THANK YOU!
I hated it when I was made to learn shit just to pass. I got Bs and Cs because of it on some of my subjects, as I am an analyzer, not a regurgitation machine.
All that 'matters' is the grade, but what really it all matters on understanding, which my teacher asks everyday.

Memorization is important, sure. But memorization without the critical thinking element is empty and practically worthless except to get a good grade.

My very first three were Bunun (Taiwanese Aboriginal), Mandarin and Japanese(dad). But I can also speak Cantonese, Hokkien and Vietnamese, and a few other languages. Dropped pursuit of a few to accommodate for Arabic. ^^

When you're working with the Japanese and Chinese writing systems, which encompass rhetoric, philosophy and language, memorization is everything.

And quit encouraging regurgitation! So many people in my grade can recite information at the drop of a hat but they don't get it.

It's more of give the student the knowledge. Test once (rote).See if they have absorbed the knowledge. Next, give a project. This project is to essentially give the student the ability to expand on the knowledge (critical thinking).
Weighted evaluations will have the project be the main thing being evaluated.

Exactly, and the objective method of grading by numbers doesn't accomodate critical thinking. You start trying to play by the system and you stop focusing on what matters.
