In terms of backstory, certainly.

In terms of current events, it gets a little iffy but can still be done. Maurepas, for example, is a separatist southern Louisiana (to oversimplify) that is tied rather closely to the modern more-or-less-real-life United States. This is okay because the IRL US Army doesn't immediately fly to Maurepas' aid all the time; the real-world aspects are just sidenotes mentioned for flavor.

To take an example from earlier in the thread, it follows similar logic to that of "mentioning Drizzt is okay; writing new adventures for him is not."

I still don't get. What is the difference between NS and II? and where do alternate reality threads go?
Kalaspia-Shimarata's flag represents the Union between K&S. The dark blue represents the sea and the light blue represents the sky. In Kalashi language considers light blue and dark blue to be different colours. England colonised, and unified K&S, between 1774 and 1953, and English, light blue and dark blue are considered to be the same colour. Therefore, the contrast between dark blue and light blue represents the union, but the differences between K&S where as blue being two but simultaneously one colour represents K&S being two, but simultaniously one entity. The opposite to the symmetry represents the unity and indipendance of K&S, whilst also representing the Kalashi culture of opposite symmetry.KS is 75% Christian, hence the cross.

Functionally, none.

and where do alternate reality threads go?

Originally, nowhere. Now, F7.

Than why are there two?

Good question. The answer isn't particularly rational, since "well-meaning differentiation which eventually failed and just created new forum cliques whose self-identifying won't allow a painless reversion" doesn't make intuitive sense. "That's just the way it is" is the short version.

The way I've viewed it, II is for actual international relations between nations while NationStates is the proper places for competitions, character threads(like the school threads), etc.
So, just for simple identification: If the thread deals with high-level international relations, II. If note, NS. (This is just how I view it, however.)

Ok... star wars nerds and other RPS game nerds need to stop trying to make this game into something its not. The premise behind this game is simple... make a country (your country), call it what you want, make your own flag, and decide on issues as they are presented as you please. Don't sit there and try to recreate the star wars empire as you see fit... this isn't star wars! This is supposed to be a simulation of how you (a member of the general populous) would govern a country of your own and how that country would affect its region and the rest of the world. If you want to play star wars and dominate the galaxy there are plenty of pc, xbox, and ps3 games available for that, so save up your allowance and go get one of those games.

One question:
My nation, United Kingdom UK1, is, by your standards, a "weird" alternate-history breakaway version of the United Kingdom (except enlarged on a photocopier in geographical size, so to speak!)

However, it's the United Kingdom in name only, the culture's different etc., since I suppose nation names cannot be, by default, copyrighted, can they?

One other question: where would you draw the line on parodies of RL things in your alternate-history nation, e.g. Chryston is a parody of Chrysler with a Scottish twist to it, etc. ?
[spoiler=About Me]Based on the United Kingdom, but enlarged version with alternate history.
On IIWiki
I have multiple puppets here; only a select few are used to represent the continent of Astholm; others used represent Westholme, and do not artificially boost my nation's statistics.Previously i used puppets with nation names that did not identify as Astholm (e.g. Australis Australia; now all new puppets use ASTHLM, NORTHLM, SOUTHLM, WESTHLM (HLM denoting The Holmes.
NOTE: Other uses of Astholm here have a different continuity and refer to work created by the user Astholm, not the nation

I've been toying with the idea of starting an RP, but reading this I'm not entirely sure it would be allowed.

The basic premise is that the year is 1900, on planet Earth. In the 1870s, scientists started to experiment with steam technology to replace coal. During the 1880s and 1890s the military of leading nations (Britain, the US, Germany, France, and so on) began using it, and it has recently been seen in civilian use as well.

So, it would be an alternate version of Earth, but there would be no re-enactments of history. From history in the 1870s up to the present (1900) everything would be Earth in name only. The players would re-create the country's history from 1870-1900 entirely. Maybe the player of Britain wanted to have the military overthrow the monarchy using the new steam technology in the 1890s and so on.

So, would this be alright?
Disparaging comments about communists are only partly sincere and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Scolopendra wrote:Summary: Yes, you can make an alternate-history version of a country that split off of the real life timeline somewhere back a ways (many people already have). No, you cannot make a carbon copy for the purpose of reenacting or doing an alternate version of some historical event. You cannot refight WW2 as the Nazis, Soviets, British Empire, Japanese Empire, French Empire, and the States; you cannot refight the Cold War with Soviet and USA (and loads of proxy state) clones.

I would need a clarification on this, I understand that by playing a nation like an Austro-Hungarian and Bohemian Monarchy would sensibly require some use of the history of the Austrian Empire. My question is, so this would imply that it is ok for me to borrow some history from the Austrians as long as it is several hundred years ago? And seeing that my nation is Modern Times and a bit Post Modern Times, is this history borrowing I am pondering over acceptable?

So, is it okay to do a [FT] style in the Halo universe, and reference what happens, maybe even have some halo pro/antagonists show up for brief periods if it follows the canon plot in there areas?

and, while this doesn't fit my last question, is there away to change your countries name?

So wait,
Could I use China (As in, Carbon Copy of Modern China) in a RP?
Example:
"China still owns many bases across Jinwoy..."
