If you want to shoot with a gun, you do that at your local gun-club, where the weapons are safely locked away.

Its not that bad here, at least in most places, its just that if you want to defend yourself, would you not want the best possible means with which to do so?

Knives can be dodged, and assholes on PCP can shrug off stab wounds. Not to mention that short of having a throwing knife, and the necessary skills to use it, a knife inherently puts you IN range of your attacker, instead of outside it. Which is counterproductive to self-defense.
