"Sure I had mentioned my medic work with a few mobs. But I once was a body guard for some royal chick, all I remember was hitching a ride on the roof of a police car to catch some kidnappers. She had a really bad problem with that.

"Well, I'd love to know this mafia so maybe Fernando and I could reunite our old freelance police duo, but in all sincerity, ever since the act passed a couple of years ago, freelance policing had been outlawed. Besides, we don't really feel like busting up bad guys anyways these days."

I don’t think I’ve heard of that kind of torture before. I’ve heard of others though! But let’s not talk about bad stuff like that!”

"Well, it's not really a torture torture. Or, it sorta is... Imagine if there was something you really, really wanted dangling above you but you just couldn't reach it. Now imagine if I was you and that something was a piece of that sweet nina's juicy-" Jose explained before being cut off rudely by Fernando.

"Hold on there, Jose. Don't get into deep territory like that." Fernando reminded him.

Jose sighed in arousal-frustration. "Dios mio, you're right. I shouldn't really be talking about perverted high school dreams like that infront of guests. Oh, actually, there was this story from the crepe stand involving a disturbed criminal, a flock of seagulls and my autistic niece, which might be a little bit less dirty."

”That’s kind of sad! I worry when people are like that. I still love them! But it means they have to hurt other people a lot of the time to be happy so it makes me less happy and it’s kind of bad a lot of the time!”

She then answered Jose. ”Don’t worry! I know that feeling! I love everyone! But not everyone loves me! So a lot of the time I can’t really what I want with people. It got really bad a while ago! But I’m fine now! I don’t have many adventure stories that I actually was in! I do have stories with other people though! They can be a bit sad or bad sometimes though! But you should tell me your story first!”

"Well, I have a niece who has high functioning autism, si? She's about 11 years old, and wayyyy into that old Earth series My Little Pony that her grandmother showed her. She idolizes one of the characters on the show, that being a 'Fluttershy', which honestly sounds like a brand of electric roller blinds, and she apparently loves animals, and therefore my niece also loves animals, which makes her really good with my two Chihuahuas.

Anyways, we're operating a crepe joint down in a good-old fashioned long street in Santa Clara in Nueva Cuba, getting some good old fashioned business in. She notices Fernando and I working as merchants and talks to us for a bit as she's giving food to all these seagulls, which, by the way, there were ALOT of seagulls. So many, infact, that they made the modern Castillan Army look like a kindergarten playgroup!

Anyways, she buys some of our crepes which she mostly gives to the birds, when all of the sudden a fat, hairy guy in a black suit shows up and starts yelling at a Volano clerk in the burger stand across, si? And my niece, this dashing young animal girl, sees this event, and also finds that his buttcrack is conveniently exposed to an extent. So with DC Comics-proportions of luck and accuracy, she tosses the crumbs into his tailpipe and before you know it, a bunch of seabirds are diving into his pants like kamikaze pilots, and he's just running around screaming "DIOS MIO! THERE ARE BIRDS IN MY PANTS!"" Jose and Fernando would laugh extremely hardly, Fernando coughing from it all.

"There were some glorious times to be had, even when we were out of commission. It's like God put us here for a reason, and whenever we got bored or uncertain, something crazy happens and we're like 'Fuck this, I'm going to live to see the day I get to tell this to my grandkids or otherwise!'" Fernando quoted.

Gikochinai smiled and listened intently to the story. She was reminded that animals could be loved, and thus immediately recalled past occasions where she’d experienced just that. Animals were an odd thing for Gikochinai- she loved them sometimes, but not other times, depending on whether it was brought up or not. And when she did, it was the same kind of love for she felt for humans, or any other people. Even children, as she was once again reminded, though that was a constant for her.

She knew of giving food to seagulls, though didn’t do it very much herself. She wasn’t usually living in coastal areas. She preferred the cold and the mountainous. But it wasn’t like she hated them. She just rarely got to visit such places. Certainly rarely coastal trade towns- her old home didn’t really have any trade towns. Gikochinai recalled the times she had given food to the birds. Once alone, happy and frolicking. Once beside a blue-haired girl with a naval uniform, who was recovering from crying, explaining how she loved the ocean.

