So, I had to put this on hold for about a month, but I'm working on it again and will probably launch it soon, in case anyone's still interested in it.

I'd rather call it "post-fantasy," actually. The idea is that magic and other supernatural practices used to be pretty widespread in Antediluvia, but they fell out of favor when scientific advances made them obsolete some four or five centuries ago. Take combustion, for example: to create fire, you would have needed a mage skilled enough to heat the air up enough to make it burst in flames. Today, you have all sorts of fuels, electric ignition, and gadgets large and small so that fire manipulation can be done by any schmuck that can turn a key, pull a trigger, or use a lighter.

Industrialisation was another turning point. Big manufacturers saw magicians as a threat to their enterprises, especially in the early days, so they started lobbying for restrictions on magic use. Long story short, the fight between tech and magic raged on for a long time, there was some nasty business on both sides, and magic all but disappeared from the Kingdom. These days, it's treated as dangerous superstition and heresy. This is one reason for abysmal relations between Antediluvia and Precambria; the latter still use magic quite much, including in their armies, which incites a lot of hate on both sides.

Of course, there are practitioners on the Antediluvian side, too, but they tend to keep quiet about it, for obvious reasons. It's rumoured that UNMETA, or Unconventional Methods and Tactics, an Antediluvian special forces brigade, recruits magic users for their operations, but this is of course vehemently denied by the military.

Interesting. Also, if you need a map, I'm totally up for making one (or even some).

I'd love that, but I've no idea how Supercentennaria looks like yet.

RP INTEREST AND FEEDBACK REQUEST
Please provide as much detail as possible.
RP's Overarching Concept: Western gritty game set in alternate 1860s with cliche alt history like CSA winning, independent Texas, and Deseret. Two IC threads: One thread for main characters situated in the area known as "the Cauldron" with a TBD set plot lead and OP guided story line and one free form IC thread for characters anywhere in the big map.
Genre/s: Western, Drama, Action, Adventure, Alternate History
Character or Faction Based: Character. Up to two w/ one in "the Cauldron"
Detailed Description: Based on Aces & Eights: Shattered Frontier, an old-school western RPG.
http://www.kenzerco.com/aces_n_eights/index.html
1804 – US Senate ratifies Louisiana purchase

The United States Senate ratifies a treaty with France securing the latter’s North American holdings adjacent to that of the young republic. Known as the Louisiana Purchase, this act opened up a vast frontier that would turn America’s attention westward.

September 1821 – Mexican independence

Much as the United States cast off her European master, Mexico achieved independence from Spain. However, Mexico was not the inheritor of a democratic tradition dating back to the Magna Carta and would be plagued by lack of good governance. Unstable and fractious leadership would leave her weak and vulnerable.

1829 – USA attempts to purchase Texas

Driven in part by emerging sectional politics, the United States attempts to extend her territory by purchasing the Mexican Department of Tejas. Though rebuffed, a sizeable number of her citizens had already settled in the region.

1836 - Texas declares independence

Frustrated by increasingly meddlesome interference in their affairs with no tangible benefit, the residents of Texas declare their independence. Though instigated by American settlers and their descendants, the movement has broad support even amongst native Tejanos.

1838-39 Aroostock War

The War of 1812 failed to demark the precise boundaries between Canada and the United States that in time led to a confrontation between Maine and New Brunswick over property rights. This conflict escalated drawing in both British and American regular forces. The former quickly gained the upper hand over the inexperienced Americans. This conflict was settled through the Webster-Ashburn treaty which finally put to bed the last vestiges of the Revolutionary War of 1776.

1844 – Henry Clay (Whig) elected President

Henry Clay was elected as the 11th President of the United States by a razor-thin margin, in large part due to the splinter candidacy of John Tyler. Clay’s chief aim was to mediate the growing sectional tensions and it is generally agreed that in this he succeeded. A notable accomplishment to this end was the purchase of Cuba from the Spanish crown.

October 1845 - Texas officially independent

After a decade of conflict during which Mexican dictator Santa Anna failed to decisively end the rebellion and the United States disavowed interest in annexation, Mexico finally succumbed to the futility of retaining the region and through British, French and American emissaries entered into negotiations to settle the conflict. On October 13, 1845 the Republic of Texas entered the international stage.

1844 Election Map

November 1845 – California Republic declares independence

Buoyed by the recent Texican secession, American settlers around San Francisco Bay in the Mexican District of Alta California establish the California Republic and declare their independence from Mexico. Californios in the Los Angeles region do not support the Anglos and Mexican forces are dispatched to prevent further dissolution of the country.

January 1847 – Republic of California signs truce and soon asks for admission to US

After the indecisive Battle of San Luis Obispo, the California Republic and Mexico sign the Truce of Monterrey. Though not recognized as a sovereign nation, the Republic of California had achieved de facto independence. Her residents were, however, overwhelmingly in favor of annexation by the United States.

1846 – Brigham Young leads Mormons to Great Salt Lake

Fleeing sustained harassment, Brigham Young leads his Mormon congregation on an arduous trek to the Great Salt Lake in hopes of settling in a region where they can practice their faith without invoking the ire of their neighbors.

1848 – Lewis Cass (Democrat) elected President

The election of 1848 again witnessed splintering of the major parties along the slavery issue. This time it would be to the Whigs detriment as the Free Republic party coalesced from its ranks to run former President Van Buren as their Candidate. The election was even closer than 1844’s as frontrunner Lewis Cass failed to gain a majority of electoral votes leading to the first instance of the President being chosen by the House of Representatives.★

Awesome. Only thing I have in mind is that there's a forest called the Great Forest between the countries. Yes, I used all my powers of imagination to come up with that. That's where our unit fights. And the frontline is stupid long, like thousands of klicks.

So I'm writing the OP for the above RP of mine, and I'm creeping myself out with my own writing. I went out for a cigarette, and actually got a bit scared in my dark kitchen. I should probably go to sleep.

Maybe. Still pretty miffed at the lack of ranged weapons, though. Might as well ban stones too. :/

It's best to just agree to disagree on that one right now.

It is retconned a bit in my current draft though. There are some such weapons, but they're primarily used in activities like hunting, not for combat.

That, I can still accept. Projectile weapons were commonly used by people of lower status in pre-modern combat, so I can live with that. It's the old canon where they're magically whitewashed that rustled my jimmies. :D

Yeah, I've had some time to think of some old things that might be better off changed. It makes more sense for there to be projectile weapons that can put down a deer or something even if they won't do much against an energy shield, to put an example, rather than nothing at all. That state of affairs (the absolute lack of ranged weaponry) was in great part what inspired the whole thing, though, which in hindsight is probably why I kept it back then.

I've also changed some other stuff, like replacing the three classes with a point distribution system.

Just a general question to those who care to answer:

When it comes to an RP, do you prefer classes, a point system, or neither?

Classes, but only a couple and they must be both precise and pretty vague.

It depends. Classes are clearer in regards to what you can and can't do, but in that regard they are also more restrictive than a point system.

I personally prefer classes, but the point system seems to be more used around here. Not that I've seen either a lot. As far as I can see, most people don't use either system. :P
