"1966. The Cold War still raging and Las Palmeras enters the World Cup, it didn't even make it out of the Regional Phase...but it still kicked out the USA in the midst of a brief naval confrontation in which a patrol boat was damaged. We won 1-0.

1975. In a 'Friendly' match after the consumed PRLP-Soviet split (in which a high ranking Soviet official referred to the then Premier as a 'lackey' of the Americans and Chinese), we beat the Soviets in a penalty ending.

1989. Tensions in the Cold War eased, and an incident involving Argentine beef and Palmeran electronics led to a match a few days later that resulted in a 2-1 victory for the People's Republic.

2009. A group of students didn't get a place to stay in Japan due to 'No Foreigner' signs, something that was televised on the news here. A week later in a 'Friendly' training mach, the PRLP's team beat the Japanese...4 to 0. And in a scene reminiscent to the Cold War, the team marched out without celebrating much.

When it comes to frivolous or more serious issues, it seems that Football rewards us. Odd considering we're normally sub-par when it comes to football."

"Every life we lose, every life we take, is the premature ending of a decades-long story. For every man that dies, a child is orphaned, a wife is widowed. Every life lost means good deeds that will never be done; laughter that will never sound; thoughts that never will be thought; songs, never sung; love, forever lost. "Breaking up with somebody means getting hurt. As a result, revenge is common. It consists of women or men suddenly slapping the rear-end of their ex. Traditionally it's stabbing them in the buttocks, but technically that's illegal...so 'slaps' are seen as normal. However aggression is prized to an extent. Murder rates are over 16 times higher than at home, and a good number are due to sheer aggression.

The 'minimal' response is most likely verbal aggression in most islands. Only Bahía Rica is 'calm' because people there give the cold shoulder from what I heard. In the event of a serious affront, verbal aggression will occur and it's expected. As a nationalized Palmeran, I have to culturalize myself.

Palmerans are stereotypically seen as cold and pushy by their Latin American neighbors and ungrateful by the Spanish. The Americans see them as 'exotic' sometimes. What's true is that they're visibly rancorous...though some people say that the 'No Foreigners' signs were ways of saying that problems with translations shouldn't be bothered with or that they're due to rude behavior from tourists. Either way, since 2009 certain Palmerans have been subtly badmouthing the tourist industry in hopes that tourism decreases there.

I don't think they'll let people live it down...then again it could just be that the PRLP has been more exposed to the Chinese in a large extent since 1978, and that whatever Big Pen-Sister (China) says about Japan must be true."

Est stole the words from my mouth. @Marshal Briggs/GWO.

"Okay, how much do we got?"

"Standard. Three platoons of infantry, a squadron of infantry fighting vehicles, a squadron of attack helicopters and a mortar battery."

"... Uh, command knows this is just a reported sighting of a were-bear coming in from Arcadia, right?"

"Yeah, they do. That's why we have a standard unit here."

"Don't silver bullets-"

"Most of the things we deal with just get angry when you shoot them once. They only get dead when you shoot them lots. Hence, standard unit composition."

"... Okay, now I'm a little scared of what this thing can do."

"Good. That means you might empty your whole clip into it before it kills you. Most guys usually think half can cut it and stop shooting after that. It usually doesn't cut it."

"What if... What? No, not a chance. If the Japanese had refused to surrender, the Allies, chiefly the Americans, would have enacted the invasion plans they had already drawn up. They would have implemented Operation Downfall and launched the conventional invasion of the Japanese homeland. This idea that if Japan had just "never quit," they would have had this miraculous second wind is simply absurd. The only things which would have changed would have been the date of Japan's final collapse, and the casualty figures on both sides."

"That happened here, the dreaded Operation Downfall. Coronet was brutal, bloody and long. The Californians lost more Marines in the first six hours on Honshu then they had through out the entire Adrianic War. The Battle of the Home Islands was the single longest, bloodiest campaign in the history of the Federated States of California and the White Sun Empire both. Men were clambering over the bodies of their comrades, their enemies, of women, children, and the old alike, and they didn't run, they all of them fought like cornered rats with the strength of demons until they could fight no more. Yes they lost, but it was a long and blood soaked path to ruin." - Sir Alexander Yordanov, knows a surprising amount about other worlds despite having never left his own.