She’d never thrown crumbs at people to use the birds as weapons though. She’d heard of the idea, but never actually witnessed it, even in animated form. It wasn’t the sort of thing people anywhere she’d lived did. They were either too busy, too loyal, too afraid or too friendly to do that sort of thing in front of her.

She didn’t laugh with them, but she did smile. To her it just wasn’t that funny. She didn’t really find suffering of people as funny as a lot of people seemed to. Gikochinai did have some crazy stories...with crazy being the important word. And not just crazy in the sense of being weird. But crazy in the sense of madness, insanity and almost impossible violence too. She didn’t want to tell stories like that, though. She wanted to tell happy stories.

Gikochinai turned to reply to Kairi- accidentally hitting her head because of how close she was. ”Oops! Sorry! I was just born in the normal way!”

"Well,A few years ago, Fernando and I went to work as interns in this big traditional Filipino food joint in the Nueva Filipinas as part of a private investigation task during our big days. It was kind of a hip, artsy place, and tried to cater to a progressive crowd. This wasn't an especially progressive town, though, and we had as many of the same old religious nuts and espuelaos come in as every other place.

"There were all kinds of ridiculous customers, but the ones we all really hated were the after-church crowd. They did nothing for business, because the place would have been busy anyway. Most of them were people who only went out to eat after church and who seemed mystified by the whole experience. Special orders, complaints over nothing, lousy/nonexistent tips, taking forever to leave even when there is obviously a line of customers. Usually, if I was on a Sunday shift, the rest of the workers would talk crap in the back kitchen, call them 'satanists', 'Jewish ploys', 'fuckpuppets', all that.

"At one point, the local city council was considering a 'controversial' bill to address housing discrimination against LGBT peoples and, of course, Volano aliens and mulatto black people, to match up with the rest of the massive Jim Crow going on, but one busy Sunday during this time while we were totally slammed, one individual, a Volana girl, came up to the front counter and pulled our owner/chef (my boss) away from the kitchen, who was usually always ready to talk to a customer and be friendly. The guy asked my boss if we were a 'Christian-friendly' establishment. Then my boss, who had three minutes earlier been in the back talking about all the 'f***ing water-drinking Jesus f***s,' said, 'Of course, sir, we're friendly to everyone!' The man then said, 'So you don't employ or serve Sodomites?' It took the boss a second to figure out what the hell the guy was talking about. When he did, he had had about enough. He leaned over, kissed one of the male line cooks on the cheek, and said, 'We're all Sodomites! Would you like to see a dessert menu, or do you just want the check?'" Jose chuckled at this story

Gikochinai wasn’t too familiar with some of the terminology used. The word “progressive” had only recently had any meaning to her- her old home had been a tyranny, a place where terms like that weren’t used at all. Certainly not in its later era. She wasn’t very familiar with religion beyond the one she’d been a goddess in. That one hadn’t cared about race or gender or anything like that. It had cared only about obedience. Totally, undying, eternal devotion.

She wasn’t very familiar, then, with how churches affected business and stuff like that. She’d never even seen a church. Her nation had never had them. Even in the more religious era, there wasn’t so much churches as temples and training bases, and there hadn’t been any business to disrupt as a result. Everything was done in the name of their supreme deity. She was familiar with things like special orders, but mostly from the side of people ordering them. Even if she wore a maid uniform, she wasn’t really a trained preparer of food.

As for the insults, she didn’t really know any of them but the last. She knew the second was a reference of a religion, but nothing more. The last one, though, had a bit more of a personal impact. It reminded her of how the word “plaything” had been used so often in that last era she’d rather leave behind. That’s what most people had been. Things to be used for whatever a superior wanted. War. Experiments. Torment. Ritual. Joy. To be killed, to be used, to be commanded. It hurt a little to think of all that again.

She didn’t even know what sodomy meant. So, naturally, the punchline was completely lost on Gikochinai. She smiled- her smile having faded for a moment before- but once more didn’t laugh. She just didn’t understand it enough to appreciate the humour.

