Government dismisses Rio Cana "propaganda"

The government of Aura has called "propaganda" a recent quasi-military parade in Rio Cana made up of supposedly Aurean citizens. A junior security minister said "There probably was a few real Aureans there and why not? It looked a silly parade to have fun at." But he then said "But we have intelligence to demonstrate a lot of the people in, and the people organizing the parade, were Rio Cana military."

The parade took place in an area Rio Cana long has claimed but that is not recognized as Rio Canan. The government of Aurea routinely warns against Rio Cana operatives in the area and has had to close the border several times, but most recently for the pandemic and not security concerns.

A more senior government official said "We want friendly relations with Rio Cana and we want both our countries to move on and mature. But these silly games from the North keep preventing it. It saddens us really."

Inaugural Centenary Cup of South America in 2022

The Ministry of Sports in Santa Thereza announces the start of the Centenary Cup of South America. It becomes the first of its kind to ever debut in the region. Alongside the international tournament, which is expected to gross over T$4 Billion Reais, the Therezan Footballing Confederation began the league fixtures for the National League and Cup. The investment is reasoned by Gilson Guerra Ruiz as a "Crucial evolvement of Therezan athletics, where such cultural obligation will gain world-benchmark athletic facilities and endorsements to rise the Nationals to one of the best competitive leagues in the world."

Miradourense, the winners of the first Copa Santa Thereza since turning professional this year, share the achievement with Fortaleza, who have won the Nationals for the first time in 2022. The National League grossed T$789 Millions Reais, the most for any league in the world. Therezans will attempt to hone all local talent into the league and develop the already successful national team. A promising player is Renatinho, top scorer for Miradourense in the calendar year. Now a starting choice for the World Series, Santa Thereza will go for glory together with the Tinho' and participate in their first entry into FIFA at the 2022 Quatar World Cup.

Civil Services strike from Monday

The Civil Services Union has announced talks with the government over pay have failed and that all 50,000 union members will strike from Monday after the members overwhelmingly backed the move.

The Civil Services is the central bureaucratic arm of the government administering many services from taxes to social welfare payments to local government services (though not hospitals, police or the military) and the strike is expected to severely impact provision.

Approximately 90% of the Civil Services staff are members of the Civil Services Union and they voted by 71% to strike with 29% against strike action.

The union and government have been locked in a bitter dispute over pay for the last six months with the union demanding a 10% pay rise to make up for "under investment and the rising cost of living" of the staff with the government countering with a one-off 2.5% rise.

Amid tight state finances, the government has locked Civil Services pay rises to 1% for the past number of years, despite inflation now crawling toward double figures in that time.

Once considered a prestigious institution the Civil Services have been rocked with scandals of corruption and embezzlement in recent years and the government has said that pay will significantly rise once these issues have been addressed but the union say this is an excuse not to pay higher wages and it is the government's job to find and stomp out corruption.

The Civil Services Union is now coordinating with other unions to try and coordinate a partial general strike to force employers to pay more in the wake of the energy crisis and cost of living crisis unfolding across the world.

Amajana is one of the poorest countries in South America and wages are considerably lower than even nearby countries.

.The Times of Amajana.

Week-long general strike from May Day

For the first time in more than a decade, a general strike will take place across Amajana from May Day. Set to last one week, it follows on from a strike held five weeks ago by the Civil Services staff.

The strike is taking place to protest the rapidly rising cost of living as well as levels of poverty within the country. Over the last decade, salaries have risen 25% on average while the cost of living (which covers food, energy, etc.) has risen nearly 100% in Amajana.

The general strike was called for by the Council of Trade Unions, which the Civil Services Union is a member of, and was overwhelmingly backed by members. As of Wednesday 27 April the COTU reported 76% of the members had voted and, of those, 85% had voted in favour of the strike. The COTU are calling on the government to take immediate action to remedy what they term the cost of living crisis, including nationalising certain sectors of the economy such as energy.

The last general strike occurred in 2011 and brought the country to a standstill. There are no worries that the same will occur this time round. The government has announced the army will be on standby to "take action where necessary" to maintain order and security. A spokesperson for the government also said that they were hopeful last minute talks might avert the strike action, though a spokesperson for the COTU said this was unlikely.

Virus restrictions lifted at Military Parade for Independence Day

Festive air was breathed today at the city of Luxia, during the official Military Parade for Independence Day, where President Aralux addressed the nation before the start of the parade.