"The global economic downturns of the 1930s put a great strain on all nations, and gave rise to some frightening social and political movements. Even in Bereia, where the recovery began quickly by comparison to many nations, the rise of Socialist and Fascist factions in many places was alarming. For several months in 1935, a general uprising was feared. Rear-Admiral Clint How drew up highly detailed plans for the use of U.S. troops and naval forces in suppression of a suspected march on the capital by either Fascists or a left-wing coalition of forces. His plans were based on at least partially completed ideas for the evacuation of the President, but were much more audacious in scope. A number of warships, ranging in size from battleships to Coast Guard patrol boats, a large force, were to be stationed offshore. With them would be at least a regiment of Marines as a landing force. If the plan were put into force, the Coast Guard boats would land the Marines to help local authorities and thereafter would be used securing inland waterways. The larger ships would be used in support.

Upon presenting his plans to the Secretary of War, he was asked how he would propose to hide such a large and extensive movement of forces from the public. His answer? An exhibition. Have an impressive showing of the Republic's military muscle for the people to see and be proud of, and to take everybody's minds from the bad economy. Sail some ships in to be seen and toured by folks in the local area in a big week-long event. Keep them from the ships holding the landing forces, and all will be well. He also suggested Army maneuvers be held nearby at the same time.

The plan went perfectly, with some small additions. Admiral How was a "gunwagon admiral," and believed in battleships as the main striking arm of the Fleet forces. A few more modern minds in the War Department managed to get some changes made. Two carriers, the aging
Godard and the almost brand new Warden, were included.

In the end, the show of force proved to be unnecessary. There was no march on the capital, no general uprising, and the recovery continued apace. Even so, the people had liked it. They wanted it repeated the next year, and the next, and the next. Fleet Week was born.

These days, tens of thousands flock to the coastline each year to see the mighty warships and support forces of Home Fleet, together with other forces, the Coast Guard, the Marines, and even a handful of foreign vessels once in a while. They have a great time and boost the local economy, most never realizing the whole thing would never have been had it not been for a war scare."

"I want you to imagine the American* Revolution, the Bereian Civil War, and the Birkanian Revolution all at once, and I want you to imagine both sides shouting the American ideals that they're both the 'good guys', fighting with the same ferocity as the Bereians, and with the same unabashed inhumanity as the Birkanians. Imagining it? Congratulations, you just pictured the Russo-Spanish Revolution or depending on the outside view, the Imperial Civil War. All of that, in only three years." - Sir Alexander Yordanov on the Russo-Spanish Revolution, a view commonly agreed with that it was certainly not the Empire's best time.

*Not those ones.

"The Imperial Civil War, which is the more fitting name, saw vast changes to the political landscape of the world. The Esto-Alisonian Empire which for more than two hundred years had stood as a world power, was no more. It had effectively ceased to exist, the Republic of Alisonia was born, the Republic of Talma was born, the world no longer lived in fear of the Imperials, the baton which Britannia had passed to the Californians was basically thrown at them from the Imperial perspective. But over all? The most resounding change was within the former Empire itself. The Imperial peoples for the very first time in over ten thousand years had something they had been taught since time immemorial was evil... Freedom. Which is why it is very unsurprising that the Alisionians fought very nearly to the last man and child in the Reclamatiom, they weren't fighting for a monarch, or some vague deity, they fought for their very freedoms." - Cornelius Maximilian

"Russia's massive invasion of Germany and Eastern Europe was basically Stalin trying to intimidate the West with the Soviet Union's vast military power, to which the atomic bombs used on Japan basically amounted to America saying "Yeah? Cool story, bro." Each was trying to intimidate the other, and the Americans won. There is a reason the Soviets made it such a point to get the bomb."
