Mental Illnesses. I was raised to think they're for teh crayzees. It's a stereotype I'm struggling to dissect and dispel... for reason. But.. still, it remains. What are your thoughts on "teh crayzees" and their anguish?

Never thought of mental illnesses according to that stereotype. Great-grandma suffered from Alzheimer's for the last four years until her passing; was very difficult for us in the family, and even more difficult for her. I can only hope that no one else in the family will have it again.

Ah... a great grandmother of mine had Alzheimer's. My mother explained that she was, "going crazy." So I reacted according to that interpretation which was, in hindsight, incredibly patronizing and dickish. Fuck younger me.

I can understand not wishing it upon anyone else. I wonder what it's like for the afflicted... are they aware of the disconnect?

I know I am when I feel a cloud of depression coming on. I'm Bipolar and... being aware of a disconnection from reality is... strange, to say the least. I don't feel crazy but what other word do I use to describe it? If awareness of Alzheimer's is like awareness of Bipolar 2 then it must be torture for the person. I would definitely not wish that on someone else. It's scary shit.

I don't really know what you mean here. Maintaining a friendship with him is easy, as he is medicated for his condition and can function like a normal human being.

Her boyfriend beats her senseless every other week, isn't allowed in the house and I told them straight up if I saw his face I would beat it in because no one is allowed to touch my mommy. He was in the car, which was fine... then he came in the house so we had a screaming match.

I feel very sorry for you and I wish you all the luck in dealing with your own problems. But yes, my great-grandma seemed to have a very, very strange variety of Alzheimer's... she could always remember very, very distant facts or key, essential details. For example, she always recognized me when I came to visit her, but she could never remember if her husband was dead or not. He's been dead since 1991. However, she could perfectly, in vivid detail, tell stories of her youth and childhood.

I think it would be helpful for people with mental illnesses, if it wasn't a fad for teens to self-diagnose themselves with various disorders and placing it in their NS sig.

That does get rather annoying, I agree. I recall a young girl I met explaining all her mental self-"diagnoses" and all I could think was, "this chick wants to be crazy? That fucking crayzee!"

I don't understand why people want a diagnosis of mental differences... it seems rather silly to me.
Like "Ohmygosh, I haz Assburger's" "Did you get evaluated by a trained professional?" "No, but, like, it's totally me, and I'm on the internet, everybody has it!"
Of course, that's the example I use because it's the one that annoys me the most, but why would anybody willingly "self-diagnose" ADHD, Autism, or anything else if they look at the downsides to each of them?
