Well that's sort of funny because "there isn't" an exact answer on that very subject, many believe it was the product of differing portions of our little species adapting to different living environments after evolving a bit from the cradle, adaption to our specific habits i guess. And as such given blood types, or at least the genes responsible for them, are inherited. It all comes down to Genes, adaption to illness, location and etc.

And given we have already been capable of "crafting" fake synthetic blood for usage in transplants, It only makes sense to take it a step further and actually create a natural replicate of blood with ALL expressed traits of ALL blood types, if for nothing else to see how it reacts inside a organism. The process like any engineering exercise would likely be long, full of miscalculations and mistakes, but if it bore fruit? We would never be denied blood transfusion on the basis of donor, such a concept would cease to exist.
