Most Synkomese member-states allow citizens to acquire firearms both as a means to ensure their own freedoms and to serve as an instrument of national defense. Controls are relatively easy in these states, requiring only proof of mental health, an absence of a criminal record, passing a firearms safety exam and the largely symbolic signing of a document promising to come to aid of the defense of the country. Firearms are mostly distributed by the state but several states have widespread private gun shops too.

Apart from Grand City, where open carry is banned, and certain places where guns are banned like national parks and nurseries, you can open carry anywhere. Closed carry is legal in Grand City, which is why so many people carry violin cases there.

Civilian purchase of firearms is relatively limited, but still frequent.

Citizens above the age of 21 are allowed to procure Level 4 and Level 5 firearms, as long as they don't have any criminal record, be free of any mental illness, and are currently holding a firearm ownership licence. When purchased, the firearm must be registered at a local police station or city hall. To get Level 3 and above weaponry, the user requires sufficient and proven training in the use of that specific firearm, and its registry requires renewals every 6 months. Automatic weapons have a maximum magazine capacity of 10 rounds if they are to be used by civilians. Rocket launchers, grenade launchers, and gun calibres above 30mm, are strictly military use only.

Firearms are more popular in the Outer and Fringe worlds, as the local fauna and/or native sentient species are typically violent, encouraging citizens to have firearms for self-defence. Hunting is also a relatively popular sport, and even Inner and Core worlders typically venture into the Outer frontiers to hunt game. Firearm ownership is typically lower at the Core and Inner worlds, due to having most of their hostile wildlife reserved in zoological institutions.

To procure a firearm ownership licence, one must be above 21 years of age, have no criminal record, be mentally stable, and, if residing within the Inner or Core worlds, be willing to pay the firearm tax, which is 8% of the price of the owned firearm per year. The licence serves as the permission of a firearm owner to own firearms. If he commits a crime involving the use of a firearm, that license is permanently revoked. Meanwhile, firearm registry is the police's way of tracking down firearms for criminal investigation, if necessary, as it includes the owner's details, firearm specifications, etc. For Level 4 and Level 5 weapons, the license is one-time. For Level 3 and up, the license must be renewed every 6 months; failure to do so will lead to fines and confiscation of the weapon.

Openly carrying firearms in a public place is illegal. Carrying firearms in one's person, as long as encased or out of sight, is legal in the Outer and Fringe worlds. To carry firearms publicly in the Core or Inner worlds, they must be within a locked case. Of course, using firearms in shooting ranges, hunting grounds, or one's own private property is completely legal.

Firearms Purchasing

Buying firearms and other weapons is extremely uncomplicated in the Aurensian Republic. There are no limitations whatsoever on the type and manner of firearms and sole discretion of sale is left to the seller. Firearms are considered personal property, are not afforded any special regulation as a result. The average household has approximately 2 firearms within it. It is extremely common to see individuals carrying firearms. Automatic weapons are also widely available.

Aurensia uses a militia-based defense system and thus firearm access is extremely important. It is common that members of the militias will be responsible for their issued firearms by their regiment.

It is also important to note Right of Man XIV which instructs the Right of Revolution:

Governments should not be abolished for transient causes, however the people have the intrinsic right to reform or abolish Government should it pervert their liberties and molest their freedom and sovereignty.

Right of Man I and VIII also protect the right of firearms, both as a means of securing personal property and of personal sovereignty.

For a Sidh, all it really takes is aurons in his account. The fact that he is a Sidh and not locked up in a labour camp is all the permit one will ever need for gun ownership. One is, however, required to obtain a certificate of proficiency in the desired weapon's use before being allowed to take one home, easily obtained by taking lessons in the nearest shooting range and passing an exam consisting of timed disassembly and assembly of the weapon, a series of marksmanship exercises and a written test pertaining to laws regulating that particular firearm class.

In principle, a Sidh may legally purchase any and all kinds of weapons, up to and including space battleships and fusion bombs. In practice, few citizens can afford (or need) anything beyond an energy rifle. The Imperial gun laws regulate mainly the usage and storage of various weapons rather than restrict their ownership.

