BREAKING NEWS: In Brief: Krishnan Joins Kahn in By-Election Blitz| Ferdinand Gubernatorial By-Election
Jon Lime, Fernão News Network | June 6 2017

President Krishnan campaigning in Ferdinand

- (Ferdinand, Fernão) President Priscilla Krishnan today joined her party's nominee, Shazeen Kahn in a campaigning blitz around the state.

Aboard the battle bus now synoymous with the Kahn campaign, Krishnan addressed supporters at a number of locations warning of the perceived threat Glauco Clemente Machado, the Phalanx nominee, would have on Fernaoese democracy.

"I was honoured to be elected as this nation's President, and it is my duty to come out here to defend the democracy that got me to where I am today. Never again can we allow a tyrant to rule over these shores, so please, join me in voting for Shazeen Kahn as the next governor of this great state!"

Kahn is expected to be joined by Senate Majority Leader, Indira Tamboli in the coming days during the campaign.

Glauco Clemente Machado, FPM candidate for Governor of Ferdinand, continues his campaign today by making a number of appearances to meet voters, as scheduled on his website and distributed pamphlets. Machado appears unfazed by the latest poll in which he is almost twenty points behind Civic Union candidate Shazeen Khan. Machado said, when asked, that polls are not everything, and that as long as his voters were passionately vigourous in getting out the vote, there was no reason to think the election was a lost cause. Speaking of which, a number of campaign volunteers, particularly from the Vanguardists, have signed up on Machado's campaign website offering their vehicles to transport voters to and from the booths. Any potential voters are able to sign up with their address, and campaign volunteers in the area will be directed to help them on election day.

Advertisements have also been placed in state radio, television and newspaper networks, criticizing the campaign of competitor Shazeen Khan. The advertisements ask "How can Machado be a threat to democracy when Civic Union voters don't know what they are voting for?". The advertisements point to the numerous places where one can read up on Machado's policies and promises, especially his website. By comparison, the advertisements say, Shazeen Khan has run a campaign based almost entirely on trying to scare voters away from the Fernão Phalanx Movement. Machado himself appears in the advertisements, asking "Who knows what Ferdinand will get if Khan is elected Governor? Does Shazeen Khan know?".

The advertisements are, notably, the most negative part of Machado's campaign by far. Up until now, his campaign has run mostly on policy and canvassing himself, but being called a "threat to democracy" by the Civic Union, Machado has started to fire back. Machado, when asked, had no statement about the reportedly fake news released about competitor Shazeen Khan.

A rather plump man takes to the podium in the lightly populated — mostly with press — lobby at the Ferdinand Elections Commission Office. He clears his throat, then speaks:

"I, Marcos Laferriere, as Chief Electoral Commissioner for the State of Ferdinand, having received all reports from the precincts throughout the state, hereby certify that the election results were as follows.

"6,781,325 votes were cast. Turnout was 87.16%. The total number of votes cast for Governor of Ferdinand for each candidate are as follows:
Benjamin Achleitner, Union of Anabaptists: 183,016 votes.
João Cândido Moura Fernandes, independent: 140,310 votes.
Shazeen Khan, Civic Union: 3,973,630 votes.
Glauco Clemente Machado, Fernão Phalanx Movement: 2,484,369 votes.

And I certify that Shazeen Khan, Civic Union, has been duly elected to serve as Governor of Ferdinand."

In a few short minutes Shim Seo-yeon, the former Secretary of Public Works, had arranged for a small press conference outside of the Senate chamber and had informed nearby members of the national and international press that she would be making important revelations about one of the prospective candidates for the President's cabinet. Of course the politician understood that the President and her cronies were using this as an attempt to distract from the debate, but she was confident that her fellow colleagues inside the Senate could manage to keep the debate on track and she felt that the wider population had a right to know the political past of the government's allies.

