Fascist Italy was actually doing ok, not great, but ok before its ill fated decision to follow Nazi Germany into WW2. It wasn't autarchic but it could at least stand on its own. The thing is Italy wasn't militarily fit for a war on that scale, hence why it later became so dependent on Germany later.
