I don't even really remember a Non-Christian running. You'll hear some people (usually conservatives) claiming the opposite candidate is "Non-Christian," like in Obama's case, but that has nothing to do with votes or not.

Kind of speaks for itself. "Non-christian" meaning "someone that shouldn' t be in position X", and the whole oaths by god and all that (which is still here in the Netherlands, too, though not compulsory).

I personally vote based on the persons policies, religion matters not. If your policies line up with what I believe and value, you get my vote.

Since most presidents have been Christian (or deist.) they've never had any objections. If a Non-Christian became president, I'm certain they would be able to swear an oath on their own holy book, like a Non-Christian senator (I recall something like that.)

Either case, it's simply tradition. Nothing theocratic.

@Wolfie yeah that.

And I found another web comic about how ignorant we are about geography. On with my story about the Swede then:

Whenever I am forced to sit next to you for a long period of time, I'll talk to you. So blah blah blah found out he was from Sweden and all that and he proceeds to tell me that we need to reform our educational system and teach more about European geography because he claimed some American couldn't tell the difference between Sweden and Switzerland.

I get tired of him going on and decide to ask him what countries lie in South America. "Um, American colonies and territories?" :eyebrow: What? I should have called my Brazilian friend and told her XD

Well, in the US they should be taught more about Europe, and the rest of the world in general.

America is enormous. We have our own geography to worry about. Not saying that you are wrong, just that America is bigger and we have more to learn about our own land mass that European students do about their countries. Geography wise anyway.

Here in Singapore one of my British classmates asked me why I couldn't just drive to New York when I explained I had only been there once. He'd been to France several times after all. The difference being, New York is 900 miles from where I live. One does not simply drive that distance.

@tilt. Somewhat. My beliefs are chafing as I get more experience and get out from under my parents

At this point, we've pretty much proven that not only can evolution happen, it pretty much must happen since it's basically impossible to prevent it from happening.

That's why I said Geography, not history. They are often grouped together, but are different.

But I do wholeheartedly agree with you. World geography is only required for one year in high school but you have to take three other US history and geography courses. Maybe make them even, two and two? I don't know.

I remember having a history book on the middle ages for school.

We should be learning more about Europe simply because that's where the majority of us originated from.

Yeah, the only thing I remember about the Dutch is where a few of their colonies were located, same with Spain and Portugal.

I remember a lot of British and French history because it's intertwined with ours. In other words, you're only taught what's relevant to North America. I highly doubt European schools are taught every detail of Canada, Mexico, and US history like we are.

Every detail? We learned about Mexican settlement, Canadian independence, Aztec culture, all that stuff. Europeans learn mostly about Europe (America is a big influence on the world) and American about North America

Exactly.

The bottom line is, we are taught what is relevant to our respective regions. Australia was barely mentioned at all in my US history books but was covered in detail in World History. We just require more American history than anything else and World History is thrown to the side.

Exactly, European history is relevant to Europe. I'd appreciate more world geography but most Americans tend to view it like you view others expecting you to speak their language. "We don't live there, it has no affect on us." but that's the same attitudes that led to both world wars.

Clinton was not. I'm not sure what Obama is. I really hadn't noticed that until you pointed it out. I just know that our founders were Christian and that we claim to be a "Christian Nation." Or are we? What about the Middle East? The leaders of most countries there have to be Muslim, why? Because they are a Muslim nation. Besides, it's all about who the people elect here.