“Comrades,

In the process of debating the three candidates put forward by this government it has come to my attention that Arslan Shapur, the government's current candidate to lead the Department of Public Works, directly profited from the previous CIA-backed dictatorship, and before turning against the government was an ardent supporter of the regime because he believed that it would implement Pinochet-style reforms.

It is incredibly disturbing that Mister Shapur continues to support Pinarchism, an ideology practised by the authoritarian regime of Augusto Pinochet, an individual that violently suppressed democratic movements and trade unionism by torturing and murdering tens of thousands of innocent civilians.

If President Krishnan wishes to be taken seriously as a leader with the best interests of Fernao at heart, she must immediately withdraw Arslan Sharpur’s name from the current nomination process and put forward another candidate to lead the Department of Public Works. The government of Fernao should be known for more than just the spoils system and cronyism, and even though I am a member of the opposition, I still intend to see this country be led by qualified, competent individuals. It remains abundantly clear that Mr. Sharpur is not that person.

Questions to Arslan Shapur from Senate confirmation hearing

House of Judah wrote:"Mister President, if you will allow, I would like to hear from Mister Shapur concerning his vision for Public Works, particularly as it relates to his well documented views in favor of privatization. Public works, being what they are, include numerous vital public services and infrastructure. Is Mister Shapur ready at this time to commit to not privatizing vital services such as water, power, sewage and roads?"

Tectonix wrote:"Mr. President, if I may, I'd like to add 'internet access' to the list of non-privatised services."

Malgrave wrote:After listening to her colleagues Shim Seo-yeon rose to speak.

"Mister Speaker, I share similar concerns about the nomination of Arslan Shapur to the position of Secretary of Public Works, and join my esteemed colleague in asking that the nominee clarify their position on the privatisation of the utilities that they listed. In addition I would also like to raise questions about Mister Shapur's support for the previous CIA-backed dictatorship, namely the profits that he gained from his construction business during this time period.

Lastly I would like to remind everyone that as Secretary of Public Workers I created two items of legislation relating to the infrastructure and housing needs of this country, and I ask Mister Shapur if he is willing to support the Fernoan Electrical Infrastructure Act and the Fernoan Affordable Housing Act"

"Honorable Senators, yes I will say on the record that I am in favor of privatizing many government services as I believe it will improve those services. That however is a process that can't happen overnight and doing it without a plan. While I would support such privatizing measures personally, we are still a nation recovering from a civil war. Our infrastructure is in shambles in many places and our private industry is not at a level currently where I would feel the government can turnover such services. Once the repairs are done, I would seek to privatize non-vital services provided by the government. What those non-vital services will be I can not tell at the moment as I would first need to review all of the public works department.

As to the honorable senator's question about internet access, I am not aware to our nation providing free internet access at the moment and is only private. The honorable senator would first have to propose a bill guaranteeing the right to internet access unless I am mistaken and there is such a law.

To the honorable senator's question about profits gained while I was at Tarheel Construction, if you would like a investigation done into our profits during my tenure as head but I am not sure those records still exist. As you should see in my records, the Tarheel construction company was bombed by a left wing paramilitary group in 1997 along with most of its records. The company no longer exists. I swear to the Senate that under my tenure, Tarheel construction did all of its work within the law and to continue to the other part of your question Senator, it will be my job to carry out any bills passed by this body relating to the department of public works. Whether I support it or not, I will follow the will of this legislative body and the people of Fernão."

Malgrave wrote:"Mister President, since it has been revealed that the nominee for the Secretary of Public Works directly profited from the CIA-backed dictatorship and continues to support an ideology that brought untold misery to millions of people in this country and Chile I implore the government to select another candidate for this position."

"Senator, I ran a construction company. I had no direct dealings with the government other than local infrastructure contracts and even those first went to the ownership group. The only way I profited from the government was that they paid the company to build infrastructure and that eventually went to my salary and all of the workers salaries. Senator, you also seem to have a misunderstanding on what Pinarchism is. Pinarchists do not support the killing of anyone purely based on their ideology. It is primarily a economic ideology that involves privatization, free trade, tight regulation of banks, and government intervention in the economy only to stop monopolies. I do not support the killings of 3000 and torture of around 30,000 under the Chilean Junta nor under Pinochet's presidency nor the actions taken by the former dictator of Fernão."

