National People's Party

For Family and Freedom

The National People's Party has been fighting for the families and freedom of all Saint Hildans since 1922. We believe in free markets, traditional values, and the Swedish monarchy. Our cornflower symbolizes conservatism, liberalism, and maintaining personal union with Sweden. We uphold liberty and tradition, not because we were told to do so, but because we choose to do so!

Ideology:
- Liberal conservatism
- Economic liberalism
- Social conservatism
- National conservatism
- Monarchism

The National People's Party (Nationella folkpartiet) is one of the oldest political parties in Saint Hilda. It was founded in 1922 as a merger of the unionist conservative National Party (Nationella partiet) and the unionist right-liberal People's Party (Folkpartiet). The National Party was formed in 1908 by Axel Björklund as a factional split from the Conservative Party, which was monarchist but opposed Saint Hilda's legislative independence and opposed rule by anyone but the governor as representative of the monarch. The People's Party was founded in 1910 by Henrik Johansson to represent the right wing of liberalism as opposed to the social liberalism of the Social Liberal Party. Inspired both by liberals in Sweden and pan-Germanists, the new NPP adopted the cornflower to symbolize conservatism, liberalism, and the desire to remain a legislatively independent colony of Sweden, as well as the merger of its two predecessors.

The NPP almost exclusively appealed to white Swedish-speaking members of the Church of Sweden, competing with the Conservative Party for votes as the Conservatives' focus shifted from royal rule to white supremacy and anti-Catholicism. However, the NPP eventually started gaining a broader base of support from Afro-Hildans, Catholics, & free church members as Saint Hilda expanded the franchise to more of its population, being much more flexible than the Conservatives on the issues of racial equality and religious tolerance. The Conservative Party failed to adapt to a broader electorate and eventually became unable to win any seats, with former Conservatives who were on the left of the party coming to support the NPP. Though the NPP is a multiracial and multiethnic party, a majority of its supporters are still white Swedish-speaking members of the Church of Sweden.

The NPP was a broad church of monarchist traditionalist conservatives and right-wing liberals who wanted to maintain union with Sweden, but during the '70s, the NPP's leadership became increasingly conservative on social issues, especially concerning homosexuality. That alienated the more moderate liberals on the left wing of party, who eventually left the NPP in 1976 to found the Radical Party (Radikala partiet), which rapidly grew in size and eventually merged into the Social Liberal Party in 1988 to form SLP:The Radicals.

After the the party split, the NPP started becoming less hostile to the idea of independence from Sweden over time. It was originally unheard of for members of the NPP to support diplomatic independence for Saint Hilda, but the party's base became more and more favorable toward the idea until 1993, when NPP Leader Lars Björklund first held a forum on the question of independence, as around 30% of the base supported diplomatic independence. The NPP membership is still split on independence, with roughly 60% favoring independence and roughly 30% being against it, but almost everyone in the party supports keeping the monarchy, regardless of their views on independence.

I would like to congratulate our partner, the Capitalist Party, in our new electoral alliance, Freedom Union (Frihetsunionen). We at the National People's Party look forward to working with our esteemed colleagues in this new partnership!

One amendment from one (admittedly high-ranking) member does not an entire party make. KP has no official stance regarding the monarchy presently. If KP was explicitly against the monarchy, there would be no electoral alliance. You are mistaken if you believe that the issue was not brought up in joint discussions between the NPP and KP.

Even if KP was opposed to the monarchy, PLP and Republic, two parties diametrically opposed to each other on the same issue, have agreed to work together. The NPP would not go as far as that, but there is precedent.

We could always use getting out there more, though we should be thankful we were easily the party with the most active members in Arch's last diagram.
