I was a History major so I guess I am talking about my specific major. But I am not sure about engineering or other tech fields. I do know they make you do projects, a lot.

The ambition might have never existed in the first place. The system can't easily motivate a person with no motivation.

It's mostly because teachers and parents don't care. If children do not see their parents pushing them or their teachers being motivators to succeed; how do we expect them to actually succeed?!

Not everyone of us is an introvert who can bootstrap their way into school; some of us are extroverts or fall somewhere in the middle, so motivation from the outside is very important too.

While I mostly agree, self-motivation does play some part. You can't be motivated by teachers and parents if you do not motivate yourself.

I've lost that ability.

Why not just give major projects and do away with the test except for one or two; instead of mortifying over every. little. concept.

Rote doesn't work, that's how we're being taught here in the US.

I wouldn't say it doesn't work, but America doesn't have the culture of China, Korea, or Japan where rote works. I think it's the anti-intellectualism pushed by gangs and Evangelical Christians that cause America's shortcomings.

Now, Evangelism is not that bad across the board. I think its mostly the culture which children grow up in as well as the values.

Anti-intellectualism can also be espoused by atheists. so remember that.
