If you are a soldier who only has his rifle and hand grenades, and there is a house across the street and a guy shooting at you from its window so you throw a grenade in to save your self and kill him, and than later you find out there were 10 civilians inside. That sucks, but it's acceptable casualties as it was that guy or you and you could not have known they were there.

On the other hand, if you are perfectly safe at the helm of a remotely controlled vehicle (meaning that the only thing you stand to lose is money) on the other side of the planet (meaning that the enemy posed absolutely no threat to you or your nation), mercilessly hunting down people who your government wants assassinated using high tech detection equipment and smart munitions than 1 in 5 deaths being a civilian is completely unacceptable. You have the best technology in the world at your fingertips and are under no stress, no danger and have no excuse not to use it wisely.

Purpelia does not reflect my actual world views. In fact, the vast majority of Purpelian cannon is meant to shock and thus deliberately insane. I just like playing with the idea of a country of madmen utterly convinced that everyone else are the barbarians. So play along or not but don't ever think it's for real.

The above post contains hyperbole, metaphoric language, embellishment and exaggeration. It may also include badly translated figures of speech and misused idioms. Analyze accordingly.

That's not what the drone programme is about.
The people targeted pose serious threats to coalition lives and local civilian lives. It's just that, because coalition military power has forced the command structure out of the immediate combat zone, they've fled and regrouped in Pakistan, which can't control them itself.

Dead is dead. If you are willing to accept however many deaths in exchange for a certain objective, then splitting hairs between X and Y methods is a complete waste of time. Unless of course the real objective is delude people (or yourself) into thinking you are a highly principled actor who only kills with bullets and grenades.

In that case you should send in SpecOps to shoot everything that moves. Then you can solemnly proclaim you had no choice and they blew up the orphanage in self defense. Double points if one of your soldiers dies on the raid. Triple points if one of them is captured. Then you get to invade the country guilt-free. Leave no man behind and all.

Remotely operated armored engineering vehicles still occupy their little niche. Notably in the USSR they were used to help build the sarcophagus at Chernobyl.

I guess I should have been more clear about that.

Because of the technology it was built with, the Teletank itself suffered from primitive controls and the lack of any onboard cameras to aid in driving and targeting. It did spawn a line of more successful remote engineering vehicles (I saw some mention of remote-controlled wire-cutting tanks at Kursk, but I'm skeptical about the lack of a source), which as you pointed out still see service today. And as the edgy political discussion has made clear, point-and-shoot drones are a staple of defense technology today.

That being said, I have my doubts about the feasibility of a remote-controlled main battle tank - if a two-man causes issues, a zero-man crew will cause more. And a completely autonomous combat vehicle that moves, targets, and fires with no human input whatsoever (which is what was originally suggested) would require features that are either impractical or impossible with modern technology.

All you would particularly need to do would be defend yourself. Because of your location, there is no logical reason for you to be gallivanting around in distant countries, so you shouldn't worry about expeditionary warfare. This is more a question for the NS Realism Consultancy Thread.

If you want something unusual, here's an assessment of the Iraqi doctrine.
