From late last February to the end of last April, I ran the first NationStates Flag Bracket. It was a much greater success than I anticipated, and clearly, there was demand for this type of competition. A lot of players wanted to submit flags but couldn't, and others wanted to submit different ones than what they had submitted, so it's only fair that they had an opportunity to do so. It's time for NationStates Flag Bracket II.

This competition aims to conclusively answer the question: what is the best flag on NationStates? Every day, two flags will be matched against each other to determine which one is the superior flag. Whichever flag gets more votes will win the round and continue onto the next stage of the bracket. The one that has fewer votes is eliminated. Eventually, only the best flags of this site will remain. The submitters of the top 8 flags will receive a legendary trading card as a reward for each flag.

NationStates Flag Bracket I

Rules

Contest Rules:
1. The Flag Bracket is a single-elimination bracket, eliminating flags in each match until reaching the final round, which will determine the best flag on all of NationStates.
2. Submissions close after there are 64 total flags in the competition, and the day after that, the contest will begin.
3. Each match will last a day, but may be extended if there are less than 10 votes. The losing flag will be eliminated from future rounds.
4. If there is a tie, both flags will compete in a three-way match which requires 15 votes to declare a winner.
5. The Top 8 will receive trophies in the form of images that can be placed in factbooks, websites, etc. and special lines to place in the signature. Some may also receive Epic or Legendary trading cards, depending on how many I have at the end of the bracket.

Voting and Discussion Rules:
1. Do not vote more than once.
2. If you have a position of power in a region or organization, you may not require members of that organization to vote for a specific flag or otherwise use privileges of that organization in your campaign.
3. Remember that submitted flags may be different from NS flags - look at the OP or the post announcing the match before you look at NS nations.
4. Drama from other parts of the site is not a good reason to vote against a flag. Please do not derail the thread with your disputes with another player.

Flag Rules:
1. Flags must comply with sitewide rules.
2. You may not submit the flags of real-world nations.
3. Any method of submitting a flag is okay as long as it can be embedded in the OP. This means that the flag must be an image under 1800px wide, on a site that NS allows to be embedded, and in a format that NS supports.
4. If your submitted flag can no longer be accessed, you will be required to reupload it. It is therefore recommended, but not required, that you upload your flag externally, since if you change your flag and this bracket relies on the NationStates upload, you will be required to do so anyway.
5. You may include a description of your flag, describing its meaning, IC and OOC history, and anything else about the flag.
6. There is a limit of 4 flags per *user*. This means that owners of multiple puppets cannot submit more than four puppets' flags.
7. There is a limit of 128 total submissions.
8. If there are more than 8 submissions that are not flags, they will be matched against each other whenever possible, ensuring that a non-flag has representation in the top 8.
9. You may ask to change your flag or its description at any time as long as it has not gone to a vote yet. Note that after the top 64 all submissions are locked in.

Paradeavenlisian States - 3rd
The colour scheme has, perhaps, the most detailed meaning to it. Each colour represents each major native species(and sub species) and region of Paradeavenlisian States(all of which actually have good reasons involving the major habitats and cultures of Paradeavenlisian States.

The blue represents Homo Coelum, Plymnola and the ocean as blue is associated with the sea, which is also what the culture of Homo Coelum is often associated with. One reason why the blue also represents the ocean is because the vast ocean was(along with the storm)what has made Paradeavenlisian States into the truly unique and distinct nation it is today, which also explains why the blue is the biggest colour in the flag.

The green represents Homo Tierra, Belltona and the environment, particularly the vast forests as green is associated with the environment especially forests and Homo Tierra seems to have had the oldest bond with nature out of any native intelligent sentient beings. This is due to the fact that their region, Belltona, has the highest percentage of forest cover of any region. In addition, it also represents the main political party of Paradeavenlisian States: United Green Party.

The yellow represents Homo Paradis, Angelshear, as well as the strong and flexible economy of PS and vast meadows of flowers in Angelshear. The reason why it represents Homo Paradis is because of the vast amount of agriculture they had conducted historically. It also represents the tranquil beaches of Paradeavenlisian States.

