I find it amazing how similar Slavic languages are to each other. I never learned Bulgarian or learned it, and yet I understood everything.

Do you English people have it the same when you, for example, read French or German?

If you know about historical liguistics we can point out cognates, but the average English speak is too stupid.

It seem we can't understand eachother, my Latin sucks. I only know a lot of Latin roots, I'm terrible with the verb congujations.

Reading? No, listen with Germanic languages? Dutch and Icelandic I can get a bit out of (dutch I can sort of understand everything) But no, not really

I can't understand spoke Dutch for beans, German is easier for me (German is of course my family's ancestral language, so I have a bias for it). Written Dutch is much better for me.

Indeed it is. I'm working on something myself, but I'm still working on the concept.

Part of it I intend to take place in a city like Venice, only built near the edge of a waterfall and powered by some sort of steampunk-ish hydroelectric contraption.

Icelandic is gibberish to me, I can't understand it. I is a nice lang though. The only Scandinavian lang I'm familiar with is Danish, I've gotten to the point I can listen to it and hear cognates.
