Brief History of Your Nation:

Aurelia is a city in the Empire of Valaran. In 1897, it experienced decline, causing sizeable chunks of its population to leave search of new lands to colonize and explore. On April 5, 1897, the merchant Adam Baker set sail with a group of 136 men, women, and children on his ship, the Leviathan. They headed west for various reasons - most were in search of a new home, but Baker himself left due to his heavy support of libertarianism, which was unpopular during the time. On December 28, 1897, after months of traveling, they finally arrived in an uncharted land. Baker named it "West Aurelia" after his hometown.

On January 19, 1898, a tiny village had been established. It was named Rayport after Baker's father, Ray Baker. Today, the bustling city of Rayport is the second most populous in West Aurelia. As explorers went inland to chart West Aurelia, they were surprised that only a few indigenous groups were found, despite the large amount of habitable land and food available. Baker decided that a new nation could be formed. He immediately sent ships back to Valaran to bring in more settlers.

By mid-1899, four major towns had been formed: Rayport, Griswall, Rockwell, and Riverside (in order of formation). Riverside was the furthest inland, but it was in an extremely habitable area with good soil to grow crops. It was named after the Church River which flowed through it (the Church River itself was named due to Baker's Christian background). On September 16, 1899, Baker declared that a new nation - the Republic of West Aurelia - was formed, with a population of 8129. It was immediately recognized by multiple nations due to the fact that there were no existing claims to the land. Riverside was named West Aurelia's capital.

The new nation established a largely libertarian government, focusing on the philosophy of "minimum government, maximum freedom." On November 1, 1899, a presidential election was held. Baker won in a landslide result, winning with 76% of the popular vote. The remaining 24% was split between other candidates who opposed Baker's libertarian philosophy.
