Why should we recognize them? We're a small country in the Caribbean, not like our recognition will haul much weight.

Well, should we acknowledge the obvious or should we stick our heads in the ground and act like a five year old in a playground?

Background: Ignacio Contreras was born to a wealthy family in January 1955, and was the fourth of six children. His father was a civil servant and his mother a homemaker. As a child with a traditional Catholic education, Ignacio wanted to follow his older brother into the priesthood, but eventually decided to go to university to study law. He qualified as a lawyer in 1978, and specialised in litigation. He formed his own firm - Contreras, Polanco, y Herrero - in 1991, and has served as a senior partner there ever since. In 2014, Ignacio decided to step back from the day-to-day practice of law and entered electoral politics, being comfortably elected to the Senate for his own party, the Partido Conservador. Any Questions from the Public to be answered?
  • Are you open for questions? - Yes, I am!
  • What are your views on the recent surge of support in Georgian Monarchism. If you support it how would you like to see the monarchy established and how powerful would you wish it to be and if not are you okay with the Status Quo of the Georgian government or do you think democratic reform is needed in some way? - I would be delighted to see the monarchy restored in Georgia, a country for which I have a great fondness. Very good wine. Though the specific level of political involvement the monarch would have is ultimately up to the Georgian people, I would very much like to see Georgia retain and develop its constitutional and democratic nature.
  • Question to all senators: do you support laws against hate speech? - I would favour the banning of incitement to violence, but seek to protect free speech otherwise. We cannot have over-zealous police arresting preachers or politicians for espousing unpopular beliefs.

Positions in Government:
President

Constituency: San Cristobal - Government District.
Political Ideology: Social Democract
Family: u wot m8
Background: Eugenia Malgrave was born in San Cristobal, Calaverde on the 21st of May 1980 to Novak and Julia Malgrave, as part of a small slavic community Eugenia initially found it difficult to make friends and spent more time focusing on academia. At the time her father was well known in the migrant community as a successful businessman and a fixer of sorts for those with relatives behind the iron curtain, following the collapse of his country and the Soviet Union he expanded his operation using the economic chaos and more shady developments to expand his operations overseas. As a result of this economic success Eugenia was transferred to a private school until she was accepted into the LSE, obtaining a BSc in Government and Economics she returned to the newly democratic Calaverde becoming one of the founding members and chairperson of the Democratic Left she successfully stood for parliament pledging to fight social and economic injustice in the nation.

Dislikes: Inequality, Religious fundamentalists, Racists, Anti-Science, Imperialism, Privatisation.
Any Questions from the Public to be answered?
  • How did your upbringing influence your desire to enter politics? - I consider myself lucky because my upbringing allowed me to enjoy quality education and avoid most of the brutality of the dictatorship, when I returned home I was reminded of how the US exploited this countries economy and people. I entered politics to provide economic equality to the people and help establish an independent democratic Calaverde we can all be proud of.
  • What is your opinion on the situation in Ukraine and its effects rippling across Europe, particularly in Russia? - Russia's annexation of Crimea and subsequent military intervention in the east of the country is an immature and illegal response to the will of the Ukrainian people to decide their own political and economic destiny. It reminds me of how the US acted towards left-wing movements in our part of the world and is completely unacceptable in this day. I stand by the Ukrainian people in their fight for freedom.
  • How should Calaverde respond to the recent decline in global oil prices? - We should remember that the current price of oil is being maintained by Saudi Arabia in an attempt to kill the shale gas industry. It won't last and we should establish schemes to promote energy efficiency and renewable/nuclear sources of energy in the country to remove our dependence from oil.
  • What is your proposal for maintaining Calaverde's biodiversity, especially in its rainforest and coast? - I think we should look at establishing national parks and specialist conversationalist zones for areas of natural beauty alongside national legislation to regulate industry and commerce.
  • What international organizations do you believe Calaverde should join? - The Commonwealth, Francophonie, the OIAS, the OAS
  • What partially-recognized countries should Calaverde recognize? (Kosovo, Palestine, etc) - I think the recent past few months have shown the world why an independent Kurdish state must be recognised as soon as possible, while the issue of Palestinian sovereignty must also be recognised we should also take into consideration the rights of Israel and the role of extremist organisations. On the issue of Kosovo I think we should should stand-by the territorial integrity of Serbia and reward the progress it has made on tracking down war criminals and embracing democracy by starting to re-integrate the territory back into Serbia under the same semi-autonomous status it enjoyed during the days of the Socialist Republic of Serbia.
  • What is your stance on Space Exploration? - As an individual nation we can't afford to establish a meaningful space program however the economic and scientific benefits to space exploration cannot be ignored and I feel that we must start expanding into the stars as soon as possible. In order to achieve these goals I think we need to look to our brothers and sisters in neighbouring countries and follow the example of the European Space Agency in forming an inter-regional space agency to carry the financial burden and widen the talent pool available
  • Do you think the so called "Pink Tide" that has swept portions of Latin America could harm Calaverde? - We should all remember that the "pink tide" phrase was coined because previous democratically elected governments faced sabotage and direct intervention from the US on behalf of their corporate interests. I think Calverde can look at nations like Uruguay for guidance during this time and we should not listen to fear mongers and US puppets.
  • Should our nation look into taking part in free trade agreements similar to CAFTA? - No. If we are to take part in any regional free trade agreements then we should protect vital parts of our economic and public sector from foreign profiteers.
  • Senator, you mentioned that you are in favor of animal rights. How far would you like to see these rights extend? - I was referring to the abject cruelty some animals are subjected to for our entertainment and the efforts are species have undertaken to destroy natural habitats and drive other creatures into extinction. So we need a double front to prevent animal cruelty at home and protect the natural habitats of endangered wildlife.
  • To all senators: thoughts on prostitution law reform? Should we decriminalize it, ban it, legalize it, or somewhere inbetween? - I believe that the criminalisation of prostitution harms the workers in the industry and the nation overall as forcing an industry into the shadows not only provides more income for criminal gangs but it brings violence, disease and other horrors. I'm in favour of a strongly regulated sex industry so it becomes a choice not a continued form of slavery.
  • Malgrave, what is your favorite movie and why is it Fight Club? - Fight Club? I don't have a specific list of favourite films but at the moment I would say Das Boot, North by Northwest, District 9 and the Bourne Ultimatium are my favourite flicks.
  • President Malgrave, is it ever difficult being a very powerful woman in the male-dominated political scene? - I believe the male-dominated political and economic elite in Calaverde are frightened by the rise of female politicians and businesspeople as they recognise the establishment of a level playing field would destroy their powerbase, so you can see them lash out and try and destroy the move towards equality. I've been called a lemon, bitch and other insults for standing up for the interests of citizens and comments have been made on my appearance when similar comments would not be made against a male politician.

