We had conflict of interest legislation in Aurentina that did not prevent politicians from owning businesses. All Clause 35 does is block RP'ing ability.

Essentially they ban any companies which might get help from government, any that may have monopoly (bus company, coal for UK, arospace etc) and for good reason; a MP can not be expected to be objective if he has conflict of interest. This kind of massive wall of text would do this or just ban on anyone who has seat in another profit company.

There's also:

15. (1) No reporting public office holder shall, except as required in the exercise of his or her official powers, duties and functions,
(a) engage in employment or the practice of a profession;
(b) manage or operate a business or commercial activity;
(c) continue as, or become, a director or officer in a corporation or an organization;
(d) hold office in a union or professional association;
(e) serve as a paid consultant; or
(f) be an active partner in a partnership.

And if the person in question has no relatives?

Then that is tiny negligible number; you are talking about someone who owns a small/medium business, with no family or someone they trust to be temporary owner of the business.

You assume the worst from rich people -- which is an issue in of itself -- but forget that this law also affects businessmen and women from the middle and lower classes.

How about following change "...shall not hold office of profit. Provided nothing in this clause shall be interpreted as preventing individuals who meet other criteria specified in this part and own businesses with global profit of under US$500,000, from holding office."
That should take care of SME owners.

15. (1) No reporting public office holder shall, except as required in the exercise of his or her official powers, duties and functions,
(a) engage in employment or the practice of a profession;
(b) manage or operate a business or commercial activity;
(c) continue as, or become, a director or officer in a corporation or an organization;
(d) hold office in a union or professional association;
(e) serve as a paid consultant; or
(f) be an active partner in a partnership.

European country please, the closer to Baltonia, the better.

Then that is tiny negligible number; you are talking about someone who owns a small/medium business, with no family or someone they trust to be temporary owner of the business.

No, I was citing one simple example.

Or you have people who are simply not willing to give up their businesses, after investing time and energy into it, even to a family member. Or people whose family are involved in other professions (such as lawyers, doctors, or soldiers, just to name a few) who simply cannot take over the business. Or people whose families take over the business but then ruin it, or change it utterly from what the owner wished.

And this is just in a few seconds.

Face it, you're punishing middle class business owners for wanting to serve their country.

We had conflict of interest legislation in Aurentina that did not prevent politicians from owning business. Why can't we adopt a similar stance in Baltonia? I also think that starting off with such restrictions is rather silly when you consider that no other country in the region has similar restrictions in place.

As the author, I'd like to note that the Responsible Government Act was terribly-written and imitating it would be a bad idea.

I'd say that's reasonable. Compromise, compromise, compromise.

15. (1) No reporting public office holder shall, except as required in the exercise of his or her official powers, duties and functions,
(a) engage in employment or the practice of a profession;
(b) manage or operate a business or commercial activity;
(c) continue as, or become, a director or officer in a corporation or an organization;
(d) hold office in a union or professional association;
(e) serve as a paid consultant; or
(f) be an active partner in a partnership.

I like the idea, and appreciate your willingness to compromise.

Do we have data on the average income of businesses? If not, I'll readily agree to this.

Yes, and I'm trying to get a sense of how the area around Baltonia treats the issue, not countries across the Atlantic.

Much like how we analyzed/are analyzing other issues, like GDP, LGBT rights, healthcare, etc.

To conclude on my argument in favour of Clause 35: what matters more to a citizen, their business or their political position? If it is your business, then you are the reason clause 35 was written. If it is your political position, then it is worth giving up your business.

CTALNH, if you want to RP unrest and not the voting on bills, then participate as a non-politician citizen and business owner. You'll still RP stuff, just not the stuff you find so boring.

With due respect, source, please? I was not aware of this.

I presented you additional evidence within the qualifications of your question, and you dismissed it by shifting the goalposts from "Western" to "European".

To my knowledge we dont have average level of business income, and most countries seem to label it using employee numbers so that figure was from Canada where companies get tax break for taxable income from active businesses up to $500,000 as SME deduction.
