Although not native to Calaverde, the cartel known as 'La Corpo' (short for 'Corporação') has taken a keen interest in the nation's unexploited potential. The cartel can trace its roots, originally, back to the nation of Brazil, and specifically to the Vila Cruzeiro favela in Rio de Janeiro. Although the original members spoke Portuguese, the most commonly spoken language in the group has changed to Spanish as the cartel's operations grew.

La Corpo is known for its brutality, and also for its quasi-religious ideology. The founder of La Corpo, Vitor Machado, is a deeply spiritual man, and many of the cartel's operations have a religious undertone due to this connection. Like some similar cartels in Mexico, La Corpo refers to its killings as "divine justice", and is frequently featured in "narcocorridos", or Robin Hood-esque ballads about the cartel. In the cities where La Corpo has solidified its presence, enemies of the cartel can expect swift, and oftentimes public retribution.

They are not inclined to violence, but they are not afraid to use it when provoked.

It was during this time that Gustavo became familiarized with politics. After the restoration of democracy in Calaverde, Gustavo returned to his birthplace in 2009, working as a lawyer for a not-for-profit organization providing legal services to low income persons. At the age of 34, he was elected to the Parliament in July of 2015 as a member of the Social Democratic Alliance.

Background:

Despite its recent formation, the CNP has existed as a social movement since the early 20th century. After the end of WWII, the nationalist groups in Calaverde saw a steep decline in membership and influence. Since the 80s, though, tough economic conditions and other factors have increased the public's interest in a more nationalist government, culminating in the formation of the CNP in 2015. The CNP represents a merger of several independent groups and parties in Calaverde, making it now the nation's most prominent force for a one-party state.

The CNP is formed of three distinct groups. Members represent the core of the party, voting and taking part in ceremonies, parades and events. Then there are officers, largely in charge of party administration. All senators in the party are members of this second group automatically. Finally, there is the Partisan Corps, the security branch of the party. Largely made up of military veterans and other persons with combat knowledge and experience, the Partisan Corps is an elite guard who take part in frequent ceremonies and events to heighten their almost fanatical devotion to the party. Indigenous occultism is popular among many Partisan Corpsmen, and is encouraged as a connection to Calaverde's proud heritage.

Background: Azúcar-Andersson was founded in 1663 by Guillermo Randigüa. As it was founded in what used to be sugar fields, it was named Ciudad de Azúcar. In 1702, Swedish settlers in Estonia, led by Erik Andersson, left to America because of the Great Northern War. Randigüa granted them part of their lands; in exchange, part of the resources produced and money earned by the Swedish settlers would be given back to Randigüa. In 1754, the two settlements united, founding the City of Azúcar-Andersson. The City slowly grew until 1962, when the city reached its peak population. Indeed, in the 1960s, many rich citizens left this city to more important cities.

Azúcar-Andersson is a developing city. Politically its citizens are fairly left-wing and the IWP holds control of the Constituency. In recent years, the rise of information technology allowed many small corporations in Azúcar-Andersson to rise at national levels.

Background: Vladimiro Agustin Alejandro Santa Cruz was born in the small town of Gilliamstown in western Calaverde. He grew up in an average, lower-class household, just above the poverty line. Spending most of his childhood far away from the large, inland urban metropolises, he remains to this day a quaint, humble man.
His parents were originally Peruvian. As protesters against the military rule that lasted from 1948 to 1956, they feared persecution from Manuel Odría's government, fleeing the nation in 1953 to stay with family in Gilliamstown. The couple soon gave birth to Vladimiro's older brother, Augusto, and on April 14th, 1961, Vladimiro de Santa was born.
During his teens in the mid 1970s, Vladimiro studied through high school like anyone else, and had a penchant for political science and current affairs. He wanted to attend college, overseas if possible, and managed to rack up the necessary finances to study for five years in Argentina. Then, all his dreams came crashing down in 1984. The military couped the government ahead of elections which were likely to consolidate the power of the Social Democratic Party.
Vladimiro was in Cordoba for college when the takeover of the government by Pablo Mendoza occurred. There he read The Open Society and it's enemies, and developed a strong attachment to the fight for Liberalism against Tyranny.
The most chilling experience in Vladimiro's life came with his return to Calaverde in 1986. While headed to San Cristobal International Airport, the airplane was downed by a failing engine over the Atlantic Ocean. He survived the experience, living in a life raft for two days with a few other people before a cargo ship picked them up and delivered them to the shore of Puerto Luz.
Upon arriving home, Vladimiro found that there was no need for political science. The Junta had really shaken up the nation, and the economy had plummeted. Returning to Gilliamstown, he was filled with knowledge, but tired and defeated.
After a few months of job-searching, he became a taxi driver for a line in San Cristobal, and moved there, renting a cheap apartment. He stuck with that job for many years, it never got boring meeting new people. It didn't pay handsomely, but he made a living off of it, better than many others in the big city.
During the civil war, business became scare for Vladimiro. He had to scrounge a bit more, and eventually all of San Cristobal was under siege, some parts by rebels, some parts by government forces. He fled the city in early 2008, and lived with his family in Gilliamstown, which was for the most part stable. The city experienced little fighting, and though the police force was cut off from its main funding, the nice, rural locale remained protected by volunteers, and stayed neutral until its incorporation into the new government in 2014.
By the war's end, Vladimiro finally found his calling. His political knowledge could finally be put to the test in the new government, so he decided to run for a position in the Parliament. He ran as an independent in the May and July elections, and lost both times. However, the FDP stronghold lost its representative in mid-August of 2015. A carbomb by unknown terrorists claimed the life of Gilliamstown's representative, so Vladimiro ran for the nomination.
