Preservation and development of the nation's culture must start in the collective interest in the culture. Education, especially education that is accessible to all walks of life, is the testament to that collective interest. Education as a result must stress the arts and sciences so as to facilitate cultural development as a whole.

"That would be why they hate it, it competes with their beloved vision of the State being God." - Tiberius Andius, bemused.

"I've always been out on my own. Dad died in Iraq, and Mom was a heroin addict. She died when I was fifteen, just before the bank could take our dilapidated home. I figured I'd rather starve in the street than in some orphanage (after all, this was 2050s Midwest)."

"But, after a while, I didn't care. I could sleep in a dumpster on a rainy night as long as I had Peter to warm me. I could eat the most rotten produce pilfered from a market's refuse, as long as I shared it with him. I can't even remember what put him out in the cold alleys. Fitting, I suppose...I could only remember happy thoughts and concerns with him."

"But that all changed one day. It was yet another rainy night. We sought shelter under this ruined building up Seventh Street. That was when they showed up...
Privileged little assholes, who roamed the streets, looking for people they could terrorize. People who were victimized by the hard times...the recessions, the war. People who couldn't fight back. Who couldn't afford a lawyer, even if you did. There were three of them. These kids...you could tell they were wealthy. Maybe daddy helped run one of the few remaining oil reserves out-of-state. Maybe mommy was a politician. Who knew. All I know is that they found us, asleep in each other's arms. They woke us up by throwing rocks. They derided us for our torn clothes. Our messy hair...the fact that they saw two boys together. We were content with taking the beatings, so long as they would eventually move on. Leave us alone."

But...they didn't. They goaded the youngest, who couldn't have been that much older than me, to grab a nearby pipe 'go a step above'. He hesitated, but not too much...didn't hesitate much at all when he slammed the pipe into Peter's head over, and over, and over, and over again. I...tried to stop him, but the others put a nasty gash on my head. Then I saw...a thick piece of wood, a splinter from one of the fallen supports, I guess. Wanna know what I did? I grabbed it, pushed my way past the others, and stabbed that gussied-up kid straight through his eye. Over, and over, and over, and over again. He was dead, and the others ran off. And so, it seemed...was Peter. Lying in the cold, disgusting muck, eyes staring towards the clouded stars. Young Peter, with crimson flowing down onto his handsome face..."

"There would be no justice for a vagrant like me. They wouldn't have cared if I was defending someone else - I killed the heir of some oil baron or Washington lobbyist. I ran. I suppose it's lucky that those kids who terrorized us didn't think of me as a person, didn't get a good look at my face. I evaded the cops and skipped town. It was a few weeks after that I met Joseph Hightower. He saw me limping by the side of the backroad, and had his driver pull over the limousine. He had the look of someone legitimate, what with his clean, finely-tailored suit, well-trimmed mustache, and solid, unyielding features...but somehow looked like the kindliest father there was. He got out, looked at me for a minute, grinned, and planted one of his hands on my shoulder. Then he led me to his car, away from everything. Next thing I knew, he brought me to his new 'resort' in Kentucky - New Rome. Not sure why Hightower took a fugitive teenager from the streets like me in. I killed somebody. Didn't have a goddamn penny to my name. Now, don't ask me why the richest man in the world was driving through the Arkansas backwoods. Hightower was always a peculiar sort. Everyone knew that."

"But all I know is he got me cleaned up. Saw to my well-being. Gave me an education. I asked him later on why he did all this for me. He would only answer with 'if I were placed in your position and you in mine, I would expect nothing less than this turn of events'. So what did I decide to do? Well...I joined his private army. I wanted to fight for justice, like the kinda sort that was denied Peter and I so long ago. And I fought hard. I wanted to prove myself. Make the old man proud. And I did. He sent me to West Point after he saw that potential. By the time the bombs fell, I commanded every mercenary company on Hightower's payroll. He trusted me enough to ask me for the most daunting task anyone can imagine - he wanted North America now that the nukes threw the political structure into disarray. And you damn well better believe that I gave it to him."

"Now that Hightower has what he wants, and now that I have my own little badge of office, am I happy? I suppose...but there isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of that last, rainy night, locked in his arms...
"

A post-religious society without any culture is doomed to degeneracy. For that reason it is necessary to preserve the culture of their homeland, or at least append it with a new national, collective goal. Once God is taken out of the picture, we must fill that void with love for the nation and our cultural heritage.

"June 6, 2005. Fuck that date. Fucking Ruthenians." - Tsar Alexander Yordanov. What happened, exactly? Saturation fire of every single ICBM and RBM the Ruthenian Union had in its arsenal, some eight thousand warheads. The Empire remains scarred more than a decade later in various places, a testimony to the effectiveness of the bombardment. Of the barrage, the combined fire of the Belkan Empire's Excalibur ABM system, the Mu Empire and the Imperial Army Air Corps, all but seven were shot down, which stuck home at various points in the Empire's heartland.

"Nothing remotely human about you? You torture and murder living things for fun, you're a vain being that speaks almost solely of your own glory with no shred of humility or self-restraint, and the only way you know how to assert your superiority is by stepping on everything smaller than you. For a God, especially the God destined to destroy humanity, you are unsettlingly human."

"One way you can see the validity of a socialist state simply by seeing their stance on education. If you'll notice, nations such as ours and in China emphasize the importance of education and developing intellectuals. In contrast to the farce in Cambodia which takes perhaps the hardest stance against education."

"It's almost like the political spectrum of this country was designed intentionally to frustrate the pseudo-Socialists who call themselves liberals or Progressives nowadays. First, on the left you have the Partido Liberal, or the Liberal Party. They're socially liberal, in the libertarian sense as it's called. They openly support marriage equality, oppose punishing victimless crimes, and things like that, but have to be about as fiscally tight-fisted as Ebenezer Scrooge, and believe the economy should be minimally regulated, if at all. Then you have the Partido da Democracia Cristã, as it's known locally, the Party of Christian Democracy. They dominate the right wing, and are more open to social programs than the Liberals, but are socially center-right."
