Your country's administrative divisions

Postby Ko-oren » Fri Apr 01, 2011 1:13 pm

Is your country divided into separate admistrative divisions? If so (and I think it probably is), how many? And how do they work?
Are there first level divisions in your country with more power than others? And if you have colonies, are they just like your other first level divisions?
How do your administrative divisions work?
And do you have more than one level (so for the US: counties in states, for the Netherlands municipalities in provinces)?

As for Ko-oren:
Yes, it's divided into 17 states. They all have a governor representing them in national politics.
Not really, all states have the same resources and rights, the only thing is that during elections, the 'voting power' of states is determined on their population. Which means that large states still have the same power per head, which is the point of course. We also have one colony so far, which is like a state, but just a lot further away from the rest of the states.

Yes, some of the states have smaller divisions in them, mostly municipalities. Not really anything that looks like counties, really.

The Grand Duchy is made up of 6 lesser duchies. The Grand Duchy (the federal government) is responsible for education, social services, foreign relations, economic development, and most government functions. The lesser Dukes are responsible for raising, training, equipping, and organizing legions from their duchies for the national collective defence in war, or to use for their own purposes, within bounds, in peace, and to provide advice to the Grand Duke's administration. Municipal governments deal with such issues as transportation and sanitation within their municipal boundaries, in coordination with the federal government.

Yes. We are a Federation of 20 states. Each State has a Governor in charge, its own legislative assembly and legal system. Populations range from 14 million (Kixas) to 2.3 million (Lancre).

In turn, states are divided into boroughs (individual cities) and counties (towns and rural areas). The largest cities occupy a division of a state called a municipality, which is divided into metropolitan boroughs. The smallest unit is the civil parish, a division of a county.

Kington Langley is divided into 8 counties, each with their own unitary county council but, as a centalised nation, they have no devolved powers of their own. All legislative powers lie with our national Parliament. The duties of the county councils are to manage regional affairs such as infrastructure, town planning, maintainance of public facilites and provide public services.

Capitalism is always the answer. Whenever there's a problem in capitalism, you just need some more capitalism. If the solution isn't capitalism, then it's not really a problem. If your capitalism gets damaged, you just need to throw some capitalism on it and get on with your life.

Kaiarra is divided into two states, Verash and Sarathh. Verash has control over the defense budget, the military, and certain parts of the economy, as well as civil rights. Sarath has the rest of the economy, research, and various political systems. The capital city of Aerdia is immediately between the two states, and takes care of internal conflicts and anything not controlled by one of the states. Needless to say, most political structures are close to Aerdia. Any decision made by one state can be overridden by consensus of Aerdia and the other state, and any decision made by Aerdia can be overridden by Verash and Sarathh.

Of course, most of the politics became meaningless when Kaiarra was almost destroyed.

The Southron Nation is composed of 12 individual sovereign republics; Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Franklin, Georgia, Florida, Cuba, Hispanola, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. The Southland is further divided among a variety of administrative districts that exercise limited sovereignty; The assorted Orthodox Churches, the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, the Episcopalian Church, and the various Baptist Churches; several counties in the various republics exercise varying degrees of sovereignty; the Free City of New Orleans; and the final administrative division lies between the executive and the legislative federal branches themselves.

Most of the sovereign republics are comprised of dozens of counties, municipalities, cities, and townships, nearly all of which are subservient to the state in which they reside. There are also a number of syndicalist and communal regions spread throughout the Southland that exercise their own limited degree of sovereignty. Curiously, there exists hundreds of individual anarchists in Western Florida who exercise complete individual sovereignty and proclaim themselves outside the jurisdiction of the various administrative districts in the area.

Any citizen, protesting the laws of his particular region, is free to move between the many districts. Laws of one district, region, state, or polity, may not affect another. Moreover, the Churches, in their near complete independence from the federal gov't, often times compete with the Southron legislature for citizens. Even the states are free to protest, ignore, or outright nullify any federal legislation they deem inapplicable within their territory

Valcluse has six semi-autonomous provinces. Each province has a premier which meets in the State Council every month. All provinces have the same taxes and untilities. However, each state can choose the operator of the transport system and railway system. The Provinces are also autonomous in funding as well, with the central government funding very little of provincial needs. Provinces can issue loans and funding for social groups and other gatherings and can administer funding for building and infrastructure projects. Provinces also organize communal elections.

Each Province is divided into a series of Cantons, each with their own Council of the Canton, which is run by a President. The cantons are not autonomous and are under the direct control of the central and provincial government. Each President of the Canton is a member of the Parliament. Cantons function in the same way District Councils and some counties do.

Each Canton is then divided into Communes which also have no authority. Each Commune is administered by a Communal Authority which meets once roughly every two to three months. The Communal Authority has no leader and is run by a group of citizens who are nominated and then elected to their positions within the council. Members of the Communal Authority reach agreements via a majority consensus.

4 districts, each with a Governor, District Assembly and District Court. Each district has 225 seats in Parliament, except for an extra seat in the Central district to recognize its status as the most populous. However, policy is more or less dictated from the federal Parliament.

The Imperial Federation contains eight Federal Imperial Realms - England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea which have their own parliaments and governments to govern themselves, as the Imperial Federation is largely decentralised with the Imperial Government managing Imperial affairs only.
