"So now that we've agreed that the Earth is warming naturally(a process no doubt being aided by the massive levels of carbon dioxide humanity pumps out), our next point of contention is the concept that it is not a threat because it is slow. Droughts can last for years, and are not any less threatening because of it. But this isn't a lack of water, this is a possible rise in sea level, so what could go wrong?
Easy. Let's go to a Cydysa hit by global warming.
A great many scientists believe that the sea level could rise several feet this century; we'll go with a generic scale, that the sea will rise 10 feet every fifty years. This is a high-ish number according to scientists- some estimate as low as five feet in 100 years- but we'll go with 10 feet every half-century.
So, for our tour, we'll go west to east, starting in Eastminster and ending in Ealford, covering central Cydysa and most of what people associate with the city.
Now- beginning in 2050, with a 10 foot sea level rise, let's look at the big tourist sites, shall we? Maybe tour the government areas before heading over to Larkhall to see Waterloo Station and the Cydysa Eye, crossing them across the River Hexham into Fengate, back across the river to Dulham, and then onto Ealford.
So, after passing by the high-and-dry Saundringham Palace, we head over to Whitehall and the Houses of Parliament and Eastminster Abbey on the banks of the Hexham. And they all look pretty dry.. except the road that runs past Parliament, Abdington Bank Road, is under for about 750 feet, the water having flooded the Alexandra Tower Gardens. But that's not too much, the area still functions, right?
So because we can't get to Lambeth Bridge we have to take Eastminster Bridge, which would have been more convenient anyways, and here we see trouble. Waterloo Station is dry, but, well, the Cydysa Eye is closed because there's no way to access it without swimming. Darn.
So we start heading towards the bridges we could take to Fengate, preferably the Millenium since that's pedestrians only, and we're having a bit of a time getting there without swimming. The bridges are dry, but there's a ring of flooding going from Hopton Road to Kensington Lane back near Eastminster, in fact, most of Larkhall and much of inland Dulham are rather soggy right now- strangely the banks are still dry. Funny world, eh?
Anyways, taking the elevated highway we can stay above water long enough to safely get to Fengate, where everything is very dry. Saint Peter's Cathedral, 30 Saint Mary's Axe, the Tower of Cydysa and Tower Bridge... so let's head back towards Dulham to see the tallest building in Cydysa and the Country, the Cydysa Shard.
Which is doing fine. But the Cydysa City Hall down on the banks of the Hexham is now an island in the Hexham. Hmm.
So now we go for a bit towards where the 2012 Olympics were hosted, to see the O2. And on the other side of the Hexham, Deptford is pretty much submerged, the skyscrapers poking out. In fact, on this side of the river in Ealford, the O2 is a very large, white island.
Well... hm. That's not good, but, well, it's livable, now isn't it?
So let's go to 2200. 20 feet higher.
Now, by this point Saint Charles' Park is under water, including the central feature of the park, Saundringham Palace and the Alexandra Memorial, meaning that the Royal Family has evacuated Cydysa. So getting on a boat, we can get through the park and take a lovely little tour of the canals of Eastminster. At this point Whitehall, Eastminster Abbey, and the Palace of Eastminster are one or more islands, and boating up Abdington Bank Road for a bit we get to Trafalgar Square, where water is lapping up around the Column. So now we can simply sail from the canals into the Hexham to see the Cydysa Eye, strangest of islands, and the looming roof of Waterloo Station. So, obviously the station won't work as a station any more, but, hey, we can take shelter on the roof?
So again we start heading to Fengate, on a nice little gondola this time, and Larkhall and Dulham are pretty effectively under the Hexham. Sorry, anybody living in a full two inner districts of Cydysa. Oh, and if you look to your right, you can see the tower of what used to be the Cydysa Modern Art Museum. I hope there wasn't anything.. too valuable... in there.
But at least, we see as we disembark, that Saint Peter's Cathedral is dry, that the business area of Fengate is dry. The Tower of Cydysa, Tower Bridge, and the Shard are all, well, closed due to water damage.
So now the Hexham flares into a nice little inlet as we head towards the O2 Island and from here all you can really see is open ocean out to the east.
Now, that's only twenty feet and only one, maybe two if you count Isling Circus, districts of central Cydysa are even intact following a 20 foot rise in sea level. Now keep in mind that the capital of the province I run, Ijroojerdam, is even lower- the city's entirely inundated after a 10 foot rise, excluding about three blocks in the very center of what's called "On the Dam", that is, the dam on the River Ijroojer for which the city is named. That's not much for 11 million people. And at 20 feet? The city is rows upon rows of rooftops. Nothing more.
But by 20 feet, 14 provinces with their capitals on or near the coasts have lost them partially or wholly. For those of you who can't count, that's 14 out of 22, which is a majority. By that time, at least one province, Meerselen, has basically ceased to exist, other than a small inland bit that's lightly populated compared to the rest of the province. If the sea level rises, 6 out of Ruridova's ten largest cities will be flooded.
70 percent of this nation's population lives on the water, and 80% of its trade is on water. But sea level rise will have other problems.
One, it will correspond to a rise in temperature- slowly, crops will stop growing in their current areas and start growing further north. The salt water will begin to fill in aquifers, leaving them unsuitable for use for growing crops or raising livestock, or human use, without desalinization.
And we're only talking about one nation.
But what about the nations that couldn't afford the things Ruridova can? One of the regions of Ranistan, a region with a population of 500 million, is in the same situation as Meerselen Province- except Meerselen only has a population of 31 million. Nations afflicted by chronic poverty would be hit even worse.
And despite all these effects, global warming is either dismissed as hokum(by the same people who dismiss evolution and the big bang and germ theory, and for much the same reasons) or used as a can to kick down the road. All we seem to be able to do about it is squabble. Which is bad, because it means we're not working on solving the problem, or slowing it down. And if human history is any sign, then Meerselen Province will already be flooded, inner Cydysa already abandoned, 14 provinces without capitals, 59 million people evicted from six cities alone, not counting hundreds of other cities, or any other nation, only Ruridova, when we finally realize that plugging our fingers in our ears will not make it go away."

- Governor of Meerselen Province and chairwoman of the Green Party Margaretha van Zwarte
Республіка Рюрідова - Королівство Вілкія
"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you invited me in; I needed clothes and you clothed me; I was sick and you looked after me; I was in prison and you came to visit me... Truly, whatever you did for one of the least of my brothers and sisters, you did for me."

"I wish to take a moment to point out to you, Senator, that under the Safe Harbors Act, any sapient non-human being who lawfully seeks asylum in this Republic is to be allowed entry, and that a request for extradition in such a case is generally refused unless a competent investigation uncovers sufficient reason to do otherwise. That you find these people "creepy" is not sufficient reason under the law, thought it may well be sufficient reason for somebody else to be sitting in that seat after the next elections."

"Here, there is no good. The republicans are corrupt; the fascists are cruel; the communists are murderous; the monarchists are impressive. We the Vulpines have given up; good governance, it seems, is our greatest weakness."

- the Gospel of Matthew, 25:35-40
