Why not just give major projects and do away with the test except for one or two; instead of mortifying over every. little. concept.

Rote doesn't work, that's how we're being taught here in the US.

That is what should be mandated. The small quizes are just to make sure basics are held down pat. Rote works, it's just that the way it is done in the States seems to not work. Rote is to only be limited to basics.

Projects is to see how far the student can take such basic knowledge. And weighted marking is key. Knowledge is important, but ability to expand on such knowledge is valued greater.

Memorization is important, sure. But memorization without the critical thinking element is empty and practically worthless except to get a good grade.

Or you could do what I did in High School, sleep in every class, get A's on every test, never do homework, and still wind up 5th out of 143 in my class.

I wasn't pushed to use my skills until college, really. When I got into college it was wonderful to get these assignments that other students were scratching their heads and I could finish them well because of my ability to connect and grasp two seemingly unrelated concepts and my insight into the material. I enjoyed it.

I wouldn't say it doesn't work, but America doesn't have the culture of China, Korea, or Japan where rote works. I think it's the anti-intellectualism pushed by gangs and Evangelical Christians that cause America's shortcomings.

It's mostly because teachers and parents don't care. If children do not see their parents pushing them or their teachers being motivators to succeed; how do we expect them to actually succeed?!

Not everyone of us is an introvert who can bootstrap their way into school; some of us are extroverts or fall somewhere in the middle, so motivation from the outside is very important too.
