Extreme leftism radicalizes people as well as extreme rightism, and that the best way to mediate these extreme sis compromising in the middle. The calm and neutral middle rarely leads to violence.

You could start off with the criminal things religious texts say is law, then move on to what people have done on behalf of the institution or religion as a whole.

Not so. What an individual does as a result of believing to be acting on behalf of Holy Mother Church is not the fault of Holy Mother Church but of the individual in question. Of course, there are many more circumstances that come into play.
