Indeed. In addition to useful when someone like Gren doesn't want to be referred to by a gendered pronoun, it also gives us something to use when gender is unspecified/uncertain. It also avoids the whole "male as default" issue on the internet.

1. Sex is not gender.
2. I'm aware. However, all I care about is not being beaten, being denied a job for who I am, and not being referred to with the wrong pronouns.
3. No its not. See my post in response to his.
So being beaten and not getting a job is the same as being referred to by the wrong name?
