[Your Nation] Fashion and clothing within your nation.

Postby Aegeus » Fri Mar 11, 2011 3:25 pm

The topic says it. Just give us what the primary styles of dress in your nation. Feel free to be as expansive as you want, and if you'de like, please explain how your nation's culture and society effect the way your people choose what clothes to wear. If you'de like, feel free to tell us about the style of formal dress uniforms your military wears.

Guidelines:
-If you are going to post pictures or URLS, please put them in spoilers, so we don't clutter the thread.
-Please don't just say "Normal." There is no "Normal."
-Any time period is welcome

I will be posting my write-up in a seperate post, as it will be detailed.

We "dress" in paint and paint-like coatings, since human-style clothes would both look stupid on us and fail to prevent rust.

For convenience, all types of Decepticon outer coatings will be referred to as "paint" in this response.

Typically, a Decepticon paint job will be of two colors: a main color, and a complimentary or contrasting one. The secondary color will be present in the wing stripes and on the hands. It's also common for the feet and calves to be painted in the secondary color, lending a "boot-like" appearance. The head may or may not be painted in the main color.

The color combo isn't regulated, and is in fact typically selected specifically to make the person look different from those normally around him.

On top of this paint, clear-coat is typically applied to help preserve our shine. We also wear a thick coat of wax.

The Decepticon Seals are always present, and are usually painted in the contrasting color. Despite what is seen in propaganda shows, there is no official color for the Seal.

On a plane-form Decepticon, the Seals will be on each wing, both front and back. Removing them is a very serious act of disavowing one's allegiance to the entire Decepticon society and one's connection to Decepticon history. Since the Seal stands for far more than just the government, removing it is never done as a form of simple protest.

Our use of paint, at its core, is simply one of practicality. Metal rusts unless it's protected with some kind of impermeable coating.

Making the paint jobs unique helps us to tell each other apart. This became essential during the Repopulation - the period right after the end of the Great War of Cybertron - when we had to use high-speed factories to bring our numbers up to a viable level in a hurry.

Culturally, the style of paint represents a few things. Its boldness matches the cultural personality of the nation. The deep shine represents our successes and our pride in being Decepticons. Also, as in many places, looking like a freak or an idiot is looked down on, so the great majority of us prefer colors that don't clash.

The Decepticon Seals, as mentioned above, are extremely significant to our culture. Outside of covert foreign agents, only the absolute most disaffected person, who has willfully left Cybertron and never intends to return, would even consider being without them.

Showing even a speck of rust is culturally taboo as well as being quite uncomfortable. Decepticons will meticulously fix any corrosion even before it's visually noticeable if at all possible. This is an important driver of continuing improvements in coating technology.

Thuraskis tend to interpret "casual" as being business casual at least, so the usual attire of Thuraskis is a button-down golf or dress shirt, cotton pants and leather Oxfords for males, and a button-down golf or dress shirt, a moderate-length skirt and heels for females. Colors fall towards the darker end of the spectrum. While at work (that doesn't require heavy labor or a uniform), business suits with the jacket open or closed and ties are commonplace among both genders. Formal wear is the standard Western tuxedo/dress.

Dragoons typically wear clothing suited towards a cold environment.
Their typical style is generally formal, such times of wearing informal clothes are rare.

Casual

In the summer, the majority of the population in Toonamix is nude. The only things that are really "worn" are decorative jewelry and decorative tattoos. Jewelry is usually made from gold, silver and marble. During the winter seasons though, clothing is put on such as this on men:
Image
and this on women:
Image

Formal and Professional

These outfits are usually tight fitting, long arm and leg sleeve one piece suits of varying colors. Sometimes, depending on the occasion or occupation, various patterns can be found with these outfits.

Shoes

The shoes are molded into the shape of the wearer's feet. Shoes come in varying colors including flesh toned. These shoes are designed for comfort, sports as well as to withstand all weather conditions.

A combination of clothing is worn within the Great Empire and Dynasty.

In China a mixature of western clothing and traditional Han garb is worn.

In Korea a mixature of western clothing and traditional Korean garb is worn.

Same for Japan, western/Japanese mix.

And Viet Nam western/Vietnamese mix.

Western Clothing is extremely popular among young people with their trends and what have you.

EDIT, 12/3/2011: Added three pictures at the end.

