[NSG Senate] The March for a Better World

Postby We are the 99 » Fri May 01, 2015 8:47 pm

General Gomez Square
San Cristobal Central Business District

The music was loud, the people were majorly pissed off against the government and big banners and flags proudly waved in the wind, displaying their anger in all its literary beauty.

"We demand justice!" yelled unemployed farmer Fernando Dias into the microphone, to the raucous cheers of the 2,000 people that answered his Facebook call for a massive rally in the heart of the nation's economy, San Cristobal's central business district. "We are goddamn fucking tired of this. No jobs, no money, no life, we demand the government to break the banks and help their own citizens! We are the 99%, and we demand to be treated like fucking human beings!"

The mood was a mix of happiness and anger. At a glance, everyone seemed very mad and about to turn into an angry mob, but on the other hand, there were hundreds of children amongst the crowd, as well as families and people laughing, having a beer and making chicken tortillas on a barbecue stove. Full of contradictions, the crowd was massive and came from all aspects of life, workers, intellectuals, students, communists, the homeless. Basically everyone that had an ax to grind with the government of Calaverde. They stayed in the square for now, but would soon head onto the road. Their goal was to march through the central business district all the way to Parliament Square and present Prime Minister Salvador O'Hara with a petition for immediate aid for the 10% of working-age Calaverdeans who were unemployed.

Fernando hopped off the makeshift stage, ceding the way for nationalist leader Marco Chavez to speak.

Police officers line the protest route, ensuring safety of all participants and the public. As long as things did not become violent, Alfredo Castell maintained an order to his men no to interfere with the demonstration. As long as no one exceeded the bounds of the law, they would not step-in. Only monitor.

Marco Chavez, president of the Calaverdean Patriot's League, got up onto the stage to speak. The young man stared out into the crowd.

"Thank you Fernando. We're here today to start taking back our country. For too long the government has been contempt of the people, more interested in protecting its own interests. The poor, the vulnerable, the disenfranchised have come out in force today, on May Day, to show the government what we really think. The government's policies have been to uphold the oppressive class system, the exploitative capitalist structure, the goals of foreign corporations. When we march to the Parliament, lets show them we will not stand for this system to continue! The people of Calaverde want real equality! We want real sovereignty! We want real jobs!"

The crowd cheered at Chavez's speech and began to chant '"WE WANT JOBS! WE WANT JOBS! WE WANT JOBS!"

A man who looked suspiciously like Christian Rodriguez passed by, before taking note of what was going on, and moved closer to see what was happening.

The 2,000 strong crowd began to march from the Square down Queen Victoria Way, through the Central Business District. They said chants demanding employment. Signs and banners were held aloft as they made their way down the avenue. They watched the police with suspicion as they did so.

Among their number was 200 or so DLFC operatives, the leaders of whom gathered under the Calaverdean Patriot's League banner towards the front of the rally. They were prepared for the event that the police tried to stop their protest.

Don Juan, the revengeful ground hog, scurried into the street, infront of the marching crowd.

He turned to them and started making noises.

Commander Manuel Paciani stood in the mobile command post erected about a block over from the protest, where reserve officers stood on standby in case things went wrong with the demonstration. With the rising amount of terrorist attacks the police would be watching over the demonstration intently for any signs of possible explosive devices. The Prefect of San Cristobal had ordered that the demonstration be kept away from major thoroughfares as not to interfere with major transport, as well so that angry motorists did not try to run down protesters.

Lines of shiny black riot gear sat in neat little rows with officers in navy blue BDUs casually chatting.

The ground hog bit the man's hand.

"Ow. Stupid animal."

The marchers moved to either side of the animal as they continued down the street.

The ground hog, content that he had made the march his bitch, nonchalantly followed behind.

Some protesters were brushing up near police who were aligned along the street due to the ground hog. One burly middle aged man felt uncomfortable and pushed a policeman out of his way as he walked by.

The constable that was shoved drew upon his mace and was about to spray the man before he was grabbed by a supervisor, "Come on now lad, let's not start the riot."

A DL intern watches the march from the sidelines, while munching on a Snickers bar, his first meal in a week.

Gloria sat in the drawing room of her estate along the southern coast. It was a former colonial plantation home that'd been refurbished. She sat smoking a relaxing kretek, watching the protest on tv. "What a bunch of lazy bums."

The San Cristóbal chapter of the Calaverde Islamic Youth Guards arrives and begins standing in a line in front of a mosque the crowd will be passing if they continue down the street. Aware that lines of police in riot gear don't contribute to a friendly atmosphere, they are prepared with their best verbal takedowns to bring protestors to their knees by the power of words.
