. Men and women are equal under Kabona law, but expectations differ (women are expected to give birth to and raise children, men are expected to serve in the army or in major building projects,...) though these expectations are observed more due to the honour involved than any law. Raising children or fighting in the army results in more respect from the other members of the community, whereas failure to do so will result in less (though other ways can be found to gain honour, albeit more difficult to do so). In the day to day life of a Kabona citizen, tradition and honour play bigger roles than laws do. Thus, a person who errs greatly is likely to attempt sewechenmi (suicide) even though suicide is punishable by a hefty fine. This discrepancy results from recent creation of laws to replace the somewhat outdated customs that originated in the days when the Kabona people had been nomadic. Many aspects of Kabona life remain ritual, extremely symbolic and regulated by a long list of customs even though most of the population now worships the Kabona pantheon (instead of the more animistic worship in the earlier days); the connection between these two statements lies in the now, almost, obsolete belief that the spirits require extensive rituals in most aspects of one's life. So, although few people still believe in the supremacy of spirits, most of these rituals remain.

History:

The first mention of a unification of the Kabona people is in the Nagi Koniv by Susi, dating from 1200 B.C. Later chronicles tell of a later civil war and subsequent disintegration of the kingdom that had ruled for a few centuries. For about 1000 years, the various tribes form and break alliances to counter the threats from outside and the rare war between Kabona tribes. In A.D. 245, Bhilis the strong unites the northern tribes and forms them into clans based on skills of the people rather than former ties. By breaking the tribal lines, he prevents rival factions from forming along those boundaries. Assimilation of the tribes to the south is hampered by the unification of most of the southern tribes by the cousin of Bhilis who claims the crown of Kabona which had not been claimed for over 1000 years. Bhilis manages to hold onto his clans by proclaiming the formation of a confederacy that will be ruled not by a king, but by a council of the clan leaders. The two sides clash at the battle of Arwomek Alma. Bhilis wins easily due to the lack of organisation and cooperation among his enemies. His cousin is killed in the battle and all his tribes unanimously join the confederation. Until the first half of the 11th century, the majority of the Kabona people are nomadic, with a few towns near the coast of the Crotsomari [RL Caspian Sea] and some mining villages. But as of about 1060 or so, the people start settling down in large numbers. Mainly due to news of great prosperity in other lands due to sedentary lifestyle. Also, gold and silver ore is found, along with rich deposits of granite, marble and metals (due to expansion by the nation's armies and the assimilation of tribe distantly related to the Kabona tribes). Thanks to contact with the outside world and plenty of untapped resources, they are able to catch up to the rest of the sedentary world in terms of production and relative prosperity (by about 1419). In 1739, 12 year-old Ebkis succeeds his father as head of the Kweido clan (one of the Great Clans) and as Chief Elder (each of the Great Clans serves as Chief Elder for 7 years) for the next 6 years. Gleis Jaras, head of the Atros clan and one of Ebkis' father's friends, is appointed to aid Ebkis in his task.