Image

The President started his speech by congratulating every member of the medical sector, for their courage in dealing with an unknown disease. The President then moved on to recognize the spirit and strength of character shown by the general population in the face of such hardships.

President Aralux finished his speech by informing that mask mandates were lifted throughout all Araxa, effective immediately, as well as a 3.4Bn stimulus for vaccine research, so that Araxa would not be unprepared in the event of another outbreak of this virus or any other.

Image

After his speech, all four Military branches of the Araxan army marched as it is usual for these events. Some vehicles were painted white in order to symbolize renewed hope -according to some state sources.

Activist groups close to government announced mask burning pyres will be held tomorrow at noon, at least on five cities, at the main square, as a way for the population to celebrate another Araxan victory.

Nation mourns ‘Queen of Hearts’

Image
Queen Elizabeth II
1926–2022
Prime Minister Dean Smith has led the nation in paying its respects to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II who has died aged 96.

Smith, who spoke to the nation in a somber televised address earlier today, described the late monarch as ‘Queen of Hearts’ and commended her 70-year reign as ‘flawless and exemplary service’.

‘Hers was a life of unwavering duty and devotion,’ the prime minister said, ‘with endless compassion and care for her people.’ He continued, ‘She wasn’t born to be Queen, but when that destiny was thrust upon her, she swore an oath to God and the people to serve them however long or short her life may be. She was gifted with a long life and in turn gifted us with an unrivalled, flawless and exemplary service.’

He added, ‘Queen Elizabeth was a living link to our past and a guiding light for our future. That light has now sadly gone out but we will always remember its warmth. We will remember her as a constant in our national life, to offer comfort in trying times and encouragement in times of celebration and jubilation.’

Smith went on, ‘It is only when we lose something, we realise how precious it was. Truly she was precious and we were lucky to have such a wonderfully dedicated woman as our sovereign. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen of Hearts.’

‘Though we bitterly mourn Queen Elizabeth’s passing and the ending of her extraordinary reign,’ the prime minister concluded, ‘we know that her son and heir, His Majesty the King, will continue her legacy of service and duty, and we will fully support him in this endeavour as the late Queen would have wanted. God save the King.’

The prime minister announced a 10-day period of mourning, and flags have been ordered to half mast across all government buildings during that time. It is expected the prime minister and/or Governor-General will attend the funeral in London, though details are still to be determined.

Prime Minister calls snap election

Prime Minister Dirk Borst has called a snap election for November 23 after his governing coalition's junior partner quit yesterday. The Democratic Alliance (DA) formally resigned from the government after a scandal involving contracts for equipment during the pandemic. A report released in September criticized the government for "improperly conducting" contract negotiations for personal protection equipment (PPE) such as face masks and overalls for medical staff and ventilators for patients. The report - which is unrecognized as official by the government - estimated the overpayments on equipment to be close to 85 million guilders (approx. USD 47,5 million).

The DA was the junior partner of the three-party coalition alongside the National Democratic Party (NDP) of Prime Minister Dirk Borst and the Socialist Workers Party (SAP) of Deputy Prime Minister Marjolijn Beumers. The coalition had a bare majority of 51 to 49 in the 100 member parliament. With the 6 DA members leaving the coalition, it means the remaining parties could not pass a budget which is a requirement to remain in office. As a result, the prime minister requested parliament be dissolved and a new election be called for November 23.

Speaking to the media after announcing the snap election, Prime Minister Borst said he was proud of his government's record in office and wanted to continue its work. He added he was disappointed with the decision of the DA to leave the government but did not rule out working with them in a future government. However, the other junior coalition partner, the SAP, has said it hopes for a more left-leaning government after the election with its leader Deputy Prime Minister Beumers saying she would probably choose not to work with DA again.

Opinion polls show the NDP flagging against main rivals the Pomeron People's Party (PVP) but that the NDP may return to government on the strength of prospective coalition partners.

Third parties set to prosper in midterms—opinion polls

Oct. 13, 2022M

Pollsters are predicting that so-called "third parties" will make the biggest gains in next month's midterm elections, marking the first time in 30 years that no party would control either chamber of the General Court, the country's legislature.