Socialist Nordia wrote:Mr. President, it has come to my attention that Arslan Shapur was a documented sympathiser of Fernão's imperialist-backed dictatorship, and supposedly sees the mass murderer Pinochet as an inspiration of his. My question is, does Arslan Shapur have respect for democracy, or does he continue to endorse the extrajudicial killing of leftists?

"Honorable senator, as I said before, I do not support the killings and I do not advocate for the military to coup the president. I might remind the senator that the legislator of Chile did in fact invite the military to take the country citing the former president Allende as having breached the constitution and he repeatedly refused to resign from office. Pinochet was one of the last leaders to join the coup as he was reluctant to take part and only became head of the junta because he was head the most powerful Chilean branch of military the army. I respect Pinochet because he turned Chile from a economic mess under Allende with 140% inflation to the economic powerhouse of Latin America it is today with free trade reforms. I will reiterate I do not support the killings committed by Chilean government during the 70's and 80's nor do I currently support a coup today. My support for the former dictatorship of Fernão while real at the time no longer exists. They did not institute the economic polices needed to improve Fernão and their murder of opposition groups did nothing for Fernão. I saw both my brother and father shot dead by a paramilitary group when I was young. No other child should have to see that in Fernão whether under a right or left wing government. So yes senator, I do have respect for democracy and its ability to let voices be heard without killing."

It is supposed to be the confirmation hearing where senators field questions to the candidate. I would have put it in the chamber had the vote not already started

BREAKING NEWS: Senate rejects controversial Krishnan nominees
Wake Snapper, Fernão News Network | June 9 2017

Image
The defeated nominees: Arslan Shapur (left) for Public Works and Patricio Magrina (right) for Health and Labour

- (Fortaleza, Fernão) The Senate has rejected two of the President's nominees in a shocking blow to the Krishnan Administration. Dr. Emily Ndereba, the noncontroversial nominee for Finance and Economic Development, easily cruised through confirmation, with only the Communist Party, the Union of Anabaptists, and the Fernão Phalanx Movement voting against. Before the vote, most of the attention inside and outside of the Senate Chamber had been focused solely on Arslan Shapur, the nominee for Public Works. Shapur created controversy due to his support for privatization and deregulation, adherence to the ideology of 'Pinarchism', in reference to the economic policies of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, and supposed former support for Amir Soetoro, the dictator who ruled Fernão for over three decades. However, when voting began, Shapur was not the only one to be defeated. Patricio Magrina, the nominee for Health and Labour, was expected to be confirmed fairly easily, especially with the opposition's attention focused at Shapur. However, Magrina was defeated by the same margin as Shapur: two votes.

Patricio Magrina may not have been as controversial as Arslan Shapur, but his neoliberal economic views were too the source of his defeat. Though Magrina's views on most issues remain unknown, due to his refusal to answer any questions, setting him aside from the other nominees, his adherence to neoliberalism led to strong opposition from the General Union of Workers and most other unions. The confirmation votes for Shapur and Magrina were seen as a test of the Coalition of Workers and Farmers' loyalty to the Civic Union, due the natural conflicts between a self-proclaimed populist party and Cabinet nominees set on deregulation and privatization. However, the Coalition mostly stuck with the President, with all but one Senator voting for (Sílvio da Costa Oliveira abstained, but his vote was disqualified). The Humanist Union and Forward Fernão ! also stuck to the party line. The nominees were defeated nonetheless, due to strong opposition from the Red-Green Alliance and the Communist Party, with not a single member of the opposition voting for either.

