Last night I had a dream that I was 45 years old. I'd done what, at the moment, is my plan - go to culinary school, work as a chef, and finally open my own restaurant. I had just done that in my dream, opened up my restaurant after working as a head chef for 10 years. But I was unhappy in my dream, I was angry that I'd wasted my life because I wasn't happy doing the work... I kept saying "I wish I never changed my plan."
I take that as meaning I wish I hadn't changed plans from my original - to study journalism. But the thing is... All day today my mind's been occupied with this. I simply cannot make up my mind on what I should do. And this dream has cause that questioning. I simply have no idea what to do and where to go from here.
Don't, I repeat don't take journalism as a major. I did, and I use it daily... not really.
Look I had the same idea you probably do, writing for some newspaper or being a novelist, but the fact is the former is very hard to come by that pays decently and the latter can be done by a monkey with a typewriter these days. Really the only thing out there for journalism majors is an endless parade of shit PR jobs.

I'm not saying don't indulge your passion, and if you feel that strongly about it then run at it full-force and don't let anybody stop you, including me. Just be prepared for a lot of hardship if it's not what you want to do, 110%
See, thats actually why I changed in the first place. I was told, by a teacher, not to bother getting a degree in journalism because I'd struggle to get a job as a journalist. The way she put it scared me, so I chose not to do it. But now I feel like changing my mind was a mistake... And, to be quite honest, I'm just really confused and can't make up my mind.

And how close are you to college or how far along into it are you?
I wanted to do journalism because it combines two things I love... Writing, and the news. Moreover I want to write stories that bring thoughts, ideas, and events to a large audience that would otherwise go unknown. I want to tell things, as they are, to tell the truth so that way others can be informed in a world where many people are lied to. I want to educate people and produce passion in people, all while going places to be inspired myself. Thats why I chose Journalism until I was, quite frankly, scared away from the concept.

I'm out of high school, but not in college. I am working at the moment in between the two.

I get what you're saying. I have to be prepared to work hard to get anywhere with it.

Its being able to take something, be it an event or idea, and creating a story from it (a truthful one, mind you) - so others can learn about it, and possibly be inspired from it.

So that reads like something an opinion columnist or a novelist would do more than anything else.

What particular field interests you in regards to journalism in conjunction with that idea?

What part of the "news" interests you, is it bringing the raw facts to the masses? Is it the crafting of a story from raw information that may or may not be totally accurate?
I get what you're saying. I have to be prepared to work hard to get anywhere with it.

Its being able to take something, be it an event or idea, and creating a story from it (a truthful one, mind you) - so others can learn about it, and possibly be inspired from it.

Not just that you have to work hard to get anywhere with it, that even if you work hard at it, you still might not get anywhere with it...

I've had basically the same discussion with NDom before... :)