The white represents the sub species of Homo Coelum(Homo Coelum Farc in Logreyhiel), Logreyhiel and white-capped mountains and volcanoes dotted across the nation. It, along with the stars in general, represent the extremely long-term peace that has been experienced throughout the archipelago.

The antlers represent the strong bond and coexistence held between the humanoids and other animals for millions of years. In addition, what many people don't seem to know is that the antlers actually also represent the phoenixes(yes, the phoenixes of Paradeavenlisian States have antlers) especially the guardian phoenixes that patrol near the storm.

The yellow outline of the shield represents the storm itself as well as all of the other defenses of Paradeavenlisian States as a whole. The stars themselves actually represent the archipelago of Paradavenlisian States as a whole and shows the stability brought and gifted to the nation as a result of these defenses. The stars also represent the peaceful unification and peaceful coexistence between the people of Paradeavenlisian States and additionally represent the 5 groups of native humanoids: Homo Sapiens, Homo Coelum, Homo Paradis, Homo Tierra and Homo Coelum (although not a seperate humanoid species, they are notably distinct from other Homo Coelum sub-species, especially culturally and morphological characteristic). Another thing that the stars represent is the Stangelic Energy which has had a huge impact on the nation.

Esceanian Union - 4th
The red represents the phoenixes as the co-inhabitants while the blue represents the maritime culture that has been associated with the native Homo Coelum. The white stripe represents the peaceful interactions between the humanoids and the phoenixes. And, lastly, the torches represent prosperity and hope maintained throughout the Esceanian Union.

Paradisia Heavenlonia Stralisia Union - Top 16
The red star represents Stangelic Energy and unity. It also represents the six main elemental phoenixes that roam the archipelago with the exception of the rainbow phoenix which is represented by the white stripes on the star as the creator of them. The white represents the glaciated topped and symbolic Leecona Mountains. The blue represents the vast oceans that lie beyond the archipelago while the green represents the environment.

Paradeavenlisian States - Alternate - Top 32
The white stripes represent the three species and the equality of each of them as well as the ever-lasting peace that has existed and been maintained. The yellow torches represent equality towards all citizens of Paradeavenlisian States as well as the unity over a common goal sought for millennia; a utopia. The blue represents the maritime culture that has existed, particularly around the coastlines of the archipelago. And, of course, the green represents the vast forests that stretch out across the Poiselantican archipelago as well as the coexistence between mankind and mother nature.

Onfande - Top 32
Ever since the Onfandeen Transition Period (2023-2035(yes, pushing back my history)), we have used this flag as a national symbol. The Onfandite flag stands for 4 things: The monarchy, the waters, the nature, and the culture. The reason that we have chosen this flag is because the former flag of Onfande was decided to no longer suit our needs, due to many in the international community saying "it looked like a badge, or a rank (https://i.imgur.com/4FBb5Oz.png)." So, this flag was created in response. It has the same dimensions of the previous flag, but is somewhat more complex. In the center of our banner, is the symbol of the current ruling family in Onfande, who are known as "the best rulers of Onfande" due to how friendly, and incorruptible they are. (excluding an incident that happened in 2033)

On the sides of the flag are a symbol of our diverse culture, with them representing our purity, and nature, but as well as the history of this nation, with much of the red color on the flag representing those who died to bring us glory. As for the main part of the flag, which is blue, it represents our nature as well, mainly the water, due to the majority of our land being on a beautiful island.

Eternia Autonomous Region - Top 128
Eternia is the Florida of Onfande, with crazy people and intense sunshine. Purple is the Region's national color, which is why its used on the flag so much. The purple color represents the seas of Eternia, with its many destinations. The symbol in the center is the national symbol for Eternia, with the most eye-catching symbol being the Sun. Althought it doesn't look like much, the Sun represents 4 things: The history of Eternia prior to its annexation, the agreement between the president of Eternia and the king of Onfande, the beautiful place it is now, and last, the future of this place.

Mountainia Region - Top 64
The Mountainia Region, also commonly called Syalssa by the locals, contains the most mountains in Onfande per-capita. It holds the largest peak of Onfande, Mount Olovye. This mountain is represented in the flag. Syalssa, like Eternia, is a beautiful place. Many times, you can see the Moon rise over the regional hub of Thonossie, which is represented by the star in the topleft canton of the flag.