Weapons with an area effect and/or extreme penetrating properties, for example, are forbidden to be used within a certain distance of populated areas outside wartime. On more populous worlds, local ordinances may further restrict their use to appropriately certified shooting ranges, sometimes banning their use outside wartime entirely. Weapons requiring special maintenance and storage (such as chemical weapons or explosives with limited shelf-life) are required to be stored appropriately in a safe manner. One must also be certified to handle such weapons in order to legally own them, the certificate being granted upon completion of the appropriate training course by the military or the Auxilia. Same applies for military vehicles including starships.

As said before, most Sidhae have no need for such excessive firepower, so most do not own any kind of firearms. In times of need, they would quickly be able to obtain them at the nearest Auxilia armory within their designated area of residence. Most also could not afford anything beyond a rifle in any case.

When it comes to non-Sidh subjects of the Imperium, it's a whole different matter. A human cannot own or buy a firearm legally, period - but then again, humans aren't technically considered subjects of Imperial law.

While nominally humans are banned from bearing arms, this only applies to areas outside the human ghettos, which are considered autonomous self-governed districts under the indirect administration of the Human Affairs Office of any given world. Humans are permitted to defend themselves within the ghetto, so firearm ownership is tolerated by the Sidh authorities almost to the same degree as with Sidh citizens, the difference being that humans cannot purchase their arms from legitimate sources and must therefore resort mainly to obsolete, even antiquated designs for the most part.

Arms to the ghettoes are supplied by smugglers who supply and profit from the ongoing endemic gang warfare. If caught, these smugglers can expect to be severely punished, but the authorities usually look the other way, because endemic violence helps to control the human population, divides and distracts the humans, making them unlikely to organize an uprising. Obviously, monetary "incentives" from the smugglers are also unfortunately not unheard of.

Acquiring a firearm

In order to purchase a weapon, the purchaser must obtain a weapon acquisition permit. The following information must be provided to the Ministry of Internal Affairs together with the weapon application form:

- Valid official identification

- Residence address

- Criminal record copy not older than two months

For each transfer of a weapon or an essential weapon component without a weapon acquisition permit, a written transfer contract must be concluded. Each party can keep them for up to twelve years.

The transfer contract must include the following information:

- Family name, first name, birth date, residence address and signature of the person who sells the weapon or essential weapon component

- Family name, first name, birth date, residence address and signature of the person who purchases the weapon or an essential weapon component

- Kind of weapon, manufacturer or producer, label, caliber, weapon number, and date and place of transfer

- Type and number of official identification of the person who acquires the weapon or the essential weapon component

- An indication of the processing of personal data in connection with the contract

This information must be sent within twenty-four days to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In order to purchase ammunition, the buyer must follow the same legal rules that apply to buying guns. The buyer can only buy munition for guns that they legally own and must provide the following information to the seller:

- Valid official identification (and must be older than 18 and not psychiatrically disqualified nor identified as posing security problems)

- Residence address

- Criminal record copy not older than two months

- Weapon acquisition permit not older than thirty-six months, or a weapon carrying permit not older than seventy-two months

This information must be sent within twenty-four days to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

To carry a loaded firearm in public or outdoors (and for active/reserve military and paramilitary personnel carrying firearms other than their military/paramilitary-issue personal weapons off-duty), a person must have a weapon carrying permit, which is issued only to active/reserve/retired military and paramilitary personnel, as well as citizens working in occupations such as security. Hunters can request a hunter's permit for carrying a firearm in public.

There are two conditions for getting a weapon carrying permit/hunter's permit:

- Fulfilling the conditions for a buying permit

- Passing an examination proving both weapon handling skills and knowledge regarding lawful use of the weapon

The carrying permit remains valid for a term of seventy-two months, unless otherwise surrendered or revoked.

Firearms may be transported in public as long as an appropriate justification is present. This means to transport a gun in public, the ammunition must be separated from the gun.

The transport needs to be as direct as possible and needs a valid purpose:

- For courses or exercises

- To a military warehouse and back

- To show the gun to a friend or a possible buyer

- To and from a holder of a valid arms trade permit

- To and from a specific event

Since November 21, 1957, firearms legislation in the People's Republic of Zhouran is very liberal. In accordance with the "Self-Defense Weapon Requirement" policy, which was created on November 21, 1957, there is no right to keep and bear arms in Zhouran, however, gun ownership is legal for the purposes of national defense, self-defense, hunting and sport-shooting. The reason for Zhouran's liberal gun laws is due to the nation's passionate and intense warrior culture that was created in 7 BC during the birth of the Silin Dynasty, Zhouran's long tradition of militarism, and the long-standing practice of keeping weapons at home in order to be armed, well-trained and prepared.

