It's playable. It just had, in my opinion, a pretty shittastic cast of characters and a fairly bad story. What killed it, however, was the munitioning and magic draw system.

People have a lot of criticism of FFVII too, but I don't see a of of them, or didn't, because it was my first RPG.

No, I have it on Steam. It's mainly that Darkest hour slowed troop movement and increased the importance of airpower from HoI 2, and neither of those works that well with the WWI scenario.
