"The central axiom of the compatibility of Capitalism with Humanity is that most people can sell their labor for enough money to live on. The question is, what do you do when that axiom no longer holds true? With the rise of Artificial Intelligence, we may see entire classes of people pushed out of the labor force, with no degree of 'retraining' being sufficient. I suggest not getting emotionally attached to Capitalism. It's just an amoral resource allocation algorithm that doesn't care about you."

"Private property is a tool which exists only to serve us. It is neither a person, nor a true extension of a person. As purely an abstract concept, it has no inherent moral weight."

"Ah yes, 'the terrifying efficiency of the State'. It's an internet meme unique to Ashkera's EXINet. It's more of an existential dread than a true horror. One must understand that Ashkerans have a very different relationship with their state than most other peoples, and that they have a rather different state than most other peoples. Things like prediction markets determine the standing of bureaucrats, there are grant-based 'Autonomous State Organizations', and so on. And it's all very, very secretive."

Bereia wrote:"This is why it is said large standing armies are injurious to liberty."

"We have a standing army that could be called large but it is not affiliated with the government in any way. Our Army answers only to the people, which is why the people don't have to arm themselves. In a similar vein, the people don't have to do their own surgery; they have specialists to do it for them."

"The first line of defense of this nation has always been its own citizens. The vast expanses of country and field through which you all have marched is filled with towns whose names' you did not know but whose places you have removed forever. These lands were filled with the indolent men and women of a rich society that which relinquished its rights to their government. First their firearms, then their education's purity, then their privacy and finally their free will. All of those losses could have been avoided if they had not ceded their weapons to the state which oversaw them. Now, our empire has expanded its outposts by a couple dozen planets and a few billion people. Those planets may have been safeguarded by a great empire such as ours that spans countless worlds and whose coffers are swollen with gold. They may have been safeguarded had the ingenuity of their people not been crushed by tyranny and their security not given to hapless armies.
As you return to your loved ones, remember that the rifle with which you have been entrusted is not simply a symbol of gratitude of our army to its soldiers. It is as well a mechanism by which we trust that if some great behemoth should come to conquer us, you will reduce your homes to dust before they take them instead of surrendering them to the altar of imperialism.
Bless you all and goodbye.

"The Palmeran issue of theoretical historiography, being an echo chamber from 1874 to 1905, and receiving attention after WWII; was that it began as a justification for not considering race as a defining feature of human conduct, against Spanish paternalism and later American and European views of supposed Palmeran inferiority. The problem is that by 1945 even if it was clear to many in paper that if race was a useless classification to make policy with, the moralist venture of the first schools were equally moot - or at least unpromising and every bit as arbitrary."

"So, when... Do they use the kilns?"

"I just told you, they don't use kilns. There are no kilns."

"So you're telling me that they don't have to heat up milk to make cheese?"

"That's exactly what I'm saying. You don't get cheese just by cooking milk."

"That's how it was discovered. Someone left some milk on a hot stone, and it turned into cheese."

"That isn't true."

"That's how they used to store it when they had too much milk. They didn't have fridges, David."

"I accept that, Rob."

"So then how did they turn the cheese back into milk? They needed kilns!"

"You can't turn cheese back into milk. Apply heat to cheese, and what you get is melted cheese, not milk."

"You don't know what the hell you're talking about, do you?"

"I know how cheese is made."

"Oh, really?"

"Yes, yes. Well, you take the milk, and then you leave it to... To not ferment exactly, but then you scrape... You separate the curds and whey."

"This isn't a nursery rhyme, David."

"And then you leave it until-"

"You put it into the kiln until it forms a hard skin, so that it doesn't fall to bits."

"Cheese doesn't form it's own skin! They put the skin on!"

"They put the skin on?!"

"YES."

"Did you hear what you just said?! They put the skin on?"

"Oh, what, so you think Edam has a particularly red skin because of the temperate they baked the milk at?!"

"I'M NOT CLAIMING TO BE A FUCKING SCIENTIST, DAVID. I just know they don't- How do they put the skin on?!"

"I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY PUT THE FUCKING SKIN ON."

"What are we talking about then?"

"I didn't start it!"

"You've got a problem, mate."

"No, YOU'VE got a problem."

"You've got a problem."

Postby Ruridova » Mon Oct 24, 2016 10:06 am

"United Ruridova, presently led by President Svyatopolk Obrenovych, is the dominant party in Ruridova and has held power for almost all of the republic's existence, excluding a period of military rule between 1923 and 1953 (though the party continued to dominate the National Assembly after it was reconvened in 1931). Founded in 1879 as the Ruridovan Republican Party, it rebranded itself as the Union of Republicans in 1942 before adopting its present name in 1990. The party weathered assaults from both the Ruridovan Communist Party during the Ruridovan Civil War of 1919-1927, and from reformist protesters seeking political liberalization in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ostensibly a big tent catch-all centrist party, United Ruridova operates in practice as a nationalist party of power, more dedicated to enriching its leadership than to any particular policy alignment. In coalition with United Ruridova is Strong Ruridova, a right-wing nationalist and populist party formed in the 1990s as a reaction to the calls for liberalization and currently led by Hektor Alyokhin. United Ruridova and Strong Ruridova, together, hold the vast majority of the seats in the Ruridovan National Assembly.

