Warzones usualy arnt nice places no. But I know of worse places in the world then Sryia. In any case, Damascus still ahs some pretty cool histocal sites untouched by the violence, and then there is Antioch which may or may not sitll have its large churches intact, and if we ever get in trouble: Run like hell to the russian naval base at Tartus.
Besides, it would be good for our nation to try to establish a foreign policy. What better way then to visit the literal center of the action? Buisness and tourism (discount cause nobody is going to overcharge us for staying in a warzone)=win win.
And the nice thing about authoritarian regimes is that if they want you to be safe, you will be safe