The rejection of the two nominees is a victory for new Senate Minority Leader Nisha Gadhavi, who replaced the retiring David Bloom recently. As much as it is a victory for Gadhavi and the RGA, though, it is more of a defeat for Senate Majority Leader Indira Tamboli and the Civic Union. The Majority Leader was already on thin ice with President Krishnan, and this latest defeat could spell the end for Tamboli. There are still several remaining Cabinet nominees that the Senate is set to vote on, though none are expected to be as controversial.

UPDATE: President Krishnan has renominated both unsuccessful nominees. More on this coming up.

BREAKING NEWS: Bloom and Kassem campaign throughout Sarkar
Wake Snapper, Fernão News Network | June 13 2017

Image
David Bloom (right) and Reza Kassem (left) on their way to a rally in Khan, Sarkar

- (Miliband, Fernão) David Bloom, candidate for Governor of Sarkar, and Reza Kassem, candidate for Sarkar's 2nd district, are currently engaging in a joint whistle-stop tour across eastern Sarkar. Both candidates are members of the Red-Green Alliance and Bloom previously held Kassem's current seat. After Bloom's resignation to prepare for a run for Governor, Kassem, Bloom's former Chief of Staff and Mayor of Miliband, was elected in the subsequent by-election by a surprisingly large margin. Bloom and Kassem are close allies in the social democratic wing of the RGA, and both have endorsed one another in their respective races.

Both Bloom and Kassem have so far run populist campaigns. Kassem has made a point of criticizing Michael Ferreira, his CTA opponent, for his votes in favor of the failed nominees for Public Works and Health and Labour, Arslan Shapur and Patricio Magrina. At a rally in Miliband, Kassem stated, "Michael Ferreira claims to stand for workers and farmers, but he has voted again and again for neoliberal nominees who would privatize public services and weaken unions and labor rights! The people of SA-2 deserve a Senator who will stand up to Priscilla Krishnan's neoliberal agenda of deregulation and privatization! The people of SA-2 deserve better than Michael Ferreira!"

Bloom currently leads, while Kassem trails, in the polls, but a significant amount of Sarkar voters remain undecided, meaning both races could go either way.

TV AD for Samuel Bencoster

Senator Veas wants the government to choose where you work, what you eat, and where you live.

You could end up with a job that leaves you with no money.
Image

Because you share food with everyone you could end up hungry.
Image

Because you have to live where they tell you, you could end up in a dirty home that is not suitable for life.
Image

Don't let Senator Veas and his rich friends steal all that you love.
Image

Vote for Samuel Bencoster, giving everyone their fair shot.

Gala of the Fortaleza Chamber of Commerce
Hyatt Regency Fortaleza

A six-foot tall man, his blonde hair neatly parted in a combover and wearing a dark navy blue suit with faux-alligator shoes, stood at the podium as hundreds of businessmen, celebrities, local officials and other movers and shakers in the nation's capital gathered inside the grand ballroom of the hotel. At the back of the room were the cameras of various news organisations, all focused on the curious character on the stage: Nick Haverkamp, the Civic Union's candidate for mayor.

With the last guests quickly settling into their tables, the booming voice of the announcer, an Indian man from the sounds of it, filled the room. "May I have your attention please. Please give a warm welcome to businessman and mayoral candidate Nick Haverkamp."

His accent betraying his childhood in the Netherlands, he began speaking.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," he said while hissing the s's and dropping the g's.

"Growing up in a poor part of Amsterdam, I have seen first-hand the effects of when we do not empower the people to achieve their potential. Gangs, drugs, crime, you name it, it was all there. Because the authorities had not cared for the people, the people did not have respect for the authorities. It was a tense place."

He paused to take a sip of his bottle of mineral water.

"In many ways, I believe that that is the problem facing Fortaleza today. As the largest city and economic, cultural and political capital in our young nation, Fortaleza must be the guiding beacon of light for the nation as a whole. Modern infrastructure, attractive policies for investment, and stable institutions are a must in Fernao's model city. As goes Fortaleza, so will go the nation."