Skinsuits

All Aegeans, from the first day they can walk, wear skinsuits. Skinsuits are skintight, airtight, plasto-fibrous bodysuits that they wear under all their clothing. These suits, in their most basic form, resemble ribbed versions of modern 2mm Neoprene wetsuits and are entered from behind by way of a closure. All skinsuits have a thick spot bracing the back of wearer's neck, and in the event of a rapid decompression, this spot automatically covers their face and seals to the neck of the suit. Because of the electro-fibrous nature of skinsuits, they can adjust their pliability, and the hood stiffens to become a helmet when deployed. Skinsuits have a small on board oxygen filtration system and supply, allowing for 12 hours of pressurization.

In their more advanced forms, skinsuits often are entered simply by clipping a collar, two bracers, and two ankle attachments to the body, and issuing a psicomp command that causes the strips of fabric attached to these clips to snap together and seal. Skinsuits of a more expensive variety may also be semi-transparent, often worn by women, and can be retrofitted to have any number of stylistic features. Some skinsuits also carry waste-management systems, though this modification is bulky and unsightly, and is only generally used for industrial purposes. Even when off world, where skinsuits are not strictly necessary, they are still almost always worn.

Fashion

Hair
Because skinsuits are mandatory, hairstyles often reflect the ability of the skinsuit helmet to cover the hair and head in it's entirety in the case of decompression. Hairstyles that are too long end up sticking out of the helmet near the seam. This is not dangerous to the wearer as a whole, as the suit compensates for the hair, however it does expose the hair to hard vacuum and flash-freezing temperatures, destroying it.

Men and women generally wear their hair short or in an updoo, letting it down only for special occasions. Aegeans are capable of adjusting the natural pigmentation of their hair and many Aegeans have stripes or even entirely colored hair. This recoloration is relatively uncommon, and most choose to still wear their hear as their natural dark brown of black.

Clothes
Aegeans often wear clothes in addition to skinsuits, though it's not taboo to simply go out in your skinsuit. Color choice varies wildly, but as the Military and Foreign Relations bureaus mandate a strict color code, many civilians choose to wear Aegean green and dark gray.

The clothing in Aegean runs the gamut, as one would expect in a pan-galactic society, however certain features are usually found on the general aegean's clothing. Clothes are often tight, small, offer low coverage, or are made of semi-translucent materials. This, though possibly being indecent by modern standards is common among aegeans, especially when they are wearing an opaque skinsuit. The hip lines of men and women of all species are considered attractive in Aegeus, and are often accented by metalic ridges. Cutaways and translucent mesh are also popular.

Aegeans almost always also bear the symbol of their employment on their recreational clothing. Every position in every tier is useful and necessary for Aegeus' continued function, and thus people feel great pride in displaying their symbol. Each major sector of business and government has a Greek letter assigned to it, and these are often found with other markings displaying the Aegean's tier within the bureau as well. For example, the Military sector is represented by a captial Delta, Infrastructure is represented by a capital Alpha, Administration is represented by a capital Sigma, and Foreign Relations are represented with a capital Xi.

Underwear
Aegeans do not wear undergarments in any real sense, as skinsuits perform all the functions of underwear. Female skinsuits are either programmed to adjust their malleability to provide bra-like support, or are equipped with negative-gravity fibers, which reduces the pull of Aegeus' artificial gravity on those areas to a minimal level.

Accessories
Aegeans accessorize as a primary method of expressing oneself, as accessories are often not restricted by a person's place of work. In some cases, such as Foreign Relations or Consumer Services, accessories are actually necessary for one's job. Only facial tattoos are even considered, and most are unpopular. Armbands with the national seal, bureau symbol, or national colors are very popular.

Jewelry is especially popular among aegeans, and most men and women wear at least some piece of jewelry. This is because jewelry sits outside the skinsuit and is not damaged by decompression. Greek symbols are common, as are complex inlaid designs. Truly expensive jewelry is made with patterns so complex that they are Matter-Forged in a foundry. Often alloys are more desirable than pure elements due to their increased durability and practicality.Gold, Titanium, Silver, Aluminum, and Copper are all commonly used in jewelry allows. The most common alloyed metals are Bronze and Brass.

Piercings around the face, nose, mouth, eyebrows, ears, and head are all fairly common, as they are constantly on display and are not under a skinsuit. Ear and face jewelry is quite complex as a result, with ear studs, shields, and rings of all varieties being the most common. Body piercings are almost unheard of and considered very exotic, as they are pressed into the flesh uncomfortably on a daily basis, get caught on interior features of the skinsuit, and can become very uncomfortably cold when the skinsuit is exposed to vacuum.