A lot of mine are a bit bad as well...they can be a bit scary and stuff! Because a lot of stuff ended badly! Actually, maybe I shouldn’t try to be funny! I don’t think it’ll go well!”

"I'm a female by the way, and I do expect it but you seem to have gotten an easy out." Her tail wags "Lucky you!"

Akas cheered. "He's gone, yes!" She then sat back down.

May gave her an ear to ear smile, baring her fangs. "It's alright, Giko. I guess... do you know any puns?" She sat down, wondering if Giko had one of her own. It was an odd skill to be funny, one that many people did not have. She wanted Giko to possibly be one of those few.

Alot of paleontologists lost their lives that day." Jose said as he bowed his head down. ”I never really went adventuring much! That was more Aozora’s job! She had to go to other places a lot! Usually to kill things though. I’m not good at that! So I didn’t really come along very much! So all I really have is stories! Sad stories! And kind of bad ones! I think most of my stories aren’t very happy, so I don’t like telling them much! They aren’t very funny either usually! To me, anyway!”

"¿De dónde van los gatos cuando mueren? Purgatorio." He chuckled. "It means 'Where do cats go when they die? Purrgatory.'"

Gikochinai quickly turned to answer May. She’d been so caught up in her thoughts she’d forgotten to reply! ”Sorry! Umm, let me think...I mostly speak Japanese, so I don’t know how well stuff like that translates! People where I’m from didn’t really use them very much! It was a pretty serious place! Honestly, most of the funny stuff was from how serious people were about kind of funny things! Like the time we tried to use sea cucumbers as a propaganda weapon! That was fun! And it even worked! Kind of just sounds weird now though!”

She returned her attention, for a moment, to Jose. ”I think the happiest story of my life is how I am able to be here today! Because for a while things got really bad but I now I undestand that and can be truly happy again!”

May laughed. "To be honest with you, we were forced to be funny, to put up a farce until about 15 years ago. We also have less gigantic experiments ruining everything now. We're not guinea pigs anymore... alright, the government uses us from time to time, but they do experimental trials on other animals, so that we aren't killed by an injection of the wrong substance. We've also been dabbling in magic to heal, but that hasn't gone to well... the point is, I guess you can find funny anywhere." She closed her mouth.

”Oh! Magic! You have to be really careful with that! My old nation used it for lots of things! I...think I can trust you enough to say names, right? I hope so! They used lots of people as test subjects! It was really bad! I didn’t know that though! Naosu really liked testing things on people! She was good at healing! She helped me all the time! But she mostly made diseases and stuff! And later on, she got really bad! She wanted everything to be perfect and kind of...killed, a lot of people, who weren’t good enough. She was a goddess like me. Maybe she still is...anyway! I hope you’re not used too much now! I think it’d bad if you have to let people do that to you!”

May nodded. "Well, when you've been in the army since... what, 1984? It's hard to be underused. They wanted to test their stuff on vampires, and me, being the second vampire to enter the service, I was used for a whole host of things. On my old skin, there were needle scars all over my hands, arms, and feet. It's primarily the reason why I wore gloves... before, as a deterrent from people seeing. How do you think I can shapeshift? They tortured me with years of chemicals, and substances, until I could finally do what they wanted me to." She clenched her fist, and bit in her mouth. "They. Didn't. Live. Long."

”Wow! That sounds horrible! I was never used for stuff like that. I was a ruler and a kind of important person! So I mainly did propaganda and stuff like that! I hope you’re ok now! It’s sad what happened to you! But I hope I can help make you happier!”

She then turned to face Carlos. She was reminded of the gruesome sight that day, and winced. ”I...guess so. Things got really bad for my friends and me over time. I didn’t even notice! I was...happy. We all went as far we wanted! Even me! It’s...over now!”

She grew a single tear in her left hand. She lifted Gikochinai up, and gave her a little kiss on the cheek. "Oh, Giko. You make me feel better, you make me feel... good, again. Someone who deserves to live on this earth and share in the bounty. I'll never be the woman I once was, but you're helping me be better.