Zhouran thus has a relatively high gun ownership rate. As of 2020, there are about 97.5 guns per 100 residents. Thanks to the nation's liberal firearms legislation, Zhouranese citizens are permitted to purchase both semi-automatic and fully-automatic firearms. However, in order to possess a firearm, citizens require a valid reason, such as recreation or exhibition, and must be licensed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Citizens over the age of 18 who are not psychiatrically disqualified nor identified as posing security problems, and who have a clean criminal record can request such a permit. The right to possess a firearm does not include the right to carry it in public, except while hunting. At home, firearms must be kept behind locks or inoperative. Knives and swords are forbidden to be carried in public. Permits for carrying in public are issued only to active/reserve/retired military and paramilitary personnel, as well as citizens working in occupations such as security. As for individuals who participate in hunting, they can request a hunter's permit for carrying a firearm in public.

In accordance with the "Self-Defense Weapon Requirement" policy, active and reserve military personnel must keep their personal weapons at home, however it is not permitted to keep military-issued ammunition, although, compatible ammunition purchased privately by the individual is permitted. When their service has ended, military personnel have the choice of keeping their personal weapon and other selected items of their equipment. However, keeping a weapon after end of service requires a license.

The sale of ammunition is subsidized by the People's Defense Council and made available at any shooting ranges patronized by both citizens and military personnel. There is a regulatory requirement that ammunition sold at ranges must be used there.

To purchase one you need to be a Citizen, 20 or over, with proof that you pay taxes, proof of residency and employment.
Next must be trained how to properly handle a weapon, and pass a psyche evaluation.
If passed both, then you are given a license, and allowed to purchase guns and ammunition. Those in the police, and military can skip that step as they already have been trained, and taken the psyche evaluation.

Rifles and shotguns other than fully automatic and semi-automatic actions, up to and including .50 caliber.
Shotguns other than fully automatic and semi-automatic actions, up to and including 10 gauge.
Any muzzleloading or 'black powder' firearm, of any caliber.

Requirements: One must pass a written safety test, be 21, and pass a background check.

Level 2 Firearms License (2FL)
Everything permitted by the BFL.
Semi-automatic rifles up to and including .50 caliber.
Semi-automatic shotguns up to and including 10 gauge.
All handguns, up to and including .45 caliber.

Requirements: One must possess a BFL and have passed a two-day course, as well as a more stringent background check.

Concealed carry permit (Upgrade to the 2FL, not itself a separate license)
Allows concealed carry of any handgun less than .45 caliber and with no more than 15 rounds per magazine.

Requirements: One must possess a 2FL and pass another safety course. One must also demonstrate to the Public Safety Bureau that they actually need a concealed carry permit.

Class A Firearms License (AFL)
Fully automatic firearms of any caliber.
Yes, this includes machine guns and Squad Automatic Weapons.
"Sniper rifles" also.
Most other accessories, including suppressors and reflex sights.

Requirements: Requirements are not published, but AFL holders must have an absolutely perfect criminal record, be involved with the firearms industry in some way, be certifiably of sound mind, sit through an interview with a Public Safety Bureau panel, and have military experience. An inspector will visit their home to verify that they possess plenty of gun safes. The AFL is usually denied, even to people who meet the requirements.

Allows the purchase, ownership, and use of any non-machineguns with a barrel length of greater than 45cm. Mandatory competence and safety testing is required before the license is issued.

Compact weapons license
Allows the purchase, ownership, and use of any non-machineguns with a barrel length of less than 45cm, including virtually all handguns.

Machine gun license
Allows the purchase, ownership, and use of any machine gun, with barrel length according to other possessed licenses. A machine gun is defined as any weapon that fires multiple shots with a single pull of the trigger, or any weapon otherwise designed to fire continuously without individual action by the user (that last one was a last-minute loophole patch after a spate of machine-gunnings using weapons that entirely lacked recognizable triggers).

Artillery
Defined as any weapon with a bore diameter of greater than 15mm without obvious sporting or self-defense use, artillery is completely illegal for civilian ownership. Some weapons, such as small-bore anti-tank rifles, are specifically included in this category despite not otherwise fitting the criteria.