Shoes are also classified as an accessory. Aegean skinsuits all automatically stiffen and harden the soles of the feet to operate as shoes, and thus wearing shoes on top of these requires not only for the wearer to re-tune their skinsuit, but shoes are also quite expensive because they are entirely superfluous. Common choices are metal-plated boots and smooth-faced shoes for men, and high heels as well as point-toed shoes for women. Both men and women wear high boots, commonly calf, knee, or thigh-high. Short boots are quite uncommon.

People in Disskord basically wear whatever they can find, afford, make themselves, or steal off someone else. This leads to an extremely wide variety of styles, ranging from the outrageously eccentric to absolute utilitarian to being completely naked (Disskordians can be very cruel people). The only regulations on clothing are the respective uniforms for security and military forces, and to wear their uniform without being one of them generally means public execution. Our leaders in the Circle generally have good taste and dress quite professionally, buying top-of-the-line suits that only the most wealthy can afford.

When it comes to hair, males usually don't have to worry about the style since ethnic Tsvarchivans (and just about everyone has a drop of Tsvarchivan in them here except for immigrants) don't grow hair on their heads.

Womenfolk typically wear their hair in a bun with a turban.

People are often nude, but during Winter in the north and south parts of Gilthador, most are dressed. We do not have gender roles, and so our clothing is androgynous. We also do not have a differentiation between casual and formal wear. To formal events people usually just wear something clean. As a global society, clothing in Gilthador varies, but here are the most common types of dress.

Fashion

Fashion in Deus is as diverse as its culture, however a view things stand out. Recently a more cyber punk style has become popular among the women and men of Deus, with “sleeker” being better in most facets of Deusan wear. While this may be true, another movement, often called “neo-Victorian” has also gained national attention. This movement, based on the old Victorian styles with a aged modern or futuristic kick to it is becoming extremely popular with Nihili and Damon the prime champions of this new style. While neo-Victorian is often cited as only a fashion choice it is quickly becoming a whole cultural movement, with many people begging to look back and admire the old Victorian ways.

The top fads today are neon fedoras for both men and women, using one's body as a canvas for art, and several uses of tie-dye.

When Yannians wear clothes, which isn't often since nudity is generally accepted, they wear shorts or kilts, with either tartan (plaid), floral, or tie-dye designs, sometimes with a shirt or t-shirt, usually color-coordinated with, or in the same design as the kilt or short. Underwear is unheard of in Yannia.
Image

Work clothing depends on the job: for representational jobs (business people, flight attendants, etc.) both men and women wear a business suit comprising a shirt, shoes, a tie & trousers or a kilt, in winter often with a jacket and long socks or boots.

Children are usually nude, even in school, except in the mountains, during the winter, when they'll often wear a shirt, a jacket, trousers & boots.

Gelven fashion is eclectic, flamboyant, racy, and sometimes just downright weird. No two gelves dress alike, and no gelf would dream of wearing the same thing two days in a row. Sober restraint really isn't their thing, so you're highly unlikely to find a gelf of any model in a three-piece suit. Walking down a street in Liberty one could easily see a gelfess in a bikini, sarong and flowers speaking to one in an ornately brocaded robe, or someone in an elaborately ruffled dress talking to someone else wearing nothing but lingerie.

Male gelves tend to be a little more restrained than their female counterparts, and male fashion often betrays a distant relation to the dress uniforms of some of the older and more fabulous militaries, but it's equally likely to see a male gelf wearing nothing but a short kilt and a lot of tattoos.

The exception to all this is the Gelven Defense Forces, who actually have and use a uniform. This consists of a short green jacket with a Chinese collar, trousers, and boots. Officers have golden piping on theirs. The Gelven Police Force uses a similar uniform, but in blue rather than green.

Macropodines prefer not to wear too formal clothing, usually clothing is not too warm because the Kangaroo republic has a humid subtropical climate in the lowlands so most macropodines tend to wear plain t-shirts or polo shirts during summer and trousers with extra holes cut in the back for their tails to fit through. However, occasionally during cold winter days do macropodines wear warmer clothing, usually hoodies with large front pockets. In the high-lying south of the country, hoodies are more commonly worn, even during summer.

However, business suits are usually worn when appropriate, again, trousers have extra holes in the back for their tails to fit through.