There are several opposition parties, of varying degrees of independence. The left-leaning Social Democratic Party (led by Vitaliy Varennikov), conservative Christian Democratic Union (led by Dimytro Lapotnikov), and classical liberal Liberal Democratic Party (led by Pavlo Pimonenko)- the 'three Democrats' as they are sometimes known- are considered the 'weak opposition', because they propose alternative policy tacks and occasionally release statements respectfully disagreeing with the government, but do little else. This was not always the case- the Liberal Democrats are the direct descendants of many of the protest movements that arose in the 1990s, and former Social Democratic leader Mykola Kipriyenko was noted for his outspoken criticisms of the Ruridovan regime- but periods of intense repression in the 2000s under former President (and former United Ruridova leader) Oleksiy Petrenko appear to have weakened the stomachs of the 'three Democrats'.

There is also a 'strong opposition', though it is weakened by division and ideological radicality. The 'strong opposition' on the left is divided between three parties, whose attempts to oppose the government are weakened just as much by infighting as by repression. The progressive liberal People's Front, currently led by Serhiy Lyapunov, is the most successful of the three, but has been challenged by the red-green party Freedom, currently led by Lyudmila Makarova. Even further to the left is the Socialist Worker's Party, presently under Nikita Ossinovsky, the descendant of the communist party that attempted to rebel nearly a century ago. The only rightist 'strong opposition' party is the Radical Party-Our Land, currently led by Bohuslav Skripchenko, which competes with Strong Ruridova for voters. The concept of the Radical Party-Our Land working with any of the other opposition parties, strong or weak, is seen as antithetical to both sides.

Ironically, Vilkia (still officially the Kingdom of Ruridova) is far more of a multiparty democracy than Ruridova. Though the country was an autocratic absolute monarchy during the Ruridovan Revolution, the country liberalized steady during the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, with the creation of an elected legislature- the Verkhovna Rada- in 1925 and the transfer of most executive power from the king to the prime minister in 1947. Since then the rump government has functioned as a multiparty constitutional monarchy, with a variety of parties coming in and out of existence.

The present government of Vilkia consists of an alliance between the Democratic Left (a center-leftist party led by Prime Minister Yevgeniy Kovalchuk), Revival (a social democratic party led by Nadezhda Pankratova), and the Union of Greens (an environmentalist party led by Ahrypina Mykhayeva), in a pan-leftist coalition. The official opposition, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a pan-rightist coalition between Fatherland (a center-rightist party led by Yevdokiya Fyodorenko), the Our Ruridova Bloc (a conservative party led by Konstantin Lukyankov), and Independence (a libertarian party led by Nikifor Lyashko). The miscellaneous opposition consists of the Communist Party of Ruridova (presently led by Spartak Husyev), which did not rebel in the territories controlled by Vilkia and thus has continued to exist there, and Alternative for Ruridova (presently led by Yaroslava Ustymenko), a far-right populist party more of the Western European mold."

"Compared to her parents' wild sexuality, the aptly named Magdalena Zorilla Nagi was very scrupulous in that respect even though she claimed she was cursed with impulses to taunt the Demiurge and imagining St. George's buttocks in prayer. Perhaps another aspect of her personality problems were implicated in the use of distilled disinfectants in ritual cleansing, or at least from what diaries of herself and peers reported during her religious life in the West Coabana Order of Priestesses from 2058 to 2063. Her life in the Ministry of State Security (2033-2037) as a sub-officer is scant for obvious reasons, other than the fact she met her husband there possibly acting as an interpreter, before settling down to live a mundane life as Magda Wilkins so different and far away from her parents' spotlight as early as reaching 25 years of age.

In all cases, after a 21 year lapse, she's more remembered for the hand-made illustrated reproduction of a Hermetic and psychoanalytic treatise, her obligated task to the Order and..."

"This notion in some countries that public sector workers should be stripped of their right to unionize is preposterous and immoral. What makes a janitor of a public building different from the janitor of a private building? The government is an employer and workers under all employers deserve basic workers rights, whether or not their employer is public or private. I am aware that the underlying logic is that it will cut costs, but by that logic all unions should be abolished for interrupting the flow of the economy with their strikes and collective bargaining. At what cost comes such cost-cutting legislation? It transforms a right into a privilege only private workers can have, by denying it to anyone who works for the public sector. It demeans the public worker into something less than a private worker, pats on the back for being a selfless public servant does not change the fact that the private worker who does not take up this responsibility gets more rights than those who do. In the end, it is based on forgetting the fact that the man who works in the public sector is a human being, a creature with needs and wants that society must recognize for the sake of human happiness. The union was invented and given to the private worker because despite its interference in the economy we recognize that workers need a means to voice their concerns with their employers, a CEO can't schedule appointments for all of their employees or nothing would get done. Similarly a high-level bureaucrat can't interview all of his workers to make sure their working spaces are decent and pay is livable without grinding government to a halt. The union itself is a concept many debate today, but nevertheless it is a concept many governments have allowed private workers to practice freely without legal repression. There is no moral reason public workers should be denied what their private worker neighbors are given."
