I just love the aesthetic of old-school vampire fiction, folkloric monsters, and the massive capacity for metaphor inherent in vampires.
That, and I'm a sucker for Universal-style horror, so Dracula, Frankenstein and the Wolf Man are my darlings.

Oh yes. It was a character to suffer with. It's amazing how even in the campy monster mash films, his performance rippled with emotion and made me take him seriously.
Yes, even in the Abbott & Costello film. I think he was that good.
I hope it's over too.Camelza wrote:Erinkita wrote:It's by George R. R. Martin. The man can write.
Personally I'm not that into vampires. I like books like Fevre Dream and Dracula because they're good books.
But the vampire thing... it's because they're sexy. Always have been. Dracula was written as a metaphor for Victorian peoples' fear of sex. As sex stopped being taboo, vampires stopped being scary. Simple as that.
And they started being misunderstood casanovas. I can live with that, actually, I like vampires too lately ...though not in a sexy way, maybe.

Oh, I know that. But the 1931 film and its sequels were horror. Horror that totally diverged from the point of the original story, but... horror.Camelza wrote:My factbook here in NS is full of them, but being the pretendious bastard I am ...I just call them "Lilith".
Eh. I might pick it up again. It did have spiders, after all, and spiders are awesome.

Maybe give Carmilla a read. Interesting book. It actually predates Dracula by 25 years. Probably the first lesbian vampire in fiction. It might just turn that maybe into a yes.

I find discussions about socialism quite boring myself, due to being NSG's main political discussions.