As President I hope to inspire other women into the political field so we can continue the fight against exclusion and sexist elitism in society.
  • To all Senators, what are your thoughts on Pyotr Aminev's most recent (and controversial) article? - Pytor's recent argument highlights his continued ignorance of left-wing politics and the history of our nation. The Junta murdered and tortured thousands of citizens regardless of faith or political/ethnic background and to even begin to excuse these crimes because some baseless fear of communists and socialists is unacceptable to those who suffered during the dark days of authoritarianism.7
  • Ms. Malgrave, are there any particular candidates in the Democratic Left that you are supporting for president? - I fully support the candidacy of Michael Giuliani and I shall be campaigning tirelessly to make that a reality.
  • What is your position on an Association Agreement with The European Union and Calaverde? -I don't think that Calaverde needs to enter into an association agreement with the European Union. In my opinion current trade-agreements is the far better option.
  • Do you support a Universal Basic Income? - It is becoming clear that the increased automation of the economy will lead to some form of UBI being required in the future, however in the short-term I believe that a strong minimum wage and a strongly regulated economy + welfare state is a superior option.
  • Would you support a Calaverdean application for membership in the EU? - No
  • Would you support a Calaverdean application for membership in CARICOM/CARIFORUM? - No
  • Would you support a Calaverdean application for membership in the African Union - No

Senator, could you explain why you believe that recognizing one party in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but not the other, constitutes "taking a neutral stance"?

I never said we should recognize Israel. I think we need to recognize both or neither, and frankly I think the latter gives us more room to be a good third party. If we decide to recognize both I'm fine with that as well, my only issue is recognizing one and not the other. I must concede that I am looking too far in the future, perhaps. As we have not yet established ourselves on the world stage, we may not be able to have the luxury of imagining ourselves as a facilitator of negotiations. We will have to see what our status is in a few months, and my policy will change accordingly. I suspect I will have to retreat somewhat.

Hate speech? No, all people have the right to an opinion of if it is conceived in ignorance and hate. However if said speech is proven to be the instigation of a crime of some sort said person should be charged with inciting violence.

Hate speech is deplorable and has no place in our society, but it is not the place of the government to exclude it from the public arena. Unless the hate speech include incitements to violence or otherwise commit crimes against that group, it must be the place of compassionate Calaverdeans to shun hate mongers and make the unwantedness of their bigotry felt.

Hate speech is a touchy subject, and I wholeheartedly support the freedom of speech. However, I believe anything calling for the extermination of a certain ethnic or religious, or any group of people, should not be allowed.

Whilst hate speech is an ignorant, asinine way of presenting bigoted viewpoints, the regulation of such speech is not the place of the government. I believe there should be a distinction between the presentation of views, such as racist viewpoints, and incitement to violence, such as calling for violence on a minority group.

Absolutely. We have an obligation under international law to criminalise speech that incites discrimination and hate, and we should move quickly towards fulfilling what is expected from us by the greater international community.

If someone is threatening or harassing someone, it should be illegal. Beyond that, there should be no laws regarding speech.

So if the goals of the AIP end in failure what would your second course of action? For instence if hypotheticly speaking the Dutch minority got their independence and your economy were to go into free fall what would your course of action be? Aside from domestic fixes to the economic and monetary systems would you consiter reestablished yourself with Calaverde or propose a union of some sort with the Netherlands?

If Adrius were to fail somehow, I would support some sort of union with the Netherlands.

They have effect on my personal views yes but my politics are highly secular as I believe religion and government (and politics in general through extension) do not belong together at any level.