A valid Firearm License Card issued by the Ministry of Public Safety must be presented to purchase ammunition and to purchase or rent firearms. The serial numbers of all firearms are registered in the National Firearm Database and tied to the buyer's FLC. The Ministry must be notified in the event that the firearm is sold or transferred.

To be receive an FLC the individual must complete the National Standardized Course on Firearm Safety (offered in every major town and city by local police), submit to a full criminal background check, and wait a requisite 10-day waiting period.

The possession and importation of firearms by foreign citizens is illegal except under special circumstances.

Strict regulation of weapons, including firearms, are a centrepiece of the government's anti-crime programs. The main laws regarding guns in the Kingdom are the Private Weapon Restriction Act, the Weapon Control Act, and the Dangerous Sports Act.

Ownership of firearms designed exclusively to kill/injure other people by the general public are banned completely under the Private Weapon Restriction Act. All persons in violation of PWRA are subject to strong financial and criminal penalties.

Ownership of firearms used for hunting and designated as such by the Ministry of Public Safety are regulated under the Weapon Control Act. All hunting firearms must be registered with the Ministry, and all of such firearms must be stored in secure WCA-compliant containers by their owner.

Ownership of firearms used for non-hunting sport, such as Olympic shooting, are regulated under the Dangerous Sports Act and are a joint responsibility of the Ministry of Public Safety and the Office of the Deputy Minister for Sport (Ministry of Health). Such weapons are required to be stored in sport facilities and feature a "nullification charge"; a small explosive that damages a key part of the firing mechanism should the weapon be taken outside of the facility, rendering it unusable.

To own any sort of gun in the IFR, you must meet a few requirements:

-At least E-5 in any military branch (Sergeant in Ground Forces and Star Marines, Second Class Petty Officer in Navy and Starmada, and Staff Sergeant in Air Force) or sergeant in Civildef or MCHiPs or CIB agent with deemed safe clearance with an honorable discharge if not currently serving any.

-No outstanding criminal charges of drug use or domestic violence.

-Deemed mentally competent by a screening

Once conditions are met, you are able to acquire nearly any type of weapon except for explosives like grenade launchers and rocket launchers, although it certainly is a niche market. Most people who can legally own weapons only bring home their service weapon(s) for personal use, since it only requires a payment of 20 credits (~25 dollars).

You must be over 20 to get a license however, and to get one you undergo basic firearms training, something that should come almost naturally to the militant Sleetavians.

Some states have completely outlawed guns and others have not, but there are some federal rules:

No assault rifles
MUST have a background check, if the background check for some reason cannot be run you do not get the gun. Felons, in some states those with misdemeanors, the mentally ill, and people under 18 (or 21 in some places) cannot have a gun.
Although there's no real way of checking as police won't just randomly come into your home, each gun purchase comes with a safe, It is strongly recommended that you keep it locked up so children cannot get a hold of it. If you don't have children it probably isn't necessary.
Some sort of personality test (similar to the one taken by policemen)/mental health screening. This is because many people who are mentally ill may not be diagnosed. You may have to retake this when you renew your permit/license depending on your state.
A safety course is required so you know how to properly use it and can obtain a permit for it. This must be renewed every 3-5 years depending on the state.
There are limits on clip size and bullet type depending on the state.

Gun laws are relatively lax in Coursitane. Restrictions on firearms ownership are generally reserved for outlandish cases such as belt-fed machine guns, anti-materiel rifles and armor-piercing ammunition, for which there can be little to no reasonable justification for a civilian to own. Both the right to bear arms and the inherent right of self-defense are legally enshrined in the Republic's Constitution.

In order to purchase a gun, one would simply have to walk into a gun shop and present a Government-issued photo ID. No specialized license is required to purchase a firearm, but you must be at least 18 years of age.

The firearms dealer is required by law to make a copy of the ID and keep meticulous records of their sales. They also must call their local police station to ensure the ID is valid, review the person's criminal history, see if they are wanted by the police or otherwise restricted from owning firearms due to mental health history.

If the dealer fails to do this, and the gun is used by the buyer in a crime, the dealer may be charged as an accomplice.

Once the person is cleared by the police, they may select the firearm they want, pay for it and be on their way. The firearm must be transported in a safe and secure container, or otherwise concealed about their person before they leave the shop.

Many urban areas prohibit the discharge of firearms within their city limits, and open (unconcealed) carry is illegal throughout the country.
