As for II, join a mil-realism thread and ask them for advice on how to RP Modern wars.

I feel worse for the natives. Seeing a bunch of ass-naked Russians running around on the beach, drunk on more Vodka than a normal man sees in an entire lifetime.

The military realism threads are full of techwank with little to no attention paid to actually practical matters. Fighting a war is not just about equipment, RPing one is even less.

Trust me, realwank is infinitely worse. Techwank allows fun because it enables you to overwhelm people with m-muh tech.
Realwank = no fun allowed.
Mmm, to a degree. Realwank is less prevalent the further back in history you go, which is admittedly a large part of the reason I tend to stay away from the modern world.
Techwank is universally annoying though.

What's realwank?
A person in the milwank thread once told me that infantry fighting vehicles are pointless, because tank desanting exists. Yeah.

Example of realwank;
"What if we were to have the Angles win the battle of Hastings?"
"Impossible, Harold was a bad commander and the weather judging by historical accounts did not favour him and William the Conqueror had a higher IQ judging by his later rule and examinations of his skull and similar battles that took place that can be compared were won by the Norman equivalent... <etc. etc.> therefore it's completely and utterly impossible and you should give up."
"So... what if we had them lose the battle of Stamford-"
"Also completely impossible because archaeological excavations have proved that the bridge would have collapsed should fighting have gone the other way anyway and numbers and surprise favoured the Saxons who were also better suited and their general at the time was in better health than the Viking one who also led a fractured army that could never have won... <etc. etc.> so that's ridiculous and you should stop trying already."
"Well... let's change the subject. What if, I dunno, Piludski happened to be educated at a different school-"
<insert self-righteous defence of what would have happened and why anything deviating from it is heresy, impossibility and backed up by indisputable untouchable evidence>
And so on. Basically making everything impossible and going waaaay too far in realism.

Oh, that. I hate that, didn't know it had a name.
Edit: You do need some of that to balance out axiswankers, though.

Admittedly it's failure was partly my own fault and partly down to poor execution, but I've found myself with more spare time lately and figured this would be as good as any place to get back into RPing.

Anglo-Saxon (or whatever he was called) was a good example of realwank.
Uh, as in, was there someone who did that, or do you mean in my example? My example was referring to the historical Anglo-Saxons of England...
