To her good credit, the madame initially refused to divulge any information about her patrons, but she softened quickly once I invoked the name of His Imperial Majesty and the dreaded phrase "security of the Crown". What I learned was that my subject called for a different girl every time he visited, and spent every night doing no more than talking for hours on end. I did not bother to learn the contents of his conversations, and at any rate it neither concerned nor interested me.
I ended my private surveillance not long after.
