"This modern notion which has evolved and become fashionable in recent years, that the monarchy is to intervene in politics as little as possible, is challenged by the fact that the most popular monarchs have all been politically active. But that is not to say that the monarchy cannot act as if it is above politics - which it ought to do, for to be above politics is a mark of highness - whilst maintaining political power."

Yes we have tea ceremonies here... no, they aren't really anything religious or anything here and it's really just a fancy way to greet your visitors or business partners. It is a well known custom, that's all. But you have to be extremely specific about it, the water temperature, the type of tea, the utensils, the amount of sugar, and the type of sweets or snacks are variable depending on rather 'unsual' things. Like the month, the season, what the date is on an Islamic calendar, whether or not it is during a rain retreat, the time of day, and the basis of the partnership or level of relationship.

It's complicated, haha.

"No, actually, we like democracies. Lower likelihood of mass abuses of the citizenry, lower likelihood of refugees, lower likelihood of spontaneous war of aggression, and so on. They can be annoying, but they're easier to get along with, and we can always contribute to some political parties to ensure things go smoothly.

It's the dictatorships you have to watch out for. Take Kaskadistan for instance. What happens when Walter Waffenburg dies? It may take a while, but he is still mortal. Will there be an invasion? A civil war? There are already refugees.

No, we like democracies. It's the democracies that don't like us."

Well, I guess you can say we have an elective monarchy... because we admired the Minang and Riau Malay peoples on how they picked their clan leaders. Also out of sheer pragmatism I mean when six previous Sultans and Sultanas were sworn ascetic virgins and had no children―or had illegitimate ones―and the relatives are either dead or are in a constant game of thrones, of course the compromise is for each clan to nominate a noble successor, of which is complicated already, and have them be elected by each matriarch of each clan and problem solved...

Oh if it only were that easy. It was often so much more messier, and we had to adopt the Chinese method for civil office selection at one point because it was getting too messy.

Tuanku Hassan VI (1877-1890, reigned from 1885-1890), Tuanku Sulaiman I (1881-1933, reigned from 1921-1933), Tuanku Mohammed IV (1801-1823, reigned from 1819-1823), Tuanku Shah Abdurrahman II (1652-1701, reigned from 1679-1701), Tuanku ngaputri Nurul I* (1890-1921, reigned from 1910-1921), and Tuanku ngaputri Yasmin the Immolater** (1645-1691, reigned since birth)... all created their respective succession crises and subsequent need of elections to select a Sultan.

―E. Mosa Tan (Tan Jinhai), independent journalist and tour guide

*Nurul I― Virgin Queen and never married due to dying at a young age, expanded the Sultanate of Surawijaya to it's greatest extent and subsequently lost it all to the British upon her death
**Yasmin the Immolater― Married, sired three daughters and one son, as well as a handful of illegitimate children, burned all of them along with several officials in the old palace, considered the Guardian of Surawijaya from the Portuguese. Boogeyman status.

"The concept is simple yet brilliant, when one thinks about it. It can easily be defined by mutating some of the words by Benito Mussolini on Anarchy. Anarchy is a state in temporary transition, a state of raw emotion and impulse put upon it by the nature of its spontaneous birth and death. Whereas Agnocracy is a state in permanent transition, from the stupid and weak to the brilliant and strong, going forever onward until doomsday itself. It is burningly emotional in it's denial of the nihilistic universe around it by making the eternal strive for the ideal of perfection it's goal, but also chillingly rational in how it combats this nihilism through a realistically designed political-economic system. It is the string the Buddha learned of from the lute player and his student, not too tight that it will break and not too loose that it will make no sound. The Doctrine of Control is just that, pure control, stagnation, a state in permanent stasis, the darkened mirror of Agnocracy in that it uses the same systems to create and sustain this nihilistic horror. But a reckoning is coming, one day the God of Control, sitting in his tower over Phisych University, one day he will die and this society suspended upon the waves of the world will finally have the chance to become what it has long been a parody of. Mark my words, Phisych University will be the second Agnocratic state."

"Yes. There have been a few diplomatic incidents. You see, Ashkerans tend to travel everywhere armed, whether with a small, concealable pistol, something heavier like a rifle, or a nice thick hunting knife. All semi-automatic, of course. This is not really a political statement but a practical necessity in a country where the wildlife is uniquely violent towards humans. Even the required service in the reserves is mostly about teaching people to shoot straight and survive in camping conditions. Other people will give you some long lecture about freedom and the right to bear arms and blah blah blah, but what it comes down to is that every few weeks some idiot will go outside the animal fences without a gun and then he gets chewed to bits by wallabacks or murderoos or whatever. And they've learned what guns are now, some of them, and will go after people who don't have them.

Honestly the gun ownership level is half the reason for the annual psyche exam.

So of course since this is the default assumption for Ashkera, and lots of countries are a lot more dangerous on the crime side of things, it sometimes happens that a citizen will bring his rifle along in his checked baggage and get hit with a weapons trafficking charge, and then the government has to bail him out and it makes the international news circuit.

By now it's become a stereotype."

" The Horrors and Joys of Epiphanies is Tsuneko Nagi's/Zorilla's most known 'interpretations' of Las Palmeras as part of her general Apocrypha. It mentions the 'impurity of purity and vice versa' for a country who considers the divine indecipherable and the human condition some form of study about 'good devils and bad angels' for a culture who feels happy because they know things will go wrong. The base according to her is a Christian mindset which is curiously placed in 180° for a Western country in some stances.

It's her amateurish interpretation on why most Japanese imports aren't well bought even in a Globalized setting save for the more tolerant (Middle Class) sectors of Palmeran society. Her answer is a supposed rationalization of syncretism between original 'base' thought (benevolent/malevolent schemes of animist Indigenous and African traditions) and more Christian (Good/Bad) superimposed on the traits of things.
...
According to her; in Shinto and some Buddhist texts people are born pure and pollution occurs later. In the Palmeran mindset, humans are natural-born Tricksters because self-conceptualization makes it inevitable- for good or bad but always for benefit."

"I can't think of any nicer witch than her."

"The whole reason Barboneia has Russian weaponry and military outfits from the Cold War era is because we were a major trading partner of them and even considered joining. They collapsed before that could happen, though. The reason we've never updated them is because we don't find a need to. Nowadays we're still quite good partners with the Russians, and I'm sure they'd be happy to oblige to give us some more modernized weaponry and outfits and such.
