Guys, Ethel does have a point.

You're (and to some extent I was, too) picking at him and saying "nuh uh" to what he is saying and contradicting him. Which is undoubtedly making things worse.

I think self criticism is great. The problem I see here is that youre criticising the wrong things. You should be criticising how much energy you put into being miserable.

That may be true in some cases, but betterment can also be interpreted as refusal to accept.
