"Meeting regarding hypothetical feasibility of DEEWANE; on the condition that the far-right in Europe continues making gains in the foreseeable future and the possibility of a fragmented EU. Furthermore the current 'off-chance' of a certain European state falling under such a regime, and assessing the risk of a potentially hostile entity in our American continent- where even oil deposits could be detrimental if beneficial to such an entity; assets of course better under Latin American control, this under a justified means of preventative self-defense.

Brazilian officials open to conversation, and they confide in letting our Argentine counterparts in now. Something we are not sure of ourselves, even though they'll inevitably have to be called forth. In either case Mr. Ambassador, you are authorized to proceed with the utmost caution, however under the circumstances I feel the disposition is of our Executive office after, of course, consultations with you and the heads of the Ministry of Defense."

"The moniker 'safety in numbers' works mostly. The larger the group, the safer you will be as long as each member is cooperative.
However, safety in numbers, after some time, will stop meaning safety for you and instead become safety for the group organisers. If individual members don't step up and speak out, the individual gets swallowed up in the whole.
At is simplest, that is dehumanisation."

"I've run on crews that went out hunting slavers, sure. I'm proud to admit it. I've shot slavers dead on the decks of their own ships, then fed their corpses to the sharks."

-- Captain Jacqueline "Jolly Jack" Diaz, of the whaling ship Calcutta.

"Yes, you eat well. Of course you do. Your masters know a slave who can't work because he is malnourished is useless. Yes, you have a warm bed. A slave crippled from exposure is useless. Yes, you have clothes, because a slave who is naked is both offensive to others and implies his master has no money to buy him clothes. None of these things are for you, for your benefit."

-- George Soto, captain of the pirate ship Lokasenna, to a liberated slave.

"No, that common woman's cut isn't stereotypically Asian. It's Orinoco, specifically Tanlipang or Yanomami. The Palmerans took a liking to it because they realized women fight better with those bowl-like cuts and that people in drag was an excuse to use more conscripts in Colonial times. That and they have a thing for Indians...or maybe they enjoyed getting lost and side-tracked a bit too much in South American jungles. There's a reason Tristes Tropiques was a best seller and an object of shame all at once.

Oh, and they have some old wive's tale about saving proteins and getting long hair to be a waste of time."

"The chief danger within the Tartarus System is not the gargantuan black hole itself, for it is nearing the end of its life and no longer sucks in everything around it (provided you don't get too close), but rather the cult that worships it. The Cult of Tartarus have been labeled a terrorist group by the Commonwealth Administration, and are well equipped for a rogue organisation, possessing military-grade weapons and spacecraft. They are rumoured to operate from a space station near the black hole, providing another reason to stay away from the awe inspiring sphere of darkness."

"Render unto Caliph the things that are Caliph's." - Unofficial motto of Jizya Collection Office prior to its abolition in 1962 C.E

"'Societal Integration of Disenfranchised Religious and Ethnic Groups', 'National Code of Law', 'Centralization of Millet System', these names are nothing but the Sublime Porte's self-parodying doublespeak for discrimination and slow genocide of non-Muslims and it is almost ascertained that the Wazirs of the Court are unable to pronounce them without a restrained burst of chuckle. The Porte's ancient policy of Dhimmitude was that of somewhat abusive, yet ultimately benign neglect, and the authority of Patriarchs and Rabbis had permitted us at least nominal self-governance. Now the so-called Reformists are attempting to rob it away, replacing them with the 'progressive, equal' Code of Law that asserts the superiority of Muslims in a passive-aggressive manner and practically forced the People of the Book into apostates who abandon their law[...]"

"You go into a cell - it is quite literally a cell comrades, I forget the exact dimensions, but it is not particularly wide I assure you. There is your desk, it has a very nice lamp, there is a bed on the far side, well, a kind of glorified sleeping-bag, and on the desk sits your assessment. Part I is the part which most baffles participants, though it is in fact the least difficult, its a strange mixture of standard isometric testing, mathematics and various pattern-games of that variety. Part II is a 10,000 word essay on the title provided by the examiner, Part III is...poetic analysis, because our culture needs to get its fucking priorities straight, 5000-2000 words generally, Part IV is a 10,000 or more word essay on any subject of the applicant's choice, Part V takes the form of counter-factual history: a scenario from Mackonian or Foreign history is briefly outlined and the applicant must answer a 'What if?' Part VI is a choice between solving some arcane logical problems, writing a brief scientific dissertation on a (notoriously obscure) topic, designing a "Garden-Palace and train-station of the Late Khalyran period' or composing three articles of poetry in calligraphic old Cyrmalthic...again, I'm telling them to get their priorities straight. Part VII consists of a specially devised civic problem, financial crash, rebellion, new sewage system, corruption, racial inequality, invasion by a hostile power, currency trading...it could be anything. For a solution provided by the subject which can be of any length or brevity. The time limit is three days. You get nothing but coffee and dry crackers."

-Zilkas Soekthar-Mesok, probably being somewhat economical with the truth in describing the Seventh Sector election process, a ritual deeply shrouded in myth and fantasy by the Mackonian public with some rumours claiming it involves everything from Satanist ceremonies to predicting the results of foreign elections and constructing a functioning water-clock.

"The natural metaphysics of humanity presented in all of the great faiths consists of the belief that man has his squishy pink body which will die and within it he has something which makes him think which will not. Through being nice to his fellows this immortal soul can survive death to gain happiness, usually through unity with some greater consciousness. Cyrzarii, who are predestined to madness from birth, cannot have this - for they know, painfully, that the mind is just as finite as the body and indeed more so. The Cyrzarii knows the light within him will be besieged by waves of shadow, it will dim to a void, and the body outside of it be reduced to a howling wreck beheld in fright by the young eyes who laugh at this mad portent to their future. There can be no 'world beyond' of pure surviving consciousness, for there is no consciousness to survive which does not perish before death. The only salvation for him is to harness that brief flicker of consciousness to pull with frantic speed the chariot of daemonic genius on which he may ride into the darkness with some slim hope of eternity."

-Eleanor White, The Cyrzarii Mind.

"Lol.
Truly your paranoia knows no bounds. Nor does your naivety.
All three countries you've mentioned, in exchange for the trade deals with the EU which keep them afloat, pay more per capita towards the EU than they would do as EU member countries, and all three are subject to all the migration, trade, export, import, pollution, agricultural, fishery and fuel purity rules that EU member states are subject to... And yet, non of them get a vote... It's a terrible deal, but they take it anyway, because they see their countries as being incompatible with EU membership, but their nations are unsustainable without free trade with Europe.
Norway has a high-wage, high-tax, high-training, recourse-based economy which they see as structurally-incompatible with EU membership.
Iceland has backwards cultural laws, and a small, high-tax finance-driven economy also incompatible with EU membership.
Switzerland has a foreign policy incompatible with EU membership... Shit, they have a foreign policy incompatible with tunnels and bridges which are not fitted with explosives, just so that they can be easily blown-up in case of another world war.
Yorkshire, of course, has removed gender from it's laws.
Every other country that has been given the opportunity to join the EU has taken it, and every part of the EU has benefited, financially and socially from membership. There is no doubt about that.
So, I guess Norway 'Bows to the will of Brussels' every day, in that every regulation set in the EU parliament that, say, Portugal follows, Norway does too. But Portugal gets to vote on what those regulations are and Norway does not..."