The Albali Republic - Top 64
The Albali Republic's flag consists of a stylised bird of prey, in the colours in of United Nations. Following the military coup and the end of a major galactic conflict in 2017, the Republic brought new ideals of peace and harmony to the Albalian people, which in my mind is what the UN's colours represent. The bird of prey has its origins in ancient Albalian lore, when an ancient king took a dozen of them for his pets. Since then, raptors have been associated with both power and grace, and has been a common pet for rulers embodying such qualities (and those who don't) ever since those cold, dark days of prehistory.

Fallen Albali - Top 128
Fallen Albali's (or Roulons') flag is something of an oddity in the Albaliverse; the deep red and blue is a combination rarely seen, fitting the unusual conditions for Roulons itself. The traditional raptor has been altered almost beyond recognition, now being symmetrical and missing its head. This was to represent the battered state of Albali, but not to demoralise its citizens - instead, it was designed to unite them in the shared loss of their nation, to make them more angry at the enemy so they they would be winning to fight once more when the time for reclamation had come. The flag of the Republic is also flown above this one, to show that Roulons is still Albalian land.

Catalibla - Top 128
Catalibla is a micronation in the Alps, and a voice of peace and harmony for Europe. The country is no stranger to servitude, having been a member state of the Holy Roman Empire, annexed into the Austro-Hungarian Empire, annexed by Nazi Germany, and later occupied by the French post-WW2. The red and black background comes from the historical flag of Catalibla; a striped flag with a red upper half and a black lower half. The new flag was adopted in 1952, keeping the traditional colours, with a white version of the HRE's Reichsadler in the middle. Catalibla found its origins in the HRE, and white prepresents the purity of its people and the hope for continued peace. In a red shield on the eagle's breast is a stylised edelweiss, a common flower in Catalibla, and one of its national symbols.

The Albalian Kingdom - 1st
The Albalian Kingdom's flag has been the longest-lived of all of Albali's flags, going unaltered for hundreds upon hundreds of years. The origins of the raptor has already been explained for the Republic's flag, so I won't explain it here. Blue and gold have traditionally been symbols of wealth in ancient times; gold because of the actual element of gold which was just as valuable to an alien community as it was for humans. Blue came from having blue clothing, as blue dyes were extremely rare and could only be afforded by the richest of the richest. Despite that no longer being the case, the connotations of associating the colour blue with outrageous wealth continued. A stylised wreath of olive branches sits below the raptor, representing one simple thing: victory. Meanwhile, the crown sitting higher than the stars above the raptor is no coincidence; it represents the power of the monarch - and by extension the state - being greater than that of even the stars themselves. This arrogant attitude had brought war to Albali's doorsteps more than once.

Vidinaz - Star of Discovery - Top 33
The star and the wheel are important icons within Vidinese/Vidkvndan culture. Astrology is a hallowed occupation much the same as clergy, its importance lying in religion and navigation. Their gods were represented by the stars, both far and near, and the people of yore used the stars to determine their location and important events. The wheel symbolize Vidinese civilization itself and its constant march towards the future. Blue symbolize the sea and the void beyond. White symbolize the firmament that protects earthen life from the cold, endless void. Yellow alludes to gold - which then represent the eternal pursuit of Vidinaz's prosperity, and Red represents the sun and the warmth it brought.

In universe, this is the modernized version of the original flag.

Sahyun - Vermilion Sky - Top 64
The Vermillion Sky is colored in the traditional colors of Sahyun, which is red and gold. The four crescent moons and the eight-pointed star in the middle represents the sky and the void beyond, the dominion of Sahyun's god Averro. The landed crested ibis is one of the animals associated with the deity, aside from the fiery phoenix, and represents earned experience and wisdom.

Mondeuta and Lybraesil - Alliance Jack - Top 128
Mondeuta and Lybraesil is an isolationist country, so much so that most people outside their borders often conflate the two, which wasn't helped any by the two nations' alliance. They are represented by the two crests in the middle: the Tower and the ermine Tree. The blues and blacks that surround them allude to the mountains that surround them and the rivers that snake through these peaks. The light grey symbolize Mondeuta's worship of the moon, while green is the same for Lybraesil and their forest spirits.