Data taken over the last 2 weeks and released on Wednesday show the left-wing Progressive Party in particular set to do well as voters react to the ongoing cost of living crisis and the long-term impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy and health sector. The two "main" parties, the center-right National Party of President Carlos Vega and the center-left Liberal Party—which control the Senate and Chamber of Representatives, respectively—are both set to take big hits in their races. The National Party is forecast to lose up to 6 of its 19 seats in the Senate while the Liberal Party could lose as many as 15 seats in the Chamber.

The reaction to the predictions has been understandably mixed. Representative Amanda Martín, the leader of the Progressive Party in the Chamber, welcomed the news saying, "People are tired of the same old parties and the same old politics. We need and want a radical change to tackle socio-economic and environmental concerns." Mirta Palomo, the President of the Chamber of Representatives and leader of the Liberal Party there, said the polls were "concerning" but said she was confident her party could retain control of the Chamber, "The Liberal Party is listening. We hear people's concerns and we're offering answers. If the voters elect a divided government, the problems won't be addressed." Senator José Ángel Alonso echoed that warning while also striking a conciliatory note, "It's important that we—all the leaders and politicians—come together to draw up a way out of the economic chaos caused by the pandemic. If we're more concerned about who wins [control of the legislature] then we're not focused on helping the country when it needs it most."

The predicted deadlock in the General Court could lead to legislative and budgetary paralysis at a time when the country faces economic uncertainty. According to the same opinion polls, the economy is the main concern of voters who intend to cast a ballot in November: 39% of those polled said it was their top concern in considering who to vote for. This was followed by public health (30%) and then the environment (19%).

Liberals and Nationals lose majorities but defy expectations

Nov. 17, 2022

For the first time in 32 years, no party will control either chamber of the General Court. Despite losing their majorities, the Liberal Party and the National Party fared better than expected in the Chamber of Representatives and Senate, respectively. In the lower house of the General Court, the Chamber of Representatives, the Liberal Party made a net loss of 5 seats to finish with 47 while in the Senate the National Party made net losses of 2 seats to finish on 17.

Elsewhere in the election, the Progressive Party made gains and now holds the balance of power in the Chamber. It will almost certainly work with the Liberal Party but may see them have to tack to the left on the economy, environment and social justice. While the Freedom Party failed to make any gains, like the Progressives in the Chamber, it will hold the balance of power in the Senate. Its 2 senators there coupled with the National Party's caucus and the Vice President's tie-breaker vote will likely keep the Senate right-leaning for the coming term.

President Carlos Vega said the result would make working with legislators "different" and "potentially difficult." The President is in his second and final term and will face his final 2 years in office as a so called lame duck beholden to the whims General Court rather than directing it.

The election took place on Sunday, November 13, but due to the ranked choice voting system used in Entre Rios, results often aren't known for several days afterward as ballots are counted and re-counted in accordance with voters' preferences. The new legislators take office on January 3 next year.

Pomeron set for first woman PM as PVP take historic win

Pomeron is on course to get its first woman prime minister after Lijsbeth Vroomen's conservative People's Party of Pomeron (PVP) came out on top in Wednesday's general election. Her PVP will form the largest party in the States of Pomeron (the parliament) for the first time after winning 29 of the 100 seats up for election. Vroomen, the firebrand former lawyer who became an unexpected hit during the campaign, is expected to lead the next government once it is formed.

Meanwhile yesterday's historic election marks the first time since 1973 that the centre-left National Democratic Party (NDP) has not won the most seats. The party came second, albeit a close second, winning 27 seats; though this still constitutes its worst ever result. Their junior coalition partners in the outgoing government also lost big: the Socialist Workers Party (SAP) lost nearly half its seats to finish on 7; its worst result since 2009.

Despite this obvious punishment by voters, the other former member of the previous government (and indeed the party that brought it down), the liberal Democratic Alternative (DA), increased its seats to 10; assumed by some commenters to be a reward for their holding the last government to account. Two smaller parties also doubled their representation: the centrist Party for Progress (PVV) won 7 seats while the environmentalist Green Party (GP) won 6 seats. While the other minor parties saw few changes, the Islamic Party of Pomeron (IPP) lost all but 1 of its seats and only just crossed the 1% threshold to remain in the States; likely owing to a scandal involving accusations against its founder and leader of inappropriate behaviour.

Overall, politics experts and analysts concur that it appears voters punished the outgoing left-of-centre government for its handling (or mishandling) of the pandemic and cost of living crisis while not necessarily giving their confidence to a right-of-centre alternative.

