"The difference between a weak and a strong nation is how the people follow the law. If you need men with rifles to make most people to follow the law, your nation is week. If all you need is a sign or a man in a suit to make most people follow the law, your nation is strong. To chain the beast that is man with weapons is easy. To do the same with lines and the ground, red pieces of metal on metal poles and expensive attire? That's a sign of strength, because if people bow before your signs and lines and suits, that's because they're too terrified to imagine seeing your guns pointed at them."

"Has it occurred to you morons that criminals, being outside of the law do not obey the laws regardless of how they are passed, set down or enforced? That's kind of why they're called criminals. You have no righteous basis to punish law abiding Americans to try and 'curtail criminals'." - Senator Reinhold Holzknecht, 2109

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is a genuine workers' state in which all the people are completely liberated from exploitation and oppression. The workers, peasants, soldiers and intellectuals are the true masters of their destiny and are in a unique position to defend their interests.

"The antithesis of Randian Heroes are probably the 'heroes' here. They're too arrogant and manipulative (Ms. Zorilla) or they are visibly meek (Tomoko). They wipe their hands clean like Pilatos (Józef Papp) or they agonize and writhe in their doubt and guilt (Sachi 56011). They take the third actions and observe, as bystanders with a post (Col. Martínez Sosa), as passive collaborators (Mélanie and Mama), and as investigators or introspective people (the Anthropologist and the Office Lady).

Only a handful have a sense of direction, the rest are infinitely lost in a world of perceptions that has a blindfolded Buddha to guide them. They take comfort in their pride, or insecurity, in their hypocritical lies or acidic sincerity meant to harm, in their lascivious nature, and in their need to control the world around them in the way they want to and leashed only by the norms and necessities of social life. Physically the grand majority is so-so more or less, with the exception of Gloría being very sexy and Herrera being ugly.

They most certainly have freedom. They can be free to interact with their surrounding in the way they see fit; but they're chained to their need to interact with others to attain their goals, to get affection, to feel protection, to get a paycheck and eat, to promote a personal goal at times...this could be biological altruism or biological egoism meant to carry on their gene pool, it's never really put in detail. Either way, association with others assures some form of self-preservation. It's important to note that a swallow doesn't make a Summer, as a result egoism goes down the drain as a base. It's just a catalyzer in a surrounding that requires circumstances which often cover the entire being of the protagonists. 'Collectivism' is more obvious, however it's also just a catalyzer of human activity depending on the perspective. Though there's no real definable base.

They can get out mentally if they want but they're ultimately a unit and creation of the cyclical society that made them, most will probably be forgotten in decades after their lifetime but it's alright because nothing is forever.

On a curious note though all are culturally collectivist, most aren't as generous as a Randian hero for whatever reason it be. And they all peruse homeostasis, so in a sense they all peruse happiness as well. But they're socially interconnected and they use this to live; rose-tinted glasses will say they help each other and dark ones will see them fucking themselves and each other in a never-ending loop of use, abuse, and sadomasochism. Being more collectivist will only enhance their inter-dependency. Being more individualist, to extremes, would only allow the dominants to hold the whip. It happens either way.

The good thing is that in the end of the story they can all do the Henry Tsukamoto dance together. Notably only José and Tomoko hold hands though. "

"In this century, communists and fascists are equally likely to be overthrown first, then the autocratic monarchy, then the corrupt bureaucratic dictatorship, then the constitutional monarchy. The least likely government to be overthrown is a republic, which we are. The fact that we are founded on Christian values helps a lot. We are essentially immune from government collapse, though we were once divided into a capitalist east and a communist west.
