I have also been doing some interesting reading the last few minutes. It does seem that in theory we could pass a law that ignores the relevant clause and there would be nothing that could be done about it by the UN. Maybe we should look into closing this loophole by making the treaty national law as part of the Constitution not just an international treaty?
