I was under the impression that dreams had zero meaning, and any coherence within them was artificial.

Nope, actually, those happen when I dream of dark alleys and people are throwing shit at me - from broken bottles, to kitchen utensils and shooting with a pistol near my feet. Also, while running away people keep following you in an angry mob and whoever you ask for help along the way decides to ignore you.