"However, much like the working-class areas of Amsterdam, the authorities have not paid the appropriate attention to the city, and we are all paying the price. The municipal government remains in the chokehold of the Fernoan Capital Act, an unconstitutional travesty which allows the federal government to override our decisions on a whim, while we remain beset by a lack of stable, functioning institutions for the protection of our civil and property rights."

Polite applause rung out from the hall.

"My administration will immediately move to establish an investment fund to stabilise the city's finances and create a streamlined process for incorporating and organising businesses in order to make Fortaleza competitive on the global stage."

More applause.

"Furthermore, I will push my pro-growth, pro-federalism colleagues in the Senate to immediately repeal the constricting and blatantly illegal Fernoan Capital Act and unlock federal funding for the development of Fortaleza's infrastructure in conjunction with the private sector. Our city will no longer be held hostage by the grinding, inefficient ways of the gridlocked federal government, which is yet to even confirm the Cabinet halfway into their terms."

Applause once again followed, this time noticeably louder and more enthusiastic. Free money sounded pretty good to the businessmen in the room.

"Of course, even while looking ahead, we cannot forget the plight of the poor and the struggling in our city, who have been let down by the inability of the federal government to develop a stable safety net. I believe that the municipal government has an obligation to guarantee their property rights by granting them deeds to their land, even if the actual origins of the property's ownership are lost to history, and to provide them with the necessities of life through the establishment of soup kitchens and public housing."

Once again, applause, but considerably less enthusiastic.

"Fortaleza is a beautiful city, and we must unlock its potential, if not for ourselves then for our posterity. Together, we can build a global city of the twenty-first century, prosperous and open to the world. Thank you and good night."

As he walked off the stage, the dark-suited men and dress-clad women in the room gave him a standing ovation.

Fernão Phalanx Movement on the Blitz
Leonardo Águas, Fernão Zenith | June 14th, 2017

Cristovao Matos at small campaign event, South-Central Ferdinand

- Today throughout Fernão but particularly in the state of Ferdinand, the Fernão Phalanx Movement, FPM, has kicked several campaigns into gear for the coming electoral cycle. The FPM has notable candidates running for the FD-3 Senatorial Electorate and the mayoralty of Fortaleza, the national capital. The party is also campaigning hard to prevent a Leave vote from Mococa which is holding an independence referendum during the election.

The party's leader, Cristovao Matos, is running for an electoral seat in the Senate in southern Ferdinand, the region the party enjoys the strongest support in. This is evidenced by the fact that the nationally minor party's candidate is currently polling nearly 50% of the vote. Matos today traveled around the constituency, joined by popular party member Glauco Clemente Machado, who recently ran a surprisingly impressive, if ultimately failed, dark horse campaign for the title of Governor of Ferdinand. Machado is a household name to citizens of the state, and he has made a number of appearances with Matos. Canvassing campaigns have also taken place in the constituency, led by volunteers from the Vanguard, the FPM's political action wing.

In Fortaleza, the national capital, a previously unheard of FPM party member, Ulisses Seabra, made a surprise splash getting over a third of votes in an initial aggregate poll. Seabra was a worker in the Fortaleza Sewage Department and a leader in their associated union, who was recently noticed by the FPM and quickly picked up as their candidate.

Seabra made a speech in the city today, denouncing "lack of compassionate leadership". He said the major parties always cared about the bottom line before thinking about how a policy would affect the people. Seabra asked, to significant applause, what the average net worth was in the room when Haverkamp made his introductory speech in the Chamber of Commerce. Advertisements were placed in local newspapers, radio and tv channels, advertising Seabra's "common sense" policies for the city. He promised to prioritize stopping crime, cleaning streets, educating children and medicating the ill.

In Mococa, the small number of local FPM members held an impromptu rally, where they listed the direct benefits to Mococa from being part of Fernão. Posters were also distributed with simple messages about unity and strength.
