So yeah the katana is like, really mediocre.

Actually I might make a katana then give it a really horrible backstory that ends with it being destroyed in a dishonourabru fashion.

Meh it's basically a metal stick. An axe however is the pure connection between worker and soldier.

An axe isn't really all that fighty. Sure Northern Europe liked them, but the Romans killed them all.

It's the weapon tool of the poor. A truer symbol for the working class than the hammer or sickle. The axe has razed and raised cities since the beginning of man and maybe into it's end. It's been the symbol of freedom and the symbol of savagery. Uniting and spittling since it's creation. No it's not a weapon and no it's not a tool. It is life.

Also it's not the Roman infantry that won any wars on their own. Without the extreme use of auxiliary support the Romans would have lost everything in every war.

The battle axe was a fine weapon. Vikings used them to great effect. Other groups like the Batavi used them as well and they were very highly rated as auxiliaries and taken very serious as enemies.

But formation style ancient battle tactics were superiour to the tactics used by the "barbarians". The battle axe was unsuited for those tactics.
However mounted archers/light cavalry really made the Roman tactics more obsolete than the style of combat used by the barbarians.

A steel longsword is probably better than a battle axe but also much more expensive.
