Yes, that's true, but it's hard to measure the significance of the differences if you don't know the language. My friend was telling me about the difference between Austrian and German, even though Austrian is still German.

I'm a stickler for context. With a programming language I can follow set standards or certain paradigms. With another verbal language I feel constantly distracted by going off on divergent tangents on differences between dialects, because I feel I need to know those contextual differences, if I don't I don't feel I'm fully grasping the language.
