Maryginia's campaign is going down too, he just said he doesn't want public education. He wants us to start with vouchers, but then gradually get rid of those too. His final educational system would be completely private.

Free schools could be the way forward for the state funded sector but whilst I am a champion of the British Private system comments like those made by Maryginia really do make me despair.

If you read the actual bill you will find that is not what it does, It merely indicates our official support for the deceleration. Thus it is not legally binding to us the nations lawmakers.

CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD

Article 28

States Parties recognize the right of the child to education, and with a view to achieving this right progressively and on the basis of equal opportunity, they shall, in particular:
Make primary education compulsory and available free to all;
Encourage the development of different forms of secondary education, including general and vocational education, make them available and accessible to every child, and take appropriate measures such as the introduction of free education and offering financial assistance in case of need;
Make higher education accessible to all on the basis of capacity by every appropriate means;
Make educational and vocational information and guidance available and accessible to all children;
Take measures to encourage regular attendance at schools and the reduction of drop-out rates.

Again, I commend your position but quoting parts of the declaration does not make the bill suddenly legally binding.

We ratified the UNCRC.

We passed that bill in a section that stated we as a country support the declaration of human rights. That is not the same as passing a bill making the declaration legally binding for the legislature.

It's does not stop the creation of a private only system after then.

I have also been doing some interesting reading the last few minutes. It does seem that in theory we could pass a law that ignores the relevant clause and there would be nothing that could be done about it by the UN. Maybe we should look into closing this loophole by making the treaty national law as part of the Constitution not just an international treaty?
