The Cosmic Mainframe invented the technology for travel between universes nine years ago. At the moment it's highly unreliable, often arriving at a time as much as a year different from the time at which they are intended to arrive. This works both ways; it is expected that anyone or anything sent into another universe could return far later than expected, or sometimes before they are actually sent.

(Worth noting that I made this whole thing up so it makes sense for me to RP with other nations that claim Earth or part of it.)

The official demonym of Mann and Eyre is unrelated to the nation’s name. The singular noun, Theder, is from the Proto-Germanic word þeudō (meaning "people" or "tribe") and the suffix -er, denoting a resident or inhabitant of a place. The plural noun form is Theden, of which origin the ending consonant is unknown. The suffix of the adjectival form (Thedish) is from Proto-Germanic -iskaz, which forms adjectives from nouns with the sense of 'pertaining to, characteristic of'.

Theden tend to feel disappointed when referred to as either Mannians, Eyreans or any variation thereof by foreigners.

New Spiedska: While threatening war over homosexuality seems more fitting for the Middle Ages than the 19th Century, even if views on the matter at the time weren't quite liberal, I suppose New Spiedska's being populated by non-humans played more of a role in those tensions - which makes me wonder how the French were so accepting to a non-human civilisation. I see an opportunity for a joke here, but I won't make it because I actually like France.

Nacrad: Biblically-inspired names can be pretty cool.

Since I am currently afflicted with the dreaded curse of writer's block, here's something more or less copy-pasted from my factbooks regarding the integration of conquered subjects into Khoronzon's non-citizen slave caste:

The process of integrating subjugated peoples into thralldom is known as Helot Conversion. A predetermined section of the surviving population of an area under Khoronzonite military occupation, based on available space, potential resource consumption, and need for additional labour, is designated as prospective Helots, while the remainder is killed on an industrial scale, typically to either be reprocessed as food or used to feed maggot farms. These prospects are then subjected to extensive mass psychotherapy, designed to erode their cognitive capacities and emotions, reducing them to mentally impaired servility. Prospects who display exceptional resistance may be singled out and given specialised treatment, with the end result being the same. Once they are all fully processed, the new Helots are transported to a Thrall Habitation Zone, to live out their lives in complete servitude. Among the 195 nations of the world, Icadias is most prominent for several reasons being:

• The only country with the Head of Government known as a Lord or Lady of the Elite Council, Icadias's legislative body.
• The only country where the Lord or Lady of the Elite Council is lawfully bestowed in simultaneously holding the position of Councillor of Foreign and Internal Affairs and Councillor of Defence.
• The only country where a royal once held an administrative position in the government whilst not being a sovereign at the same time.

Concentrating power in the hands of a smaller group of people is bad and this head of government shouldn’t be granted the councillorships of defence and foreign affairs. That’s an idiotic move IMO.

Though Theden are usually polite and courteous, there exists rampant xenophobia held by many Theden towards certain cultures or peoples, particularly imperialistic and barbaric ones. This ties in with the wider strongly independent and nationalistic sentiment that is deeply entrenched in the national ethos.

Examples of those who experience varying levels of xenophobia are non-Muʿtazilite Muslims, Christian fundamentalists, Russians, Americans, Germans, Hungarians, Britons, French, Spaniards and Turks. Almost all cultures experience this xenophobia depending on how "dangerous" they are viewed or how much they’re looked down upon.

Lanagard's unusualness probably resides in its languages.

• While English, French and Russian are the three "national" languages, other minority languages have been guaranteed constitutional rights for over two centuries, making Lanagard a haven for persecuted linguistic minorities. They just remain very alive and Lanagard is a strongly multilingual society.
• Russian was not a national language at first, and when it was added in 1938, it was only the sixth most spoken language in Lanagard (after English, French, Japanese, Spanish and Occitan). Theden are strongly nationalistic and ferociously opposed to foreign rule. Both world governments and foreign conquerors would find no sympathisers amongst the Theden and would in fact be targeted by a zealous army of terrorists should they attempt to wrestle freedom out of the hands of the Theden nation. Historically there was some geographic distribution (French-speakers were located near the East coast, English-speakers in the West, ...) although it wasn't exactly clear-cut. Linguistic diversity was strongly valued by the original rebels (mostly Francophones, though Hispanophones and some Anglophones took part as well) who broke free from the British Empire, and is what contributed to the large population of Occitans in Lanagard (since they fled linguistic persecution in France). All children who speak one of the recognized minority languages receive education (at least up to secondary education level) in one of their native languages (among a certain constitutionally-recognized list of recognized minority languages, less than 0.2% of the population speaks none of these natively (mostly first-generation immigrants), and the list is updated if a minority group increases in relevance), and learn two to three additional official minority languages at school - including (if they do not speak any natively) at least one of the three national languages. The main privilege that national languages have is in higher education (where minority languages are not always available due to lack of material) and the fact that at least one has to be learned by all, which was used to promote Russian language education. However, all laws and official announcements are translated into all official languages (therefore including the three national languages, and all recognized minority languages).

Although it is located in the South Pacific, Western Fardelshufflestein has "Western" in its name because, when the Fardelshufflesteinians left their homeland in the Holy Roman Empire behind, they thought they were in the West Indies. It was not until the 1800's that they realized they were closer to Australia than North America. It was decided not to remove the "Western" because they had been a sovereign nation for nearly two centuries at that point and were, honestly, too lazy to change the country's name.
