Trust me. I'm from a nonpartisan political system. Let me put this in more familiar terms using some FPS game styles I'm sure you've enjoyed. One party political systems are like a team deathmatch where the other team never shows up. Everyone just kind of runs around idly while the admin bans people they don't like. Nothing really gets done, but because there's no obvious conflict people mistake it for progress or victory. Debates are quickly stifled because the admin doesn't like that, and anyone who tries to protest that gets banned. It sucks.

Partisan politics is like a proper team deathmatch. There's one or more teams and everyone picks their favorite and wishes death on all the others. Winners have fun and the losers cry and plot their vengeance. Life moves on. Sometimes one team gets all the good players and wins again and again and again until the other teams drop out and it becomes a one party system. Other times there are draws and periods of stalemates. It really feeds in to people's tribal instincts so it works out most of the time if your political views are kind of average.

Then, there's nonpartisan politics. There's no teams. It's just a bloody deathmatch. Everyone is fighting everyone else. Instead of two groups fighting each other, everyone is trying to destroy everyone else. There's brief alliances that are quickly torn apart once immediate threats are defeated. As a whole though, everyone's out to get everyone else in the match. No mercy to be found. That's what nonpartisan politics are like. One a firefight broke out between two potential candidates for a sanitation council seat in a rather small city. Yeah, sanitation council.