Although it is not immediately clear which combination of parties will form the next government, one certainty is that it will not be led by Dirk Borst. Prime Minister since 2013, Borst announced last night he would resign as prime minister and party leader once a new government could be formed. He added that he thought it "unlikely" his NDP would play a part in such a government.

No new cabinet until 2023

There will be no new cabinet announced before new year, a spokesperson has said. Government formation talks have been ongoing since November's general election but there has been limited progress. So far the People's Party of Pomeron (PVP) and Democratic Alternative (DA) have agreed to work together but they are now struggling to find additional partners who will work with one another.

The two parties together hold 39 of the 51 seats needed for a majority in the States of Pomeron, the national legislature. It has been said the PVP prefer a more conservative cabinet with the Party for Progress (PVV) and the Farmers Union (BV) while the DA prefer a more centrist cabinet with PVV and the Green Party (GP). Each arrangement would have a majority in the States of Pomeron, with PVP-DA-PVV-BV having exactly 51 seats and PVP-DA-PVV-GP having 52 seats. However, PVP will not make natural allies with GP and DA will not make natural allies with BV.

Formation talks will end this week ahead of the festive period and resume in January 2023. The president has indicated he is hopeful a cabinet can be found and named in the new year and that new elections are not a possibility at this stage.

New cabinet to be sworn in

President Diederik Boer will officially appoint the new cabinet today and in doing do will name Lijsbeth Vroomen as Pomeron's first female prime minister. The appointment comes after a breakthrough in government formation talks last week that saw a four-party agreement finalized.

The new cabinet—"het Kabinet-Vroomen" in Dutch—will have exactly the 51 seats needed for a majority in the States of Pomeron (parliament). The parties forming Pomeron's twenty-third cabinet will be the conservative Pomeronian People's Party (PVP), the liberal Democratic Alternative (DA), the centrist Party for Progress (PVV) and the agrarian, rural interests Farmers Union (BV).

While many—not only women—have celebrated the milestone of the first female prime minister, some groups have expressed concern over Vroomen's views. A practising Christian, Vroomen has stated she opposes abortion and has been critical of trans rights activists. While she also previously expressed opposition to gay marriage and adoption, she has since stated she now supports these. She was a vocal opponent of an assisted dying bill in the previous parliament and has said her government will not re-introduce the bill.

Vroomen has also pledged to tackle rising crime and to revitalize the national economy which is still smaller than it was pre-pandemic. With poverty on the rise, she has set her government to task to build thousands of new, affordable homes, including by building new towns to move people away from the overcrowded capital. Environmental campaigners strongly oppose this and consider it detrimental to the Amazon Rainforest where the new towns are likely to encroach.

"We offered the voters change," said Vroomen after last week's government formation breakthrough, "and now we're going to deliver it."

Castroreale condemns the decision of Rio Cana

Despite being a neutral nation, Castroreale did not like the current decision of Rio Cana to break ties with Pauruguay due to a honestly not very important award. President Hue, with the approval of the senate, already informed the Rio Canan Embassy in Cruzeiro that Rubber, Minerals, Wood and similar materials sold to Rio Cana by using the Amazon River will receive additional taxes that will make them much more expensive to buy.
President Hue also expects that the rest of South America agress with the decision

President Hues sends a message to General Rodriguez

Even thought the Rio Canan decision was "to Due to illegal contraband smuggling by smugglers who are currently using river boats that fly the Castroreale flag", many Castrorealean Ships carrying many different goods were sunken in international, rio canan and Amazonian waters, killing many innocent people along the way. The situation got even more tense, after the largest civilian ship, the "Grande Primeiro" got sunk by the Rio canan navy by mistake, killing 30,000 people in the process, and everything that was being send to mainland got lost in the water.
President Hue decided to send a message to General Rodriguez, asking for a meeting to solve the situation in the capital of Castroreale, Cruzeiro, Everything related to the travel would be paid by the Castroreale Government and the goal (according to sources inside the government) is to get a peaceful solution to this situation while keeping Castroreale as a safe nation. However, most government affairs are hidden from the public (for obvious reasons) so we are not sure.