Fars - Beneficent Trinity - Top 16[region][/region]
Despite being a province of Sahyun, the distance between the two is vast enough to render Fars a nation-state in all but name. As such, their flag were designed by the Farsians themselves, with references to their masters. The crescents and star reference the god the two shared, and in the center is the Sinaean character for 'East', which points to their role as the gate between the western and eastern nations. White represent the sky, blue represent the sea, and green the fertile plains Farsian civilization was built upon.

Bloodshade - 7th
The flag of Bloodshade is a representation of the plight of the Bloodshadian people: A mixture of refugees consisting of humans, elves, dwarfs and vampires who sailed an interstellar ark ship, 'Erebus', in order to find a paradise of their own amidst the stars, after the cataclysmic 'War of Woes' brought about extreme instability to their former homeworld's tectonic plates, enabling it to be plagued by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes until it would eventually blow up, exterminating all life along with its death. Now then, onto the meaning behind the flag which I shall go into detail. The colours and emblem on the flag represent a myriad of meanings:

The light blue is a representation of the perseverance of the Bloodshadian people as they travelled the black null void of space in order to find a place which they can finally call home. Some believe that it signifies the liberation of the people from the shackles of tradition and ancient grudges, joining in a common struggle to finally grant future generations a planet that they can call home, free from hazardous bigotry and xenophobia.
The blood-red aspect is an extremely significant part of the flag as it is supposed to immortalize those whose blood was spilt in the unfortunate 'War of Woes' and in the pursuit of a new home-world, currently named Tejon. The people of Bloodshade are not ones to shy away from conflict because they have everything to lose. Tejon is their home and they refuse to allow anyone to snatch that from them.
The white should represent the purity and innocence of the Bloodshadians as they roamed the galaxy in the hopes of settling down. They were a substantial collection of plucky, desperate survivors that simply wanted another chance at life, hoping that fate would be a merciful mistress for once. At their lowest point, they were finally of one heart and mind.
The 'Vega Eagle', named after the brightest star in Lyra, is supposed to represent the burning sensation in the souls of the Bloodshadians as they soar across the void of space. To them, the 'Vega Eagle' is a sign of hope, courage and regal power. Your typical eagle is known to be able to travel for 255 miles a day during its migration period, showcasing its determination and zeal. Coincidentally, the people have Bloodshade spent many years on the interstellar ark ship known as 'Erebus', neither stopping nor resting until they could settle down in greener pastures.
As for the bundle of arrows, officially, it is supposed to acknowledge the power being wielded the Vega Eagle. Some say it is a or should be a representation of the the militaristic nature of their people but most found this unofficial meaning to be rather traumatic and malicious in nature, considering the 'War of Woes' is still a rather fresh memory. Others claim that the 'three arrows' is a sign of resistance against the ancient ideologies that had resulted in the destruction of the Bloodshadian's original home planet. Those ideologies being ethnic nationalism, communism and absolute monarchism.
Simply put, the thunderbolt is a divine weapon. It is supposed to represent the instantaneous retributive destruction that Bloodshade could wreak upon its rival if its people were angered or wronged. Despite the depressing turn of events due to the 'War of Woes', this has only created stronger men and women that will rabidly protect what they believe is dear to them.

I'd like to make my submissions as below.

This is called the flag for the nation of Libstasia, but is also known as the "forward" flag, with the two red arrows representing the leftist (red) movement taking the country forward, with the SocDem rose being an obvious nod to that as well.

This flag is the flag which is officially paired with the Norcott national anthem, Forever Shall Norcott Rise, and is therefore known as the rising stars flag. The flag symbolises the never-ending growth Norcott shall endure to become the greatest nation on earth.

Description: The colour blue and red on the flag represents heaven and earth, the golden dragon holding 4 jewels made of gold represents the nation's power and wealth, the ying-yang or taijitu symbol represents harmony and balance, the word "孔夫子亜" is the Chinese character transcription of the country's name that was taken from the name of Confucius "孔夫子".
