To what extent does your government align with this theory?

Postby Cedarwood River » Sun Aug 21, 2011 3:20 pm

"The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilised community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not sufficient warrant. He cannot rightfully be compelled to do or forbear because it will be better for him to do so, because it will make him happier, because, in the opinion of others, to do so would be wise, or even right... The only part of the conduct of anyone, for which he is amenable to society, is that which concerns others. In the part which merely concerns himself, his independence is, of right, absolute. Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign."
~ John Stuart Mill

That is to say, to what extent does your government value the freedom of the individual, in a civil sense? Do your government's policies reflect the ideas of the social liberal, such as Mr. Mill here, or are they more to the tune of social conservatives such as Edmund Burke?

Discuss.

My government merges western feudal and clerical values with russian autocratic weltanschaung, with some elements of soviet political theorization.
Oh, and a bit of Fascism.

It is the core basis underlying our government system, with the individual actually being considered a level of government in their own right. See my wiki (below) for details.

Yes, Litresha does strive to follow that theory. I don't ban anything unless it would hurt anybody besides the main person. For example, I do legalize some drugs, but alcohol is carefully watched and occasionally prohibited if drunk driving and accidents involving it are high.

Once a person reaches the age of majority (17) in the Heathen Tribal Confederacy of Dusk Kittens, he or she is more or less free to do whatever he/she wants as long as it doesn't infringe on anyone else's rights. There are some cases where the age of consent is lower than 17, namely, in connection with alcohol, tobacco, and soft drugs like Cannabis. However, tribe is paramount, and there are obligations to one's tribe which, if not met, may result in exile and excommunication.

A person's actions or inactions towards themselves will inevitably have repercussions which affect others. While in theory, the above sounds good, especially to Libertarians, I disagree with it on the principle that it does not take into account the impact self-action/inaction has on the people around them. I've experienced first-hand what kind of damage a suicide inflicts on people around them. I've watched drug (and alcohol) and use and abuse destroy families, careers, and physically harm others. And that's just two types of destructive behavior that are more high profile and high impact than some others.

The only actions that the government has the authority to diminish are those of force, coercion, and exploitation. All other actions, particularly those which are potentially harmful to others, but not directly, are not actionable offenses. Civil liberties are taken quite seriously in Tsvarchi, and such things deemed as such cannot be removed from them, nor can the individual decide to do so.

Tsvarchivan society tends to be of the liberal variety, and is based around the concept that what does not harm anyone but oneself, is appropriate and acceptable, as the individual is to decide what is or isn't acceptable to them, so long as it only involves them. When one's actions directly harm others, it then becomes a matter of the state to intervene and rectify the situation appropriately.

There is no national Government to follow or oppose this theory, however several communities and local government-like entities vary dramatically in their view of the free individual.

Individualism is detrimental to the Community. While each and every comrade-citizen matters and all their ideals matter, they must first work towards the forwarding of the commune, of their fellows before they can be individual.

Such is the outlook of the Party and State; such is the outlook of the Proletariat Dictatorship of China.

Art.8 Liberty. Citizens shall enjoy political liberty in accordance to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's notion
“Liberty is obedience to the law which one has laid down for oneself” and social liberty in accordance to
John Stuart Mill's notion ''Over one's mind and over one's body the individual is sovereign''.

That was a quote from the Federal Constitution. The individual and its liberty are very important to us.

What a brilliant lie.

We admit that the government does exercise some restrictions on individual freedoms. Hard drugs are illegal, for example. And in some states, most soft drugs are illegal too.

We align completely with this theory: Any individual is free to kill themselves privately in any manner they choose. If your chosen method of self harm can be done without creating a public nuisance, you are free to do so. Even if you do create a public nuisance, you are cited for creating a public nuisance, not for the act in question, which is legal. If you wish to drug yourself completely insensate and die horribly in a pool of your own vomit, you are free to do so and there is no law which prevents you from doing so.

Scanderan culture have always valued obedience and loyalty to those higher above oneself on the social hierarchy as a result so are obedience something that the crown and nobility expects from the federal subjects in return for their protection, as a result so are the absolute royal federation built upon obedience, duty, laws and strict unwritten social codes of conduct towards ones family, religion and masters rather than freedom to do as one wish even if micromanagement of the federal subjects lives are still nothing that are carried out as it would require too much effort and nobody would gain anything from it.