Luxia, Feb 23rd, 2023,

The Republic of Araxa stands perplexed at the decision taken by the Republic of Rio Cana of breaking diplomatic ties with the Republic of Pauruguay. The Republic of Araxa firmly believes that every nation is autonomous in deciding their commercial, cultural and political partnerships on a local, regional and worldwide level; however, it has come to our attention the forced displacement of tourists and residents coming from the Republic of Pauruguay, based on the actions taken, not even by the actions of their own government, but instead as a consequence of an award bestowed upon said country.

The Republic of Araxa condemns this act of aggression towards innocent citizens and residents of the Republic of Pauruguay. It is unacceptable to force individuals to leave their homes and belongings behind, even more so, confiscating their belongings, violating international law and common sense. Such actions are not only inhumane but also severely damage the reputation of the Republic of Rio Cana on the global stage.

The Republic of Araxa calls for an immediate cessation of these activities and urges the Republic of Rio Cana to reconsider its actions. Diplomatic channels should remain open and engaged, as it is crucial for peaceful resolution of conflicts and the advancement of mutual interests. However, effective immediately, we have temporarily called our ambassador in the Republic of Rio Cana for consultations. We have also raised the import tariffs an average of 2% on several imported items consumed in the Republic of Araxa which are currently imported from the Republic of Rio Cana.

Furthermore, the Republic of Araxa strongly condemns the hostile actions taken by the Republic of Rio Cana on commercial ships with the Federation of Castroreale flag. As a means to contribute to regional peace, the government of the Republic of Araxa wishes to offer the cities of Luxia or Eltia as possible neutral meeting points for further discussions that put an end to the crisis.

We stand in solidarity with the Republic of Pauruguay and urge the international community to join us in condemning these actions. The Republic of Araxa reaffirms its commitment to upholding international law and human rights and calls on all nations to do the same.

Basurto announces May 21 to be Election Day.

Over 90 million voters will have the chance to take part in the largest ever democratic exercise in South American history this year after the Prime Minister of Aurea, Marco Basurto, announced the day of the 2023 general election to be May 21.

Mr. Basurto will hold an audience with the Emperor sometime over the weekend to formally request the dissolution of the Imperial Parliament and the calling of the 2023 general election but he confirmed the date today at a press conference. Basurto has served as prime minister since 2015 when his rightist Social Democratic Party won a rare majority in the Chamber of Representatives. He won a second term in 2019 -- the first time since 1972 a right-wing government was elected to a second term -- but did not secure another majority and has since relied on the support of other parties in the Chamber to remain in power.

However, this time, the prime minister and his party will have a much harder task to try to get re-elected. His party is sinking in the opinion polls after the pandemic and cost of living crisis severely impacted Aurea. Although the economy has recovered to pre-pandemic levels, many are seeing a squeeze on their pay checks as wages fail to track with inflation and the cost of food and housing grows greater. Just in November, Mr. Basurto announced a series of spending packages designed to ease the cost of living crisis but critics have said it is too little too late.

On the other side of the spectrum after near a decade in opposition the leftist Socialist Party is hopeful it can return to power. The new leader, Frederico Teixeira Souza has spent the last year setting out a "alternative Aurea" where social, economic and environmental justice are the priorities. However, the road is not exactly clear for Mr. Teixeira who will probably need the support of centrists to govern, which may want to calm his radical vision.

There are 518 members of the Chamber of Representatives that are elected on a state level with each state's number of representatives decided on its population. In the Senate -- where each state has equal representation -- 33 of the 99 members will be elected.

Castroreale government lies/Our diplomats in Arax being recalled

The government of Castroreale has wrongly accused our nation of sinking one Castroreale ship which resulted in the loss of 30000 Castroreale citizens. When asked about this the secretary of state commented "30000, seems we must have sunk a an island. Ha Ha. Do not be fooled by all this propaganda being spewed out by the Castroreale leadership. We do advise the Castroreale to be much more careful in what they communicate to the world. That is, if they want to avoid a major international incident which would not go well for them."

When asked about Araxas comment. The secretary said "in response to Araxa recall of there diplomats, the government has decided to recall for consultations all of our diplomats currently stationed in Arax. When they will be sent back is not known. It all depends on how the Araxa government responds. In the meantime, all imports from Arax are to levied an additional 2% import tax.

When asked about the upcoming elections in the rival nation of Aurea which we currently have no official diplomatic ties with the secretary said "We hope the people of Aurea finally come to there senses and vote in a government which will dismantle the corrupt monarchy which rules that nation."

Seems the political situations heating up the world has spread to South America.
